Mrs. V. Usha is working as an Assistant Professor cum HOD in the Department of Commerce at Shri Sakthikailassh Women's College, Salem. She completed B.com degree from AVS College of Arts and science in 2005. Later, she did M.com degree from Periyar University in 2009 and completed an M.Phil from Salem Sowdeswari College in 2010. She is pursuing PhD in AVS College of Arts and science. She has 11 years of experience in teaching and published various research papers.

Being a faculty of the Shri Sakthikailassh Women's College, Salem, what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

“To provide teaching methods, lesson plans, leadership opportunities and task settings are my primary duties on campus”

I have an idea about the nature of our students and a desire to share the love for the subject with students. A commitment to encouraging independence, and engaging with students at their level of understanding. My duty is to provide teaching methods and academic tasks that require students to learn actively, responsibly and co-operatively. It helps them to acquire knowledge on the curriculum. To gain a scientific attitude, we demonstrate empathy, affection and patience to students. We prepare lesson plans regularly on campus. 

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with students and fellow faculty?

“Organize extracurricular events, play curriculum related games and student talks on campus”

 First impressions are the best impression to know our students first. We talk to students regularly and explicitly value the student over the content. Our campus organize curriculum related games, activities and assume the best in every student. We motivate students for extracurricular events.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry oriented?

“Provide leadership opportunities, clarify the concept, research solution and synthesis results available on campus”

First vision and mission of every one subject is explained to the students. We clarify every one concept and give leadership opportunities. Faculties analyze the problem and identify possible explanations or solutions. Set task, research solution and synthesis results or solutions.

What are the best practices offered by Shri Sakthikailassh Women's College, Salem to students which help them gain necessary skills?

“Several skills such as communication, leadership, creativity, self confidence, critical thinking and time management skills are developed among students”

Students can attain various skills such as Communication, public speaking, Time management, Leadership and Teamwork. They can develop Creativity, Critical Thinking, Flexibility and Computer applications. So, students can attain the Self confidence skills from campus itself. 

How do you strategize the curriculum and how often gets updated to make it befitting for the students?

How do you help your student to cope up with the competition being so high in the outside world?

“Teach tolerance, learn beyond the classroom, and achieve a skill set for students”

We teach Collaboration as a value and skill set for students and teach tolerance. Our faculties help students to learn through their strengths. We use learning beyond the classroom and positive Competition among students. 

Do you have any extracurricular activities to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?

“Sports teams, social clubs, and subject-based groups are provided to students to expose real world challenges”

Extra-curricular activities help students to learn about themselves and use their skills or knowledge in different contexts. We choose a career path with our digital magazine for students and graduates. Sports teams, subject-based groups and social clubs are organized around a shared interest. Other options included in our curriculum are becoming a course ambassador, and volunteering as a representative for your hall of residence. We are contributing to the student radio or newspaper.

What are the challenges you faced to uplift the quality of education of your department?

“To navigate information systems, collaboration across departments, career plans and supportive services staff are great challenges for us”

We help students to create clear educational and career plans. Our campus fosters stronger connections between students, faculty, and staff. Creating more opportunities for student leadership development and navigating information systems are great challenges. Other ones include increasing collaboration across departments, facilitating better handoffs between admissions counselors, advisors, success coaches, and other supportive services staff. 

When you came to college, what was your vision and how are you trying to achieve the same?

“To focus on student success and excellence in career plans”

Our vision is student success and completion in the society. We provide excellence in career plans, collaboration and diversity. Life-Long Learning, integrity and technological advancement are given to students. 

How does the curriculum of college ensure the best practice of the industry? 

“Organize seminars, conferences, research publications, soft skill training and peer enablement programs are given to students”

We contact peer enablement programmes and workshops for students. Our campus organizes seminars and conferences. Increase research paper publication and funded programmes to motivate writing journals and magazines. We are arranging soft skill training for the faculty.

How does the college enhance the skills of the faculty and prepares them according to the industry standards?

“Conduct national level seminars, teaching learning programs and learning resources as per industry standards for students”

 IIT Bombay conducts faculty development in teaching learning process. Use of learning resources, multimedia and internet resources for teaching are available on campus. Students give feedback about teachers performance and fixing suggestion boxes near the principal room. Our campus provides project laboratories in each department and conducts national level seminars, conferences or workshops. Students get appraisal of teachers' performance along with Wi Fi campus. 

What are the interventions and approaches you bring in apart from curriculum to train the students?

“Online tutorials, feedback, friendly management and monitoring progress to train students”

We give plenty of feedback and continually monitor the progress of pupils. Clarity your objectives, active learning and online tutorials are given to students. They get friendly management on campus.
