Should I choose NIT Trichy metallurgy over NIT Raipur ECE?

RP
Rani Pandey Posted On : April 1st, 2021
Studied Mechanical Engineering at National Institute of Technology, Raipur (2020)

My friend is currently pursuing B.Tech from NIT Raipur in the mechanical department. His honest opinion says that you should go for metallurgy at NIT Trichy. Here’s why

  • If you went for the wrong branch or found out later that this is not your cup of tea, then after the 1st year you will have an option called branch sliding. In this process, you can change your branch from the current one to the desired one based upon the number of vacancies and score.
  • If you went for the wrong college, then there's no option as a college slide! You’ll have to devote your 4 years in that college anyhow, except if you again decide to give mains.

So, if you simply want to get into a better place then choose NIT Trichy. This is because you can get the advantage of branch sliding anyhow. However, if you don’t want to take risk of not getting the desired branch, then go for NIT Raipur.

At last, sort your preferences and know your sole aim. Because in the long run, your happiness and satisfaction are what matters the most!

Which should I pursue between mechanical at UIET Chandigarh and metallurgical engineering at PEC Chandigarh?

SK
Shanaya Kapoor Posted On : May 4th, 2021
Studied at Amity University (2019)

Surely, Metallurgy at PEC over Mechanical in UIET. There are various important reasons behind this: Placements in PEC are better, companies like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. visit campus for placements.

Though metallurgy has fewer placements than other branches in PEC, once you are in PEC and if you are focused enough, you can go for an upgrade after 1st semester on the basis of CGPA. To aim for it, keep the following things in mind -

  • At most, only the top 10% of the class can be upgraded.
  • The branch you want to be upgraded to will only be available if it has vacant seats.

PEC is far superior to UIET in terms of cultural and other extracurricular activities. If you don't have any branch priorities, I'd recommend metallurgy in PEC.

Which is better, ECE at VIT Vellore or metallurgy at PEC Chandigarh?

KS
Khushi Sharma Posted On : May 4th, 2021
Studied at Delhi University (2019)

My brother had the option of VIT for CSE on merit still he chose PEC metallurgy. There are various reasons as to why he took that decision:

  • VIT is more expensive. Even if he had gone on merit, it would have cost him much more than PEC.
  • Placements in core companies in ECE are negligible. You can sit for IT companies, but they pay less to ECE undergraduates than CSE counterparts.
  • If you are a north Indian, culturally VIT might be different and might take time to adjust.
  • Metallurgy is an undervalued branch in India; many of my seniors are pursuing MS from Germany, the United States, and France, and some have gone to IIMs and FMS with strong credentials.
  • One of our seniors received a PPO of 15 lakhs, which is more than many students from elite branches.
  • You can choose to upgrade, but you'll quickly realize that it's not that simple because the grading criteria favors those who are less deserving (no offense).
  • Whether you accept it or not, those who claim that placement in metallurgy is poor (as it is in all branches except CS/IT) are correct. Placements in the core are hard to come by.
  • Only 4000 people in GATE are from metallurgy, whereas there are 1.8 lakh from CSE and 2.1 lakh from Mechanical, implying that the probability of you getting a PSU is greater than that of a mechanical engineer.

I personally believe VIT is overrated because a friend who did not even pass mains received 2000 AIR in VITEEE. In the CBSE 2016 boards, he scored 78 percent, which was below average.

Is it really worth joining Material Sciences and Metallurgy Engineering at PEC, Chandigarh?

NS
Neelam Shah Posted On : May 3rd, 2021
Studied at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh (2019)

It depends upon your expectations, your goals, your abilities, etc. The worth of doing Material Sciences and Metallurgy Engineering at PEC Chandigarh will depend on the following factor:

  • If you gave your very best at the entrance exams but still could not score well enough to get a higher rank which would have given you an option for a better college or branch, then probably it is best to move on and choose the branch and the college. There will be opportunities here as well, no doubt about that.
  • If you think you did not give your full efforts and you could do better in the next year, then definitely you should drop a year for better preparation. It is better to drop rather than lamenting in the future that you did not give your 100% and got stuck here.
  • If you prefer engineering and you are passionate about the subject, then the college reputation and brand should not bother you much. It is about the learning you would get and not about other stuff like rankings, placements, etc. You would get plenty of options and opportunities here as well and after graduating too.
  • If placements matter to you more than anything and you do not have any preference about the branch you would get, then definitely you should prefer a college with a better reputation, placements, etc.

Which is better, production engineering or metallurgy engineering at PEC Chandigarh?

JH
Jahnvi Hirandani Posted On : May 4th, 2021
Studied Electronics and Communication Engineering at National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra (2021)

I have friends studying production engineering at PEC Chandigarh and they have come across that it is somewhat similar to mechanical engineering. You can expect a lot of mechanics and physics, however, some subjects differ as you get into the core.

Coming to the question, it totally depends on your pool of interest whether you are into mechanics and production or metallurgy. Here are two major factors you might consider before choosing any of them

  • Production Engineering can get you jobs and packages similar to mechanical engineering. Also, it is a versatile branch where you can learn about manufacturing, operation, maintenance, etc.
  • If you are planning to get into research work after completion of engineering, then you must choose Metallurgy. It has broader research scopes than production engineering.

At the end of the day, follow your passion and know where you can invest these 4 years of your life. Nevertheless, if getting a job is your goal then go for production engineering. On the other hand, metallurgy engineering can open doors for good research work if you are interested in doing so.

Gargi Aagarwal Posted On : April 30th, 2021
B.E Mechanical Engineering, Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh

Always pursue what you are interested in because if you love to do something in a field particularly, you will definitely achieve heights. Since I have a few friends at PEC, I can give you some idea about the Metallurgy course offered there.

PEC-Metallurgy:

  • The alumni base of PEC Chandigarh is immense and they still make huge donations for students.
  • If you need the best facilities such as college hostel life, high-speed Wi-Fi, Co-curricular activities Join PEC.
  • But, quality of education plays a vital role which is average at PEC.
  • However, you will surely get placements.

Here’s a brief comparison of the institutes.

Parameters

PEC Chandigarh

Pantnagar University

Average CTC

10.2 LPA

7 LPA

Highest CTC

42 LPA

11 LPA

Course Fee

3.45 lakhs

2.31 lakhs

Now, if you want to do research or want good placements, don’t even think about Pantnagar.

Which college is better: NIT Surat chemical or NIT Surathkal metallurgy?

RR
Rohit Roy Posted On : July 9th, 2021
Studied at NIT Trichy (2019)

Considering the opportunities which may get available for you in the future, I would suggest you go for Chemical Engineering at NIT Surat as it would be a better option over metallurgy. As my sister studied there, I am very well aware of the college and its pros and cons.

  • Many PSUs and organizations recruit students of the Chemical Engineering department from NIT Surat.
  • Some of these PSUs which recruit from the college include BPCL, HPCL, IOCL, and COAL India.
  • Many people consider NIT Surathkal to be better than NIT Surat based on incomplete information and the NIRF ranking released by the Ministry of Education, India.

Should I join metallurgy at PEC chandigarh though I have interest in CSE or should I drop an year to make it to IITS/NITS/BITS?

SD
Sajhbati Dasgupta Posted On : September 17th, 2022
Studied at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh

If you are interested in CSE and have the confidence that you will be able to get IITs/NITs/BITS, you can take a drop year. But this option has its risks. PEC Chandigarh offers branch sliding options. Although the cutoff requirement is high for CSE, it's certainly doable with hard work. This way you won’t have to worry about a drop year.

SS
Samriddhi Sarkar Posted On : June 28th, 2021
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2019)

Having friends studying in both the colleges, It is suggested that you go for NIT Jamshedpur metallurgy would prove to be a better option because the placement records of the college are pretty good.

  • More than 78-80% of students get recruited every year from this college and get offers from the core and non-core companies.
  • It has also had the locational advantage of being situated in the city of Tata’s and companies like Tata Steel, Tata Tinplate, Tata Motors, and Tata metals recruit.
  • The laboratories and campus infrastructure of the college are extremely good.
  • IIEST has pretty good campus and has really great faculty members as well.
  • For placement core companies like IOSL, Vedanta, etc visits the college’s campus for recruitment.
  • Many consultancies and finance firms also recruit students from the metallurgy department of this college.

IIEST Shibpur

Fees

Both colleges are good in their own ways. They can also be considered a good option for your education only after good research is being made in regard to your requirements. Ultimately it is your choice, but due to its locational advantage, I will suggest you go for NIT Jamshedpur.
