How's an MTech in industrial engineering from IIT Delhi?

KS
Kunal Sharma Posted On : April 5th, 2023
B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

IIT Delhi M.Tech program in Industrial Engineering covers a wide range of topics such as statistics, probability, optimization, simulation, etc thus attracting more and more recruiters every year.

Of all the fields, a major part of the batch prefers Analytics mainly because of the packages offered and the kind of companies visiting for jobs related to Analytics. Analytics companies arrive way before supply chains and other companies and most students prefer going for Analytics only.

However, the IE branch has much better scope in other Institutes like NITIE, IITB, and IITK. IIT Delhi also isn’t very lacking and its placement statistics are a testament to the same.

Around 80% of the entire batch was placed this year with the major recruiters include

  • Accenture
  • Barclays Bank
  • Capgemini
  • Deloitte
  • Flipkart
  • Hindustan Unilever
  • ICICI
  • JP Morgan Chase

Coursework: The coursework lacks diversity in comparison to the IEOR at Bombay or IEM at Kanpur. But the best part is the rigorous projects part of the curriculum that begins right from the first year itself. These projects are based on real-life problems in society covering fields such as healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, and public policy while using modern programming tools such as Python, Matlab, Java, C, etc.

Some major courses offered in the program are

  • Probability and statistics
  • Linear and Non-linear optimization
  • Industrial Engineering Systems
  • Supply Chain Management
  • MPC (Maintenance Planning and Control)
  • Project Management
  • OPC (operations Planning and Control)
  • SMS (Stochastic Modeling and Simulation)
  • Value Engineering and life cycle costing
  • RAM (Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability)

Considering decent placements and rigorous coursework, MTech in Industrial Engineering at IIT Delhi is not a bad idea.

How good is Pondicherry Engineering College for doing M.Tech in Computer science? How good are its placement stats for M.Tech?

AD
Abhishek Dasgupta Posted On : June 22nd, 2021
B.Tech, Mechanical Engineer from Pondicherry Engineering College

If you are considering Engineering colleges from Pondicherry alone then choosing PEC is the best choice. You will receive similar placement opportunities as that of the BTech students at the institute.

Companies like TCS, HCL, Aricent, Sapient, SAP, Subex, and few start-ups visit the campus for placement drives.

There is no difference in packages that are offered to BTech graduates and MTech graduates unless you negotiate on your behalf.

Another crucial thing for MTech at PEC is choosing the right project guide. Your project quality will depend a lot on the guide. It is of utmost importance for postgraduates. So, choose a difficult project and don’t entirely depend on your guide for the work. Do courses on online platforms like Coursera to learn about necessary things.

So, choose PEC, only if you are willing to go the extra mile by yourself.

What is better in IIIT Hyderabad, Mtech or MS?

AC
Anupama Chauhan Posted On : August 3rd, 2023
studied at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad

For placements, M.Tech is better than MS. This is because of the huge number of SDE jobs in India. To get good job offers, MS students must devote extra time to practice coding and problem solving.

In terms of exposure, MS is a better course. MS students at IIIT Hyderabad work with cutting-edge technologies and are in touch with the latest developments in their field. For this kind of exposure, M.Tech students need to devote extra time in doing relevant projects.

For Ph.D. aspirants, the research value at a global scale is more for the MS course. In this respect, M.Tech students can either convert to MS after a year or publish relevant research papers for paving their path into the area of research. The faculty is the same for both the courses at IIIT Hyderabad.

Thus, based on your preferences you can either choose M.Tech CSE or MS in CSE in IIIT Hyderabad. It is a renowned institution and will open numerous doors for you after your degree.

What is the placement scope for an ME in computer science and engineering at IISc Bangalore?

SP
Shikha Poddar Posted On : July 18th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc) (2016)

IISc Bangalore has an active placement cell that conducts placements yearly. Last year the students received an average salary of INR 23 LPA and the highest salary of INR 60 LPA. Some of the past recruiters include Adobe, India Bulls, Siemens, L&T, Tech Mahindra, ICICI bank, Cognizant, Birla Soft, Cipla, etc.

As for the ME, it's a research-oriented program and has no placements. So I am assuming the scope you are concerned about is the learning scope. The ME in CSE helps largely in expanding your knowledge base and considering it comes from one of the most prestigious institutes, the course is undoubtedly exceptional. However, it's best to check the faculty profile in your related areas.

What advice would you give to someone who would be joining Mtech CSE programme at IIT kanpur?

Gaurav Goplani Posted On : April 22nd, 2023

For any program, the most important part is what you are expecting from it after completing it. Here, your expectations after completing the MTech CSE program at IIT Kanpur will determine how you plan your Masters. For instance, do you want exposure in a particular field day mining or do you want exposure across various fields? Some might prefer to pursue a theoretical project for their major's thesis while some prefer working on a practical system. Fortunately, the curriculum at IIT Kanpur is very flexible and provides the right blend of both theoretical knowledge and research work.

Here are a few pieces of advice that will help you gain maximum advantage from the MTech in CSE at IIT Kanpur

  • Make sure you go for challenging courses only else, you will end up with a laid-back attitude
  • If you aren’t sure of your area of expertise, go for a course that is taught by the best professors.
  • During the literature survey part of your thesis work, participate with full focus even if your advisor isn’t very helpful.
  • Make sure your thesis is well-structured and not very long. Talk to your advisor about the same.
  • Work on your thesis from the start else you will regret it later. You need to live up to the standards of your advisor
  • Choose your advisor wisely based on your expectations from the thesis
  • Work on mini-side projects, and participate in hackathons which are a good learning experience.
  • Attend the seminars held by famous researchers to broaden your knowledge base
  • During placements don’t focus entirely on salary and make sure you get your dream job that also utilizes your skills well.
  • Explore your interests outside academics to ensure full exposure.

All these points will help you maximize productivity for your time spent as an MTech student at IIT Kanpur.

Average placements at IIIT Bangalore stands at around 24lpa, is it worth leaving top NITs for an Mtech CSE at IIIT Bangalore?

BG
Bidita Ghose Posted On : October 9th, 2023
Lives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

IIIT Bangalore is at par with top NITs at least in terms of placement scenario of its MTech CSE course. But the question is, are good placements enough to choose a college? Here are a few factors to consider while choosing between top NITs and IIIT Bangalore.

  • Faculty: IIIT Bangalore has a much more qualified and learned faculty pool than top NITs and offers core CSE education in India. Most professors are Ph.D. holders from foreign universities and are at par with the top 7 IITs.
  • Labs: IIIT Bangalore has much better labs and resources whereas NITs obsolete equipment and lab facilities.
  • Curriculum: IIIT Bangalore has a CS-tailored class which is updated frequently to meet industry trends while NITs don't.
  • Brand: IIIT Bangalore has a better brand name mainly because it is known for its master's and doctorate level education in computer science and engineering.
  • Placements: IIIT Bangalore has an excellent placement scenario owing to its focus on Masters and PhD education. Many top firms that prefer specialized graduates in diverse CSE streams visit the campus for placements.

I feel the primary point of difference between NITs and IIIT Bangalore is that NITs mostly focus on placements at the undergraduate level. IIIT Bangalore's main focus has been providing quality education at the master's and doctorate levels. Still, to answer your question, IIIT Bangalore is better than top NITs in almost all aspects.

How is the M.Tech course for Embedded Control and Software in IIT Kharagpur?

AS
Aman Sharma Posted On : March 23rd, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (2022)

My sister was a part of this course at IIT KGP and she found it extremely interesting and aligned with her interests. The course is industry oriented covering a number of topics like

  • Product Design
  • Modeling of systems
  • Software implementation and Verification
  • Product Validation

Basically, all aspects of product design are covered under this course. In the First Semester, it covers topics related to Embedded systems, Control Engineering and Software Engineering and in the second semester, you are free to choose electives of your choice.

As far as placements are concerned, top big names like Robert Bosch, KPIT, Cognizant and Cypress Semiconductor visit the campus for placements.

However, interdisciplinary courses face a lot of issues during placements since this course is not known to many companies. This is because it falls under a different center named ATDC(Advanced Technology Development Center)

To prepare for the interview one needs to go through concepts of signals and systems, processors and controllers, C language, and Assembly language.

Which one should I choose, IISc Bangalore CSA for an MTech (TA) or Amazon SDET (with CTC around 45+ LPA)?

PP
Pratik Parikh Posted On : July 18th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

The choice between IISc Bangalore CSA and MTech TA or a job at Amazon depends on your preferences and future prospects. If you have a passion for software/application development, then the SDET role at Amazon will give you an edge overcome who chooses to do MTech first. If you are worried about acquiring CS knowledge, trust me MTech is not the only way.

Nowadays big companies offer amazing courses that keep you at par with industry trends. Moreover, as an Amazon SDET, you will get the opportunity to work with some of the most talented engineers from top universities around the world which will be an enriching experience.

However, if your interest lies in core computer science, then an M.Tech at IISc Bangalore will give you a better understanding of core CS subjects.  An MTech will help you to secure jobs at FAANG, such as Amazon AWS or Google’s Core Search team. An MTech will also be beneficial if you are looking for specialized jobs like CPU Performance Architect at AMD or AI Compiler Engineer at Facebook. The major criterion for such kind of job is to have a research experience in relevant fields. An M.Tech from IISc will also open your doors to other opportunities like Applied Scientist/Machine Learning roles at FAANG. You can also get pursue Ph.D. from a top foreign university. after completing your MTech. Both options are very good and have their own sets of pros and cons.
