How is the hostel for girls studying PhD at IIT Kharagpur?

AA
Aishwarya Anand Posted On : March 28th, 2023
Ph. D. from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP)

Most MTech and Ph.D. female students are assigned the following hostels

  1. Sister Nivedita
  2. Rani Laxmibai
  3. Gokhale halls of residence
  4. Mother Teresa hall

All these hostels are in close proximity to the main building and entrance thus making it easy for female students to commute to and fro from the hostel.

A typical room in these halls of residence consists of proper bedding, a table, a chair, and a LAN port. Every hostel has its own mess faculty that works under the supervision of the hall management committee or private contractor. The best part is the flexible environment posing no restrictions on girls and no discrimination between boys and girls.

IIT Kharagpur offers the best hostel life with a splash of greenery, tranquility, and a serene environment.

I have been studying for an MSc in chemistry from IIT Hyderabad, but my 12 marks are just 61.5%. Will I qualify for a PhD abroad?

SK
Sabitha Krutarth Posted On : May 20th, 2023

For a PhD, class 12th marks are given considerably less importance given that your graduation and post-graduation grades are great.

For a Ph.D. abroad, since you will be seeking direct admission into the university and not approaching a specific professor, your past academics matter a lot. Having good class 12 marks, graduation, and post-graduation marks will improve your chances of admission and it’s always better to play safe.

In case of average marks, you have the option to write to a professor in Europe who is working in a field that aligns with your research project topic. If you share a common ground with any professor you can get admission by skipping the entire formal admission procedure although you might have to appear for some interviews that will evaluate your research caliber.

Overall, my recommendation is to apply everywhere as long as money is not involved. In cases you are required to send documents or GRE scores you need to be careful.

I will complete my MSc in applied geology next year from IIT Kharagpur. What should I do to opt for a PhD program at IIT Bombay/IIT Kharagpur?

AJ

The first step in the journey of getting a Ph.D. degree is giving either of these exams; GATE, NET, CSIR, or UGC. Next, you have to decide on a particular field in which you will be conducting your research. After this, you have to look for a faculty advisor that has experience in the kind of research work you are looking for. His teaching style should necessarily align with your learning style. Conduct extensive research on the topic you will be working on.

IIT Bombay: Here, you are required to do some coursework on the topic you have chosen. Choose the course that will give you more opportunities than others. Most Ph.D. students take some courses only to make up the required credits. This is not right as you will miss the opportunity to learn so much from every department. The most preferred courses are CS and Modelling at IIT Bombay.

One can even upgrade their skills in Mathematics and Statistics. Other courses that might help you in research work are fluid mechanics, soil mechanics, inorganic chemistry, solid-state physics, and thermodynamics.

Basically, you should choose your coursework not only for credits but to get knowledge of the research work you will be doing. Seek help from your advisor on the same.

How is MS by Research at IIT Madras different from Phd? Considering both are research focused programs.

RB
Ranjini Banerjee Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Research Scholar at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

The basic differences between MR at IIT Madras and Ph.D. at IIT Madras are

  • Research: MS program has less research work than Ph.D. It is considered an extended version of MS and many MS students go for a Ph.D. afterward.
  • Degree: An MS degree is awarded if the student has a minimum of 1 international conference paper and if the panel is satisfied that the work has met the standards of the institute. Whereas a Ph.D. is awarded only when the student has a minimum of 2 international journal papers and if the panel is satisfied and considers it as per the standards of the institute.
  • Coursework: An MS student needs to take at least 5 graduate courses whereas a Ph.D. needs to take 4. Additionally a Direct Ph.D. or M.S.+PhD. needs to take 8.
  • Duration: The time taken to complete an MS program is between 1.5-3 years whereas for a Ph.D. and M.S. + Ph.D it takes 3-5 years. This duration might be increased in case a student is unable to complete it in the given time frame.
  • Viva: In Ph.D., you are required to pass a challenging Viva Voce, while in M.S. you need not. The difficulty level of this viva varies from department to department.
  • Stipend: Under the HTRA scheme, an MS student gets INR 12400 while a Ph.D. student gets INR 25000.

Despite these differences, the general routine and schedule of both MS and Ph.D. are similar. Ultimately, more than your program, your research topic and performance will matter.

Can I pursue ph.d after complete my IPM course from IIM Indore?

AS
Ashish Singla Posted On : August 27th, 2021
Studied at IIM Indore (2019)

The IPM course in IIM Indore used to be a diploma course and earlier it was not possible to do a Ph.D. after graduating. But now because the five-year integrated IPM program is a degree course, you can easily enroll for Ph.D.

To the best of my knowledge, if you are a commerce student you are not eligible for the IPM entrance exam that is IPMAT. Commerce students with maths as a subject are still eligible for the paper. The IIM authority has clearly stated that maths has to be a compulsory subject in class 12th to be eligible for IPMAT. It is a primary criterion. You can also be eligible if maths is an optional subject instead of PE or CSC.

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : May 15th, 2023
lives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

Unfortunately, my knowledge is limited to Amity Gwalior only as my brother is an alumnus of the same. The program offered in Psychology at Amity Gwalior are

  • M. Phil (Clinical Psychology)
  • M.A. (Applied Psychology)
  • M.A. (Clinical Psychology)
  • Ph.D. (Psychology)
  • Ph.D. (Psychology) - Part Time
  • BA(Hons.) Applies psychology

Pursuing a course in Psychology from Amity Gwalior, be it M.Phil, PG or graduate will be very useful as the courses are taught by extremely learned professors that adopt excellent pedagogy. The post-graduate courses focus on research and the graduate courses focus on building knowledge and experience. The classes are dynamic and interactive. Students come up with new ideas and there is no rigidity. The course syllabus is also flexible giving considerable freedom to the students to explore the subject.

How is IIITM Gwalior for a PhD in CS/IT? Will it be better than VNIT Nagpur (taking the research in CS into consideration)?

BS
Bidita Sinha Posted On : June 1st, 2022
studied at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur

VNIT Nagpur is a better option for CS. The CS department has excellent professors. The labs are well-equipped to carry out research projects. The institute organizes many coding related events throughout the academic year. If you are interested in a professor's area of research, you can approach them about it.
