Dr. Sajay T. Purkar is the Director of Shivajirao Kadam Institute of Technology and Management. He completed his engineering in the domain of Production Engineering and holds a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering. He has held notable positions of Lecturer and H.O.D in different colleges prior to being the Director of SKITM. In this interview he talks about the continuous changes that the technology has to offer and how pivotal it is to keep learning through the changes.  He then highlights upon his leadership style and what future plans he has for the institution and the students. Putting in the frame, he moves on to the learning environment the institute has to offer and how they create a collaborative environment for the students to work and prosper together. In the later segment he emphasises on why it is important to have practical knowledge along with theoretical knowledge, and how it is helping the institute to create world class quality professionals. At the end, he advises students to encash the opportunities the technology has to offer and make a budding career out of it.

Continuous changes and updations in the technology and methodologies keeps me connected to the educational domain

Perhaps the best profession in the world is teaching. There are several factors that keep me connected with the educational sector. Updating me with the new technologies and new teaching methodologies are key aspects to keep me connected in this domain. It keeps me vibrant and I always get the opportunity to educate myself.

In fact whenever I step into the institute, I feel fresh and never become exhausted after the day’s work. I always want to stay connected with the students so that no negative thoughts can overpower me.

A leader should have entrepreneurial vision and think about the growth of the institution

To lead and not to manage: This idea differentiates SKITM from other institutions. A leader should have an entrepreneurial vision and should think about the forces that will affect the growth of the institution. To handle situations in a matured way so that neither I get frustrated due to failures and nor overjoyed with success.

The plan is to deliver quality education to develop skills, innovativeness and research ideas

Our plan is to deliver quality education to develop the skill, innovativeness and research ideas. For the same, we are in the process of creating mobile strategy, to implement segmented email marketing. Along with this we need to promote through social media, social activities and newspaper advertisement.

Amidst the greenery in the western part of Indore, SKITM (regulated by AICTE & UGC) is an epitome of the centre of learning where we give special attention to the personality development of each and every student.

The Campus of SKITM has a vibrant campus culture with cafeteria, library, Laboratory, computer labs, provision for both indoor and outdoor games, and separate workshop area for engineering students. Being the Director of SKITM, I have to look into the total administration process, to ensure quality education. Also, I have to monitor the overall performance of the students and plan the academic activities.

The first challenge is ‘Teaching quality’. Most of the institutions in India are facing decline in teaching quality. Here, at SKITM, we have a group of qualified and experienced teaching professionals who not only hold the task of imparting education but also try to motivate the students to reach their goals.

The second one is “Quota System’. To be honest, the quota is not at all good for the quality of higher education. Talent and merit is more important than one’s identity. The third one is ‘Moral issues’. Younger generation is not at all interested in serving their country. They are only interested in taking a job with a hefty pay package. In fact, we need to focus on project based learning because just theory is not enough.

Now-a-days, students want to get selected in service industries from campus interviews. Higher education does not solve the problem when it comes to manufacturing industries. This is one of the major problems.

Technology is making advancement and creating opportunities day by day, students should know how to make effective use of technology

Students are exposed to much higher technology and the exposure is increasing day by day. Although there are many benefits of the same but it does come with a lot of demerits. This hampers their performance overall. Thus, it is required for them to know how to make effective use of technology. Also, they easily lose focus, thus they should be attentive during the classes. Also, negativity is propagating like a wildfire, they should train their minds to be positive in every situation. They should respect their professors and the ones who are working as a team. Additionally, they should never stop learning as ‘Learning is an unending process’
