Mr. D.Rohan Kumar is the Assistant Professor & HOD for the 5 year integrated program, School of Law in Vels Institute of Science Technology and Advanced Studies, Chennai. He has completed a Master of Arts, Master of Philosophy and is pursuing Ph.D currently. He has an experience of 10 years as Assistant Professor. Also, he has worked as an Academic Coordinator in Saveetha School of Law and Hod in School of Law,Vels University from 202O onwards. BA LLB( Hons), BBALLB (Hons.) and B. COM (Hons) programs are offered in Vels School of Law. It is well oriented to provide much needed skills of lawyering as per the demand of the Bar, the Bench & the Industry. Our programs offered in the School of Law, VISTAS are designed in such a manner to develop essential lawyering skills in Litigation, Arbitration, Mediation , Negotiation ,counseling clients, examination of witness and research skills.

Students are given overall training in various skills that require them to outperform in the industry. Most of our program is designed to ensure that necessary skills are imparted. It is coupled with discipline and punctuality that are most essential for lawyers.

We focus on practical oriented courses and give emphasis in activity-based teaching-learning. Our campus practices hands-on skill training from the first year. These methods are really helping the students and overcoming their hurdles.

How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?
“Client counseling, witness examinations and moot court are given to pupils”
Focus is given to enable students to have active learning by allocating separate hours for the library which is one of the biggest in the city. Moot Court is an essential component for all students for first year to final year. Apart from Moot Court, Client Counseling, Trial advocacy, and witness examinations, etc are given importance.
How did you train faculty to deliver the program to the students?
“FDPs, several sessions related to industry and courses are given to faculties”
Regular faculty development programmes are conducted for faculty members on varied topics of teaching-learning. Faculty members are monitored to do courses on Swayam, NPTEL, Coursera etc. Their class requirements are being monitored regularly and feedback obtained from the students. All these are used to improve teachers ‘s class delivery
How do you tend to build an industry connected with this program?
“Organize seminars, workshops and expert talks in the campus for students benefits”
We regularly conduct seminars, workshops for students and teachers to connect with the Bar and the industry requirements. Talks by experts from the Bar, the Bench and the industry are regularly conducted. This helps us to access the demands and needs of the Bar and the industry.
What were the challenges that you faced while inculcating this program in your curriculum?
“Implementation of curriculum as per industrial standards are the greatest challenge faced by us”
One of the major challenges is to train the teachers in the new pedagogical approach. We follow Outcome Based Education. Students also felt different when implementing the curriculum. It was different for the industry to understand the concept.
What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program?
“Legal aid and legal awareness projects are worked by pupils nowadays”
Majority, students work on legal aid and legal awareness on varied topics. These are necessary for students of schools and common citizens to understand.
