Shillong College, Principal: Dr. (Mrs.) E. Kharkongor Interview

Dr. (Mrs) E. Kharkongor is currently serving as the Principal at Shillong College, Shillong. She has several years of teaching experience as an Associate Professor of Economics and is involved in a number of activities for enhancing academic and professional excellence. She has presented and published a number of papers in national and international publications related to Economic Development, Environment and Sustainable Development, Agriculture and Industry, Public Finance, Entrepreneurship, Higher Education, Women Studies, and others. She has written textbooks, co-authored a number of ISBN publications and an ISSN Journal. She is a member of a number of academic and professional bodies and is also a community facilitator and master trainer in Entrepreneurship.

What keeps you connected to the education sector?

“Teaching and learning are integral”

Teaching has always been my passion. I think learning never stops and I have learnt so much by teaching others. Now, as an administrator, I am exposed to a wider array of responsibilities but my core principles and attachment to my profession have always kept me connected to this sector. 

How are you coping with the current situation of COVID19 Pandemic?

“Addressing the problem with digital means”

We have made every effort to adequately respond to the situation by completely moving to the virtual platform. We have effectively started our classes online. Of course, moving online has not been without difficulties. These difficulties include the problem of connectivity during classroom sessions, faculties having to adapt and learn how to conduct online sessions and maintain the same discipline in the classroom, provisions of up-to-date ICT infrastructure amongst others. Despite these difficulties, we have made much improvements in ICT supports and training which have equipped our faculties so that there is no lag in students' education schedules.

What changes are you bringing or planning to bring to the college?

“Enhancing amenities for a holistic growth of students”

We are always in the process of incorporating the best facilities for our students and faculty so that they can learn and grow in a dynamic environment. With funds received from UGC, RUSA and our own resources, the college has been able to continuously develop its infrastructure for academics, enhancing ICT, sports and other related facilities. Amongst a few, we have a well-equipped language laboratory, an Art & Culture Museum, swimming pool among others. My belief is that we need to nurture every quality and talent of our students so that they can excel in diverse fields whether academics, co-curricular as well as extracurricular activities.

What can an inbound student gain from studying here?

From a humble beginning in 1956, Shillong college has been awarded Grade A by NAAC and is one of the premier co-educational institutions of the state of Meghalaya. Our college focuses not only on academic excellence but every student is encouraged to explore his or her unique potential and follow the chosen area of interest whether in co-curricular or extra-curricular activities. For example, we have excelled in sports activities and the college has numerous sports personalities in various fields including ISL players too. Moreover, we provide ample opportunities for skill development and imparting entrepreneurship training through an active Entrepreneurship Development Cell. With well-trained faculty, supportive staff, improved and constantly evolving infrastructure we focus on a balanced environment for the all-round growth of the student.

What advice do you have for students during these pandemic times?

“Do not stop learning”

In a way, I feel that the pandemic with its online classrooms and examinations have made students complacent and lazy. However, the pandemic should not be an excuse for progress and learning. So, students must be vigilant and not give up on learning. They should take advantage of opportunities and develop their capabilities.

How do you bring in a practical approach towards subjects?

“A healthy integration with experts and training”

We organize regular meetings and interactions with experts and industry specialists to give advice for improvements in our curriculum. Moreover, we conduct workshops, seminars, conferences, training programmes etc. to help students gain exposure to the practical world and retain that knowledge for their livelihood, career and future life. We encouraged teacher-student projects through the Research Publication and Innovation Cell and a number of these projects have been published in peer-reviewed journals. Also, we have strong ties with the community through our participation programmes by the NSS, NCC, departments and others. All these have enhanced the practical approach towards subjects.
