Dr. A.A. Jayashree Prabhakar has been working as the Head of English Department at Vels Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She has done Bachelor of Education, Master of Arts, Masters of Philosophy and PhD as part of her academics. She has an amazing 25 years of Teaching Experience and 8 years of Research Experience. She has also produced 18 M.Phil Scholars, 1 PhD Scholar and 6 students are working under her guidance and are yet to be awarded a Doctorate.

Which latest program are you offering in your Department to help students stand apart from the crowd?

"We are offering BA at UG level, MA, MPhil at PG level and PhD at Doctorate level"

Our Vels University has nearly 16 schools and our English Department comes under the School of Languages. We educate students on languages like English, Tamil, Hindi and French. And our Department offers BA and MA Degree course English Literature along with M.Phil and PhD program in English.

What factors make the programs of your college a best fit for students?

"It's fee structure and numerous learning scopes makes them a best fit for students"

The English Literature program of B.A and M.A is open for all who have done three or four papers in English. And fee structure of these courses is easily affordable by everyone. Along with this, the abundant learning opportunities and job opportunities associated with these courses makes them unique and simultaneously a best fit for students as in the upcoming time, English language will play a vital role in global communication and information technology.

What would you say are the best practices of your institute courses?

"Our teaching pedagogies, events like conferences and work opportunities makes these courses unique"

We offer a detailed study in Language History and Literature to students and our major emphasis remains on enhancing their oratorical skills. In addition to this, we keep organizing National and International level Seminars and Conferences and encourage our students to participate in the same. Also, the Literary and Theatrical club activities, Extension activities and educational visits are there to make students future ready.

What are some valuable insights of the programs that your department is offering to students?

"We provide suitable platforms to them to speak and present their ideas"

The main objective of our department is to develop Entrepreneurship skills, Language and Literary skills, Persuasive and Presentation skills in students. Hence we regularly organize such activities and events which gives them a suitable educational and business platforms to speak out and share their ideas. And due to these reason, I firmly believe that our Department courses are worth pursuing for students.

How do the programs of your college ensure the future preparedness of students?

"By conducting different kinds of learning events and enhacing their industrial exposure"

The curriculum of our college provides finest quality Literary knowledge to students as it is prepared after rigorous analysis and consideration with Academicians and industry experts. In addition to this, we regularly organize different kinds of events and activities with the support of our college clubs to give a real time experience and exposure to students, to bring out their hidden talents and inculcate best survival skills in them.

How did you train your faculty to deliver the programs to students in the best possible way?

"They stay updated with latest industry developments and use Mentee-Mentor system to teach students"

The faculty members of our college are highly qualified and experienced and stay updated about the latest happenings of the outside world. Also, before taking lectures they prepare a thorough lesson plan for their respective subjects and deliver it accordingly. We have also established a Mentor-Mentee system to address students academic and non-academic issues and queries on an individual basis. And remedial classes are arranged by them to cover the pending portions and to help the slow-learners. 

How do you establish a connection between your institute courses and industry requirements?

"We have value based courses, dedicated training programs and appprenticship to bridge the gaps"

Our college is offering Value Added Courses and customized training programs in the discipline of Content Writing, Scriptwriting, Subtitling, Editing, Screenplay Writing, Media communication and Designing and Freelancing. And internships have been made mandatory for every course which we offer to our students. Also, we provide Skill Enhancement courses to our students which train them as per corporate demands and educational and industry visits are organized by us as and when required to educate students about the industrial developments, demands and trends. Lastly, we offer training to them to learn foreign languages so that they can easily find the job of Translators in MNCs.

What challenges have you faced while inculcating the new programs in your curriculum?

"Communication gap between us and rural students is a big issue for us"

As far as challenges are concerned, there is only one major roadblock in front of us currently. Because we do have a diverse range of students in our institute who belong from different educational backgrounds, sometimes students coming from rural areas struggle to understand the language in which we deliver our courses. And to fix this issue, we try to teach them using bilingual methods and gradually motivate them to learn languages and develop fluency by taking part in our training programs. Apart from this, we also organize various cultural and oratorical activities and involve them on a group and individual basis to help them overcome the language difficulties.

On what kinds of projects your students are currently working on under the courses they are pursuing?

"Some of them are working on Literacy projects while others are doing research on different topics"

Our students are working on different kinds of real time projects under the courses which they are pursuing from our college. For instance, the final year students of UG and PG Degree courses are working on Literary Projects while the M.Phil and PhD students are working on their research projects.
