Many students, particularly in PGDIE and PGDMM, left/left the college after being placed in PSU in the first year. Even in the PGDIM, many students leave/leave for higher-ranked colleges if they are on a waiting list. Since its inception, it has been 100% successful in terms of placement.
During a normal placement season, there are about 4 to 5 days in which major companies hire for summer placements. The top companies will come within the first two days. You can think of applying then right away so you have higher chances of getting converted and landing a job.

One of my cousins was a part of NITIE Mumbai and has a better outlook regarding the same. Here is what he has to say,
These are what you should know before finally deciding anything.
To secure admission to top MBA institutes in India, you should aim for CAT percentiles from 85 onwards. Here's the order of the institutes you should target in descending order - IIM K with 97+ percentile, MDI with 96+, IMT Ghaziabad with 90+, SPJain with 85+, and NITIE with as high as possible sectional-wise.
Even though SPJain is a premier institute, it gives a call from the 85 percentile onward, since they focus on overall values that an individual possesses and want students with more values in them. They have 2 group interviews, so they follow a rejection procedure.
NITIE has a sectional cutoff, so it's advisable to have as high as possible sectional-wise, as many people with an overall CAT percentile in the range of 97-98 were not selected in either of their 2 programs(PGDM and PGDIESM) in 2016.
IIM K also has a sectional cutoff of 90+, so it's important to score well in each section.
It's worth noting that these institutes do not have a sectional cutoff, but it's always advisable to have a 90+ sectional percentile to be on the safer side. Aim for high percentile and sectional scores to improve your chances of securing a seat in these prestigious institutes.
Coming from a mechanical background, I can assure you that you will find a lot of opportunities in your desired field of interest. Your chances of getting placed with a manufacturing firm or an FMCG are higher.
If you get placed in a manufacturing firm or an FMCG or any e-commerce company, you will get jobs offering planning roles.
NITIE attracts a lot of consulting and manufacturing firms. To be honest, the only college where you will find manufacturing firms offering SCM roles is NITIE. In addition to that, NITIE is the best in providing roles related to demand planning, forecasting, and similar job profiles in an FMCG firm.
It is subjective and it completely depends on your goals and your preferences, and how much the IIM tag matters to you. If you are really keen and want to have a career in operations and especially supply chain management then you can/should go for NITIE.
For all other streams go for IIM-I without any second thought. The placement is good there even with the big batch size and all, and why consider yourself at the bottom of the batch before even entering the institution? Even if you are able to keep yourself in the top 50 percent you will get a good and lucrative job and package.
Below is a table comparing the two on the basis of fees, and packages;

The first part of your question cannot necessarily be broken down. But, it can rather be said that you should prepare enough to secure a reasonable score in GATE to be shortlisted.
However, it is essential that you put valid points when participating in one. Because this will determine whether or not you are the best fit among others.
NITIE has a total of 5 courses both for the students attempting for CAT and GATE. The courses for CAT students include PGDIM and PGDISEM whereas for the GATE students include PGDIE, PGDPM, PGDMM.
