Ms. Prerna Dhyani is working as an Assistant Professor of the Forestry and Fisheries Department at Himgiri Zee University. She has done M.Sc. in Zoology with a specialization in Fisheries Science. What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students as a faculty?

“To provide them best education and opportunities to grow”

My basic accountability towards my students is to impart the best education to them for their overall growth and development, ensuring that students understand the concepts clearly and fully.

How do you establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

“By ensuring an open environment to communicate and solve queries”

To maintain cordial relations with my colleagues I always ensure a helping hand whenever they are in need and try to solve their issues then and there. During classroom teaching I ask the students and colleagues about their well-being to not only ensure professional touch but also personal empathy. I always try to reach out to the students to understand their problems by ensuring an open environment to communicate, be it in the classroom or outside.

How do you introduce a practical and industry-oriented approach towards subjects?

“We do conduct professional visits and experiments to make it that way”

To offer a practical and industry-oriented approach towards subjects we do perform a lot of practical related to every topic with the students to make them understand the concept properly. We also organize industry visits for our students to get a general idea about industry expectations from our students in future.

Which best practices are offered by the department to the students to help them gain necessary skills?

“We offer a wide variety of professional and field visits”

We do provide a lot of offerings to our students and below are the main ones in this regard.

  1. Industry visits
  2. Education tours
  3. Field visits
  4. Fieldwork (pond maintenance for fisheries students including the netting of fish, their feeding and other necessary works)

How do you strategize and update the curriculum to make it befitting for the students?

“We always prepare and update it with latest industry needs”

For each course, the curriculum is divided into semesters under which different subjects are taught. The subject division is such that basic concepts are usually taught in the first and second years, in the third year applied subjects are taught. During the fourth year, students undergo various training programs and do project work where their knowledge is tested. The syllabus gets updated in accordance with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

How does your department prepare students for Higher education?

“We do provide the best guidance to them regarding higher education”

Our students are given information from time to time about information related to various options of either going for masters and then-doctoral programs as well as civil services exams. They are given knowledge about the various scholarship schemes as well for supporting their higher studies.

How do you help your student to cope up with this competitive world?

“By encouraging them to keep themselves updated about changing world and industry needs”

The students are advised on current research topics and current affairs of the world. They are encouraged to have a holistic approach so that the pressure of the competing world does not get to them. We encourage and motivate our students to not only focus on the academic curriculum but also be involved in extracurricular activities.

What extracurricular activities are organized in college to enhance the skills of the students?

“We arrange various types of activities and training for them”

Our college does organize a lot of co-curricular activities and some of them are as follows.

  1. Physical education and swimming classes which are part of their course curriculum.
  2. We encourage them to take short-term programming language courses.

When you joined this college, what was your vision and how are you trying to achieve that?

“To provide the best education to students and sharpen my own knowledge throughout”

When I first joined the university, I wanted to increase my research skills and teaching abilities so that I could impart better education to the students. I always try to learn new skills, attend the FDPs for the same and try to evolve new ways to impart the knowledge and at the same time focus on the research goals.

What are the approaches you bring in apart from curriculum to teach the students?

“By maintaining an ask questions approach during classes”

I always try to ensure that my students are not only rotting theory but also learning something new and informative in every class and for that I do follow few practices such as:

  1. Relating the textbook facts with practical examples.
  2. Encouraging the students to have a practical approach.
  3. Ask the students to maintain their curiosity.

“Always keep an affirmative approach toward your career as well as life”

I would recommend to students to always have a positive attitude towards life. One should learn from their failures and keep on trying till they succeed. Read books, they are immense sources of knowledge. Everyone should perform the art of introspection; it really helps one overcome their shortcomings.
