Did I make a mistake by choosing IIT Guwahati CSE over IIT Varanasi CSE?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : May 4th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

It's difficult for me to say whether choosing IIT Guwahati CSE over IIT Varanasi CSE was a mistake without more information about your specific circumstances and goals. Both IIT Guwahati and IIT Varanasi are highly respected institutions, and both offer strong Computer Science programs that are rightly comparable in almost every aspect.

The placement scenario is similarly decent at both institutes with very little emphasis on research. The active Coding Club/ CSEA at IIT Guwahati gives it a slight edge over others. Both the institutes are excellent choices for whatever you want to do after graduation be it research, open source development, or a stable job.

The only distinguishing feature is the weather as IIT Guwahati has better weather conditions than IIT BHU. However, this flaw is compensated by better connectivity of Varanasi being on the mainland.

Is the electronics branch at KJ Somaiya good in regards to placements as well as faculty wise?

SL
Saija Luthra Posted On : January 9th, 2023
Alumni of KJSCE

As you may be aware, KJ Somaiya is autonomous, so the curriculum and coursework are both flexible. Furthermore, the exams will end earlier, resulting in longer vacations that can be used effectively for internships or summer courses. Because of its autonomous status, a large number of companies come to recruit.

If you score 50% overall, you are eligible to apply to all companies. Whatever your field, the same set of companies will come, and if you aren't eligible, you can apply from elsewhere.

NIT Surathkal is better than Delhi engineering colleges like NSIT, DTU and IIIT Delhi because it offers a more diverse experience. Here are a few aspects to consider

  • Reputation : NIT Surathkal enjoys the status of being an Institute of National importance and is fully funded by the Central government whereas DTU, NSIT, and IIITD are state government universities
  • Research culture: NIT Surathkal has a rich research culture and facilities and is one of the institutes which is selected for funding from HEFA
  • Academics : NIT Surathkal is a clear winner as its academic environment and curriculum are way better than Delhi colleges. Every year many students win International awards.
  • Campus life: NIT Surathkal has a private beach with a lush green campus of 300 acres. Moreover, its crowd is much more diverse than Delhi colleges which have 85% quota for Delhites.
  • Location : Situated near the IT hub, Bangalore NIT Surathkal students are exposed to more opportunities and a better IT environment. Many Bangalore IT companies give preference to NITK Surathkal students.
  • Placements : NIT Surathkal achieves 100% placement and has a better variety of recruiters than Delhi colleges.
  • Coding Culture: NIT Surathkal has received good rankings in the ICPC Asia Contest and every year many students are selected for Google Summer of Code.
  • ROI : NIT Surathkal offers a better ROI because it charges lesser fees than NSIT, DTU, and IIIT Delhi.

So, it's safe to say NIT Surathkal is a much better option than Delhi colleges.

BTech from APJ Abdul Kalam University (Graduated 2017)

No, NPTEL courses are not compulsory for B.Tech. In AKTU. These courses simply aim at adding qualitative knowledge among the students. In addition, every NPTEL course grants you extra 3 credits. If you are lagging behind in B.Tech. courses then NPTEL courses will definitely help you compensate for the loss.

So it can be said that for. B.Tech. student NPTEL courses are highly recommended but not compulsory.

How is the mechatronics branch of Thapar University?

GS
Gargi Sharma Posted On : August 10th, 2021
B.E. Computer Science, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (2021)

The branch is new to the university but your scope in it will be really good. It is a blend of mechanical, electronics and control, software, and computer engineering.

According to the latest trends, this will be a really good combination for the latest job requirements. As a student, you will get to learn concepts on control, design, and analysis. Basically, as a mechatronics graduate, you will be a master of many domains. This is surely a major plus point and you will be able to use these skills for research purposes.

Just ensure that you will work hard since there is a lot of wide scope for post-graduation. This is mainly true for universities abroad. The placements are good too.

Should I take the ETC dept. in IIEST Shibpur or the EE dept.? Why?

RG
Radhika Ghosh Posted On : April 1st, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur

The choice of the department for an engineering degree is a decision for one’s own career, which runs a lifetime. Among the above two options, it is better to choose EE than ETC, considering several factors discussed below.

  • The whole point of the choice is done keeping the college as constant, i.e. - IIEST Shibpur. Now a day, there are mass preferences and several misconceptions wherein people think about the consequences. Instead, you should consider your own capability of working on that specified stream, and how to be better at it.
  • You should go through the course structure of both the branches before choosing the stream and then make a decision. In IIEST Shibpur, both EE and ETC have an excellent reputation.
  • Electrical Engineering in IIEST has better opportunities, making use of the lectures of excellent professors of the electrical department. The laboratories of EE are a bit better than those of ETC.
  • For students in Electrical Engineering, there are chances of working in association with Civil and Mechanical Engineers, being in high profile projects. Even EE students become in-charge of National and State-level thermal grids, which is a huge position to work at.
  • For students in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, most jobs are generally indoors, including Electronics Systems analytics, Electronics Design, etc. ETE, being close to CSE, also offers good tech giant IT jobs to students having sufficient programming knowledge.
  • For GATE aspirants, ETC students get some amount of preference due to less difficulty in the syllabus. The syllabus mostly comprises subjects from their course, but for EE, there are subjects from both electrical and electronics, which becomes a huge syllabus to cover.
  • In Electrical Engineering, the rate of change of concepts is less with years, and so the degree shell life is 40-50 years. On the other hand, for ETC, the rate of change is quite fast, having a degree shell life of about 25-30 years, or even less.

These are some points that a candidate needs to consider before making a choice in the stream for IIEST Shibpur.

From where B.Tech is better? Thapar, Patiala or NIT Kurukshetra?

MA
Madhav Aneja Posted On : September 1st, 2023
Lived in Chandigarh, India

There are several factors that you need to consider while making a choice.

NIT Kurukshetra is definitely much more economical than Thapar. There was a time when Thapar was superior to NIT Kurukshetra. But with time, things have changed a lot for both the colleges.

At NIT Kurukshetra, the teaching quality varies with departments. Most professors are very learned and supportive. The professors of ECE department are quite learned. However, they are also very strict with their students. The placements are good at both. You can check the placement scenario at Thapar and NIT Kurukshetra

NIT Kurukshetra and Thapar are both good colleges and have their own strengths and weaknesses.

I have got a CGPA of 6.5 in my first semester of BTech in IIIT-Hyderabad. Can I improve it till 8.5 for getting an admission offer in a prestigious management institute in IIMs or ISB?

KP
Karthikeyan Palanisamy Posted On : January 30th, 2023
MBA Finance and Strategy, Indian School of Business (2017)

People usually have two opinions regarding MBA admissions. First, the admissions have little to do with numbers, second, CGPA and numbers are extremely crucial. My answer is here to support the second opinion and she’s light on the importance of CGPA.

Don’t decide on your next degree hastily before even completing the first one. You may want to explore more interests before deciding what you want to finally choose. Most people in IIT commit the grave mistake of not focusing on their Academics because they think that the ECE or IT sector is not their cup of tea. They forget that they are among the best computer science minds right now and do not make the best use of this opportunity. Identifying the opportunities offered by the institute is a crucial step before deciding on your future career. Even if after enough reflection you realize that the IT sector is not for you, you may explore other options.

Recently many alumni of IIIT Hyderabad have joined as graduates of IIMs after gaining work experience. But almost every alumnus I have looked up had an excellent CGPA, nothing less than 8.5.

So CGPA is not the only factor but is one of the most important factors during admissions at IIMs. One can get into an IIM even with an average CGPA but having a good CGPA will increase the plethora of opportunities definitely.

Is an ECE at NIT Goa better than a CSE at Jamia Millia Islamia?

RB
Rita Banerjee Posted On : August 25th, 2021
Studied Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering at Jamia Millia Islamia (2020)

I have cousins from both NIT Goa, and Jamia Millia Islamia and as they mention, the latter is famous for its CSE course. Usually, students do not leave the opportunity to go for the CSE course of Jamia Millia Islamia.

  • CSE is comparably better than most of the other branches in the educational domain.
  • CSE provides you job opportunities in accordance to what you have been exposed to, academically.
  • On the other hand, ECE is undeniably a good choice of stream.
  • For securing a good job position, you will have to pursue majoring in one of many programming languages or web development projects.
  • This translates to studying for your course and also pursuing something extra for exposure.
  • While CSE students are already part of studying these domains in general.
  • ECE students usually also go for the GATE exam.
  • However, the only upside ECE students enjoy is finding the slightest amount of vacancies in PSU, while CS students are somewhat one step lower than it.
Categories ECE at NIT Goa CSE at Jamia Millia Islamia
Course Fee 5.38 lakh 64,600
Highest CTC 13 LPA 20 LPA
Average CTC 6.5 LPA 8-10 LPA
Recruiting Companies L&T, Microsoft, Siemens, Infosys, etc. TCS, Wipro, Adobe, Cognizant, etc.

Apart from these few, it depends upon how hard you work. Be it ECE or CSE, you have to work hard and utilize the time and opportunities you get while studying in college.

Which is better for BTech from CS: IIIT DELHI or MNNIT, Allahabad?

AM
Atul Mahajan Posted On : May 11th, 2022
B.Tech Computer Science Engineering, Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (2020)

For a BTech in CSE, IIIT Delhi is way better than MNNIT Allahabad. It has better academics, curriculum, infrastructure, faculty, research facilities, and placements. IIIT Delhi has a pretty active coding culture as well. Each year, almost 100% of students get placed through campus drive at IIITD. According to the recent placement highlights, IIIT Delhi CS average package is around INR 17 LPA.
