Thapar University is not good for doing Ph.D. The Computer Science department is full of people who are self-involved.
Except for a few faculty members, others are not good. They will not help you in your research work and due to which you could miss deadlines.
Clearing GATE and then going for some decent college is the better option. Your thesis will be the real mirror of what you do during your entire Ph.D program. Work hard and get into one of the prestigious colleges in the country.
We can say that give your best shot in the GATE exam and get your seat reserved in some decent college, so that you gain some knowledge along with the hands-on industry training.
My friend had options of Ph.D. from JU, IIEST as well as IIT Patna and still chose IIT Patna. She claimed that IIT Patna had a better research culture and the professors get work published in very good journals, A/A* conferences, etc. The professors motivate the students for the same and this aspect attracted him the most. However, your personal preferences also come to play here. So consider the following points
Choose IIT Patna for its research culture and not the IIT tag.
No, NIMHANS does not have registration as of now. The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) recognized NIMHANS’ M.Phil Clinical Psychology course from 2010–11 to 2014–15 as per the RCI’s 2017 List of the Institutions Approved by RCI. But now it does not. However, it does not mean the NIMHANS M.Phil Clinical Psychology course is invalid or not recognized.
NIMHANS enjoys the status of an ‘Institute of National Importance ’ owing to its top-notch education quality and huge contributions to society. It therefore has become autonomous and has the right to regulate all its functions like starting a new course, conducting exams, recognizing its own degrees, etc. So, no approval of RCI is required for the degrees awarded by NIMHANS.
In simple words, NIMHANS’ M.Phil Clinical Psychology degrees are no longer recognized by RCI but by NIMHANS itself because it’s now an Institute of National Importance. As for the value of its degrees, they enjoy good recognition globally.
I think IIT Gandhinagar MTech is a safer option to go with than a direct Ph.D. from IIT Patna. IIT Gandhinagar provides better learning experiences and opportunities to explore than IIT Patna. IIT Gandhinagar CSE faculty is exceptionally good and will help you if you are willing to do Ph.D. after MTech.
Unlike PhD and MTech guarantees a degree within 2 years and so if you end up changing your mind later you will not have wasted 5-6 years. You can decide whether to do Ph.D. or not while pursuing your MTech and play safe.
The overall academic experience and campus life are better at IIT Gandhinagar than at IIT Patna. Be it the food, facilities, faculty, alumni, or placements, IIT Gandhinagar has it all.
IIT Delhi Ph.D is considered valuable both academically and professionally. It portrays a high level of expertise and knowledge in a specific field of study. It also has a rich research culture and thus its Ph.D. degree holds quite a value
A Ph.D. degree from anywhere is just a means of opening more opportunities and its value is determined by how well you avail those opportunities and making the most out of them. Similarly, a Ph.D. from IIT Delhi surely opens numerous doors based on your area of research, research method, research advisor, and various other factors.
A well-known professor, Dr. Naveen Garg, CSE, completed his Ph.D. from IIT Delhi and is considered one of the smartest professors in the CSE department. He completed his B.Tech and Ph.D. in Computer Science from IIT Delhi, was a postdoctoral researcher at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Informatik, Germany, and became a professor at IIT Delhi in 1998. He largely contributed to the Design and analysis of approximation algorithms for NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems arising in network design, scheduling, routing, facility location, etc. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore, and was awarded the SS Bhatnagar Award for Mathematical Sciences in 2016.
If he can make so much out of his Ph.D. anyone with the right mindset and determination can!
Yes, it’s possible to pursue a Ph.D. from a foreign university after an MTech from IIT Guwahati or IIT Hyderabad. However, you have to choose your MTech guide very carefully as the recommendations of professors are very necessary for Ph.D. from a foreign university. Many professors have excellent connections in universities abroad and these recommendations are highly useful to make your career smooth.
In order to determine which professors have such backgrounds and connections, contact the students who have already done their MTech under them.
Yes, everyone who clears the entrance exam for MPhil Clinical Psychology at NIMHANS is called for an interview. However, not everyone gets selected because the number of seats available is very low in comparison to the shortlisted students.
The interviewers don’t ask much technical questions and usually assess your personality and talents. The most common question asked is ‘Why do you want to join this specific course?’. So, it’s better to prepare for it beforehand. Sometimes candidates might be enquired about their post-graduation thesis.
Usually, it’s just a very personal interview with no technical questions so don’t worry about preparing for it and just be your real self.
The duration for Ph.D. in any department depends on the guide under which you are doing your research work. The average duration to produce good quality work with a competent supervisor is 4-5 years. If you get an A grade from all the examiners including foreign examiners, you don’t have to do the Thesis Viva. But a committee is formed by DRC to conduct a viva within IIT Roorkee.
Choosing the guide is a crucial matter for Ph.D. students as the same guide can help you get the degree very quickly while some guides can prolong the duration unnecessarily. Before finalizing your guide, conduct research on his credentials by talking to students he has dealt with in the past. It’s your guide who keeps who assists and motivates you throughout your research work. It’s better to stay away from professors who give C or C+ grades to M.Tech thesis students. This grade reflects nothing but the failure of the guide itself. You can find many such professors in ECE, though I don’t know if these can be found in the CS department or not.
IIT Bhubaneswar offers Ph.D. programs for Engineering, Basic Science, Geoscience, Climate Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Management. The eligibility criteria for Ph.D. programs at this institute is an M.Tech/M.E degree in relevant discipline with minimum CGPA of 6.5 out of 10 or 60% aggregate from a recognized board.
The Ph.D. programs offered in IIT Bhubaneswar are quite good and offer great exposure as the institute has collaboration with foreign universities such as the University of Warwick, University of Southampton, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, University of Western Ontario, University of New York, University of North Dakota USA, and McGill University.
It also offers decent placement with around 89% placement rate as observed in the year 2019. Top Recruiters included Amazon, HCL, IBM, Infosys, Samsung Electronics India, DRDO, Accenture, WIPRO, OYO, Adobe, etc. The highest salary package offered during the placement was around 39 lakhs per annum and the average salary package offered was around 11 lakhs per annum.
I guess you are enquiring about the research culture of IIT Kharagpur rather than the life of a Ph.D. student as his/her life is based on research only.
It is not necessary to be confined within the walls of your department lab as a Ph.D. student. Some choose the relaxed way and enjoy their campus life to the fullest as well.
