Which is better, XLRI or IIMK?

RW
Ravish Wadwa Posted On : June 14th, 2021
Director at ReGraduate | MBA, FMS Delhi

It is a bit naïve to compare XLRI to IIMK. Among the two, XLRI is definitely a better choice, being one of the oldest Business Schools in the country.

The points below provide a brief overview of both the institutes and some valid highlights to support the choice.

  • XLRI is a lot more established institute than IIMK, with a lot of experience over time.
  • For most MBA aspirants, XLRI is the first choice among the two. It is a fact that XLRI is not very far in ranking and facilities from institutes like IIM A, B, C, ISB, FMS, etc.
  • Considering the placements in both institutes, XLRI offers an average salary of Rs. 20.1 LPA to students whereas, for IIM K, the average package is Rs. 17.8 LPA.
  • The roles offered in XLRI and the quality of recruiting companies visiting XLRI are better than those in IIM K.
  • The batch size of XLRI is 180 students, whereas the batch size of IIM K is 382 students. So, it is quite obvious that it has an impact on placement as a smaller batch has greater chances of getting placed than a larger batch.
  • XLRI is considered the best institute in India for doing an MBA in HR. So, students interested in HR can blindly opt for the institute.

Therefore, students having an XLRI interview conversion should definitely go for it, having got a chance in such an excellent institute.

In a XLRI HRM program interview, do they ask why you want to make a shift to HR after having 3+ years of work experience in the IT industry?

MS
Mansi Sheth Posted On : June 28th, 2021
Studied at Xavier School of Management

This is one of the common questions asked in an MBA interview. Generally the question “Why MBA?” encompasses all these. They may twist this question slightly according to your background.

These questions are frequently asked to gauge what is your thought process behind choosing an MBA. They want to know if you have given a deep thought about it and how you can convince the interviewer.

Secondly, they want to understand why you made this choice. The work you have done to date and the career trajectory you took, how it was good for you and how doing an MBA might be a good idea for your career progression. The more concrete and personal reasons you have, the more convincing it is both for you as well as for the panelists.

So, definitely pick some good reasons from your work experience and why it convinced you to pursue MBA in the HRM program. First, convince yourself and if you can, you can definitely convince the interviewers.

How difficult is it to crack the GDPI of XLRI if I score in the 99th percentile?

SA
Siddharth Agarwal Posted On : May 28th, 2021
MBA Human Resources, Xavier School of Management (2019)

Even if you have scored 99 percentile, it is not very easy to crack the GDPI of XLRI. Every person who clears the exam and makes it to GDPI will be just as driven as you are or even more. It is not easy because of this as a lot of people are competing for the same seat and are equally hungry for it.

Those students who score around 97 and 98 percentile come in for the GDPI round more prepared. This is because as a 99+ percentile scorer, you have this notion that it will be easier for you as compared to them.

The GD and PI evaluation is conducted to test the different abilities of the XAT exam. It can be said that there is an advantage for people who have higher percentiles, but it is also not enough to make it easy.

In the end, if you make it through the bloodbath which is an Indian B- School GD round, you truly deserve the success that it brings along irrespective of your percentile.

The faculty is world-class and you will get to learn a lot. The program works in partnership with SHRM so that you can also communicate directly with industry experts.

The program offers detailed modules on career and succession planning coaching and mentoring, etc. There will be many practical assignments involving various aspects of talent management in everyday life.

I have a friend who did this program and benefited from it. The addition of the XLRI name in your CV is definitely one of the advantages of this program. As helpful as this program is, it may not matter much in terms of your promotion or next job switch.

SCMHRD offers a good HR MBA program. It offers a decent curriculum and placements. SCMHRD placements in 2021 concluded with an average CTC of INR 16.5 LPA. The highest CTC offered was INR 33.6 LPA.

For HR, XLRI is better than SCMHRD. TISS is a great option for HR as well. In terms of placements, SCMHRD is comparable to TISS.

Are XLRI and ISB too particular about past academics, like the IIM's?

Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : September 27th, 2023

XLRI and ISB are concerned about your past academics but not like the IIM’s. In the IIM’s selection process past academic info’s like the results of X, XII and graduation do matters. The eligibility criteria of XLRI and ISB are as follows:

  • The major route for XLRI admission into the PGDM programmes is the XAT, which is followed by an individual interview. For the PGDM-GM programme, XLRI also accepts GMAT and GRE scores. 88 to 95 percentile is the XLRI XAT Cutoff.
  • But along with the XAT scores, Individuals possessing good academic background along with relevant work experience and extra-curricular activities stays in the upper hand.
  • Your former academic standing and how you did on the GMAT/GRE test help ISB (Indian School of Business) to determine how well you can handle the program's demands. Along with the total GMAT/GRE score, the institute also takes into account grades from the 12th grade, graduation grades, post-graduate grades, and certification scores, as appropriate.

While the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) do consider class 10th and 12th marks as part of their admission process, XLRI and ISB prioritize other factors like entrance test scores, work experience, and interviews. XLRI and ISB place less stringent emphasis on school-level marks, focusing more on holistic candidate evaluation in comparison to the IIM’s.

What is the lowest XAT percentile that a person has scored and still gotten a seat in XLRI?

IC
Indrani Chatterjee Posted On : September 28th, 2023
PGDM from Xavier School of Management (2018)

The XAT cutoff was just made public by XLRI. For both the general engineering and general non-engineering categories, the XLRI XAT Cutoff 2023 was 95% for male students and 92% for female students to get admitted to the XLRI BM course.

For admission to the XLRI HRM course, the XLRI XAT Cutoff 2023 was 93 percentiles for male general engineering students and 91 percentiles for female general engineering students.

The GMAT is also accepted by XLRI. The anticipated XLRI GMAT cutoff scores for HRM and BM are 710 and 730, respectively.

Since there are multiple profile types and programmes (BM and HRM) with varied cutoff scores, the XAT percentile serves as a bridge to the next step of the admissions process. All applicants who meet that cutoff point are therefore qualified to participate in the GD/PI phase, which follows. Therefore, the cutoff percentile, which often falls between 92 and 96%ile, is the so-called lowest percentile of final offer conversion.

How shall we prepare for essay writing and GK for XAT to get into XLRI? As this pattern was absent in CAT, how shall we cover these sessions in this short span?

AS
Abhijeet Sinha Posted On : September 6th, 2022

There are no fixed strategy to tackle the essay section of XAT. The essay topics are usually unpredictable. Usually, the topics are abstract in nature. It’s often observed that the topics are based on a common idiom or phrase with an implied philosophical hint. The aim of this section is to judge your language skill as well as your thought process. Practice writing sample essays on various topics and assess them on content and writing style. Reading the editorial section of national newspapers can be helpful for this section.

For the GK section, you should focus more on Economics and Business related topics. Prepare current affairs for the last 6 months. For Static GK read about awards, geography, books & authors, cabinet ministers, and government yojanas.

How is the BM course of XLRI Jamshedpur different from management courses present in any of the IIMs?

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : April 25th, 2023

I seriously doubt that you will have much success in locating a student who has taken both of those classes. It is more prudent to make an effort to get this question answered by members of the faculty that are shared by both institutions. There is a significant amount of faculty exchange between XLRI Jamshedpur and the other IIMs, most notably IIMCal.

XLRI Jamshedpur's BM program interested me. Academic standards are high, in my opinion. It had less access to the world in Jamshedpur. As a result, students participated in fewer international exchange programs, guest lectures, visiting faculty, hands-on chances, and genuine projects, all of which would have likely improved education.
