NIT, Srinagar has been ranked 67 by NIRF,2020. The Mechanical Engineering department of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar offers full-time BTech and MTech courses.

The faculty of the department is experienced and well-qualified. A lot of emphases is laid upon practical exposure and internships. Students are taken on industrial visits. Projects are given for a better theoretical understanding.

Students also get pre-placement training to get ready for the placement drive at the institute. Students are encouraged to get internships as it increases their chance to get good jobs compared to students who don’t pursue an internship.

Placements:

• Some students get paid internships while others work in unpaid settings. Companies like DRDO, IISC, NPTC hire students for internships stating that if students do well during their interning period, they would be offered a job once the internship period is over.

• Placement opportunities are average. Although many good companies visit the campus to hire students only a few companies are from the core Mechanical sector.

• The average salary offered is 6.5 LPA. Companies like ABB, L&T, Maruti Suzuki, Indian Oil, AFCON infra, IISC Bangalore, NPTC, etc.

• Students who do not get placed on campus apply for jobs off-campus.

• Compared to other branches like CSE or IT, Mechanical engineering has a lower placement average of around 70%.

• The highest salary offered is around 19 lakhs per annum.

The only drawback is that on-campus core- sector jobs are less. Searching and applying for jobs outside is always an option. Many students apply for jobs themselves and do get those jobs.

Talking of IIIT Bhubaneswar, its CSE branch is the best for engineering prospects. In comparison, IIITDM had the best growth in terms of academics and extracurricular activities. At the same time, NIT Srinagar enjoys a veteran image with the 36th rank for engineers by India Today.

Academics:

All three institutes accept JEE Mains scores for admission to the BTech courses.

• The required cutoff for CSE at IIIT Bhubaneswar in 2019 was 22614 (General).

• In 2019 the closing cutoff for Mechanical Engineering at IIITDM Jabalpur was 33875.

• The cutoff for CSE at NIT Srinagar was 37374 in 2019.
   

Placements:

• The placement percentage at IIIT Bhubaneswar for CSE students is 90%, with Microsoft and Amazon as top-most recruiters.

• At IIITDM Jabalpur, students receive high-end packages, with 75% getting placed in core sectors.

• NIT Srinagar CSE has a 90% placement rate for eligible students with the highest package at 28 LPA.

Faculty:

• The teaching quality at IIIT Bhubaneswar is relevant and high in excellence.

• Faculty members at IIITDM Jabalpur have done a Ph.D. in their domain of interest and are well-experienced.

• The student to faculty ratio at NIT Srinagar is 10:1, with new recruitments every year.

Infrastructure:

• IIIT Bhubaneswar has AC labs, WiFi facilities, Football and Basketball ground, and spacious classrooms.

• Infrastructure is one of the strongest aspects of IIITDM Jabalpur. The art building is inspired by Japanese architecture, and sports amenities are also exemplary in nature. Automobile and manufacturing labs also set it apart from other colleges.

• NIT Srinagar has courts for basketball, football, badminton, and table tennis; medical facilities are also above average. Wi-Fi, Library, and mess facilities are also appreciative.

While IIIT Bhubaneswar is best for engineering and coding culture, IIITDM Jabalpur is good in extra-curricular activities, and NIT Srinagar is a premier institute of northern India. All the above aspects should be considered while making a choice.

Generally, the only competitors of NITs will be IITs or other NITs. However, NIT Srinagar is not the most reputed NIT & IET Lucknow is a worthy competitor. Both of these are great colleges to pursue a course in CSE.

Admission & Eligibility:

• Admission to NIT Srinagar is through JEE main. Eligibility is a pass with a minimum of 75% marks in 10+2 exams with maths, physics & chemistry.

• Admission to IET Lucknow is through UPSEE. Eligibility is a pass in 10+2 exams with maths, physics & chemistry.

Fee Structure:

• The first-year fee at NIT Srinagar amounts to INR 1.36 lakhs in total and the total fee for 4 years amounts to INR 5.46 lakhs. Hostel fees are extra.

• The total first-year fee that includes tuition, exam fees, and other fees amount to INR 89,775 at IET Lucknow. The total fee for 4 years comes at INR 3.44 lakhs.

Infrastructure:

• IET Lucknow has a fully equipped and air-conditioned computer centre with high-speed internet. Other facilities include separate hostels for girls and boys, a gym, a medical facility, and a bank inside the campus.

• NIT Srinagar, apart from being a scenic place, also has very good infrastructure for CSE students. Other facilities include separate hostels for girls and boys, a sports centre, and a healthcare facility inside the campus.

Placement:

IET Lucknow:

• More than 70 companies visited IET Lucknow this year to offer placement to students.

• The highest number of students that got placed was from the CSE department.

• IET Lucknow students get campus placement opportunities from Adobe, TCS, India Bulls, LAVA, Syntel, Anglo-Eastern, Global Logic, Zia Semiconductor

• The highest CTC package offered was to a CSE student by Byju’s (INR 14 LPA).

• The average CTC offered this year was around INR 7 LPA.

NIT Srinagar:

• NIT Srinagar CSE students usually receive almost 100% placement.

• Major IT companies visit the campus every year to recruit top CSE student talents.

• Some of the famous recruiters are Wipro, Infosys, Amazon, Oracle, Capgemini, Oxigen, Pinnacle, HP, etc.

• The average annual CTC offered is around INR 9 LPA.

• The highest CTC offered was around INR 17 LPA.

The infrastructure and placement rates are very good at either of these colleges. The fees are slightly higher in NIT Srinagar. But the final decision must be taken according to the interest of the student.

NIT Srinagar is ranked 201 for BTech and 39 for BTech by NIRF 2020 and India Today 2020 respectively, whereas NIT Manipur ranks 158th for BTech by NIRF 2020. It has a 300+ acres campus area. It has a faculty strength of 70 members most of them being highly qualified and PhD holders.

NIT Nagaland is an autonomous university recognized by AICTE and UGC. They have a total of 43 faculty members, 27 of them being PhD holders.

NIT Mizoram is an autonomous university affiliated by AICTE. They have a total intake of 190+ students in each department. 

NIT Sikkim is an autonomous university approved by UGC and AICTE. NIT Sikkim offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

NIT Meghalaya ranks 61st for BTech by NIRF 2020. 104 students were placed in the 2018-2019 placement program conducted by the institute. It is accredited by AICTE.

A CSE graduate can work as a System Database Administrator, Computer Programmer, Engineering Support Specialist, Data Warehouse Analyst, System Designer, Software Developer, Software Engineer, Lecturer or Professor, Computer Operator and Research Analyst.

Students graduating with ECE can work as Electronics Engineer, Field Test Engineer, Network Planning Engineer, Electronics and Communications Consultant, Research and Development Software Engineer.
