Dr. Shweta Soni is a Professor, Department of Periodontics at Vyas Dental College and Hospital, Jodhpur. She has done her B.D.S. and M.D.S in Periodontics from Rajasthan University. The Department of Periodontics has separate working clinics for the postgraduate and the undergraduate students. The department is well equipped with instruments and materials for carrying out all the procedures in an undisturbed manner. It has a spacious seminar room consisting of the latest audio-visual aids making it more interesting for the post-graduate students in presenting their weekly seminars, journal clubs, case presentations, etc. It has a very good patient inflow, training the students with the best guidance aiming at producing a graduate competent in clinical work with sound theoretical knowledge.

What are your roles and responsibilities to the college and the students?

“Keep staff and students motivated”

For my students, I need to ensure that the college shapes them into the best version of themselves. I make sure that there are ample opportunities for them to learn – from their teachers, from industrialists, from the community, and from each other. For our college, my focus is on achieving short-term goals and tying them into our larger vision to make and maintain VDCH as a Center of Excellence in the field of Periodontics. It’s important that I keep the staff and students motivated towards this goal as well. 

How do you strategize about the key programs and plans for your department?

“Our college helps students to focus both on practical and theoretical knowledge”

The students are continuously encouraged to bring out the best in them by attending scientific workshops, conventions, conferences, hands-on courses and by making them present scientific papers and posters. The postgraduate students update their knowledge by presenting their weekly seminars, journal clubs, case presentations, etc. with library dissertation and thesis work department helping students to build sound theoretical knowledge as well as orient them for research work.

Tell us about your best experiences in the field of Periodontics?

“Having sound Medical knowledge and practice change constantly”

I have been engaged in providing professional periodontics services for the last 12 to 13 years. Dr. Chitra Agrawal is one more professor in the department having professional experience since the last 12 to 13 years. I have designed myself to provide accurate, authoritative information about the subject matter and make every effort to update myself with the most current information available on procedures.

How is periodontics different from the other dentistry courses?

“The long term preservation of dentition is closely associated with the branch of Periodontics”

Our periodontics branch aims to restore the oral tissues in health and prevents the progression of various periodontal/ dental diseases to prevent permanent loss of dentition. Transfer of the patient from active treatment status to a maintenance program is a definitive step in total patient care that requires time and effort and “ This is the key foundation of periodontics”

Do you have any extracurricular activities to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?

The Department conducted several research works in collaboration with medical colleges and conducted short studies in prestigious medical institute AIIMS. Department encourages students to participate in the various dental camp program which is organized by the public health department to enhance the skills of the students and expose them to real-world challenges
