Dr. Mathew T.J. is the Principal of PHCET Rasayani and brings a wealth of experience from the various leadership positions he has had in academic, research and managerial domains for nearly thirty years. What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“To enlighten young minds keeps me connected to the education sector”

It is one of the most significant opportunities to serve society. One is exposed to new ideas and has the facility to explore various avenues and remain young being with the young always. A true academic does not understand ‘boredom’.


What is your philosophy of leadership? 

“I value the feedback from my team and move forward with the collective decision”

Essentially, I am a team player and love to play basketball while I am also a half marathoner. These two facets of my personality give an idea about my leadership style. I value the input and feedback from my colleagues, students, superiors and also other stakeholders.


How does your curriculum ensure the best practice of industry?

“We inculcate several innovative practices to prepare students for the industry”

PHCET, being an affiliated college of Mumbai University, has to follow the curriculum prescribed by the MU. However, several innovative practices such as Project-Based Learning provide industry mentors for every student, measuring the value addition to our quality learning. Other than academics happening to the student during each semester, etc., are introduced to ensure that the students get the industry's best benefits.

What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the college and the students are?

“There are multiple roles that I have to fill”

A Principal has three roles; academic, leadership, and managerial. Academic: should feel what is happening globally and the capability to adapt many of the global happenings to local needs as much as possible. Leadership: should have the ability to see what others may not see and can translate that into reality with conviction, confidence and in a conciliatory manner helping everybody to buy-in. Managerial: should have various interests; the capability to negotiate; mentally ordered and the ability to anticipate. A right mix of the above three traits would enable one to fulfil one's responsibilities reasonably effectively to the college and students.


What do you think should be your priority over the next 10 years?

“We want to become an institution of prime excellence”

PHCET aspires to be one of the very best academic and technical education institutions known for and a pointer for excellence. The realization of it would be to become an autonomous college and a Deemed to be University.
