I am a second-year BTech student at IIT Bombay. My suggestion would be that you go for Mechanical at IIT Bombay. IIT Bombay is placed #3 in the Engineering category by NIRF 2023, and #118 by QS World Rankings 2025. IIT Bombay is currently among the top 3 IITs, and one of the fastest-growing engineering institutes in India.
Here is a comparison table between IIT Bombay and BITS Pilani:

In 2023, 104 students were placed from B.E. CSE at BITS Pilani, and the CTC Range was INR 11-38 LPA.
IIT Bombay is a much more affordable institution than BITS Pilani, and it has equally good placements. This makes it stand much higher in terms of ROI. Moreover, the IIT Bombay tag holds a lot of repute both nationally and globally.
Because of these reasons, I would suggest you choose IIT Bombay Mechanical over BITS Pilani CSE.
According to me, B.Tech (Electrical engineering) from IIT Roorkee is a better option due to the following reasons:
On the other hand, the dual degree curriculum gives more importance to research and specialisation in electrical engineering.
Parameters | IIT KGP (Phase-I) | IIT Roorkee |
---|---|---|
Highest Package | INR 2.6 CPA | INR 1.3 CPA (Highest International- INR 1.06 CPA) |
Top Recruiters (2024) | OLA, OneByZero, SecPod, SIRION LABS, TCS Research, and others. | American Express, Barclays, Chegg Inc, Flipkart, Google, Microsoft, Myntra, and more. |
Unfortunately, the branch-wise placements are not available for either of these IITs.
I would recommend you choose B.Tech Electrical at IIT Roorkee over Dual Degree in Electrical at IIT KGP due to the above reasons.
Comparing a dormant branch like Civil with the most coveted branch CSE isn’t a very logical way of getting an idea of the placement scenario. Every student of the CSE branch ends up with a core job so its placement scenario is incomparable. Civil Engineering despite having a low demand has a decent number of core positions recruited.
Nowadays, the youth is not interested in joining PSUs mainly because of their low pay in comparison to software companies. Most civil engineering students are interested in core positions so the numbers in non-core aren't that great. Moreover, the number of students interested in MS, CAT, and GATE is growing every year affecting the placement statistics largely.
Here is a general comparison of placement statistics of both the branches

The statistics don’t exactly convey the students' intention. In reality, most students are able to secure a job in their desired field, and only a few fail to do so.
If you're considering attending an IIT for your academic pursuits, you may want to take a closer look at IITB. Not only do we offer top-tier facilities, but we also have a number of unique projects and programs that set us apart from other IITs.
One such program is Mood Indigo, which is Asia's largest cult fest and the world's second-largest. In addition to Mood Indigo, we also have the Pratham student satellite program and other exciting projects like AUV and Mini Aerial Vehicle. Plus, we have our own Aeromodelling club, which offers unique opportunities for students to get hands-on experience with aircraft design and engineering.
When it comes to job placement, IITB has a strong track record of success. Our graduates are highly sought after by top companies across various industries, which can help set you up for long-term career success.
Of course, choosing an IIT is a personal decision that should be based on a range of factors, including academic programs, location, and student life. While we believe that IITB is the best IIT in India, it's crucial for you to do your own research and determine which program is the best fit for your academic and personal goals.
Ultimately, you can succeed in any IIT program with hard work and dedication. We encourage you to carefully consider your options and choose the program that best aligns with your unique needs and aspirations.
One of my friends is studying at IIIT Kalyani, and he once tells me that this institute is nothing more than sarcasm. College administration and technical staff are just ridiculous, and there is nothing to say about them.
He also says that this institute does not even have a full-time registrar; rather, faculties are guest faculties from the local colleges.
However, this institute has planned to start PhD programs in recent days. Still, the reality is that the college administration is poor enough to handle the present student population that is approximately 350 students, very smoothly. It can be mentioned that the placement cell of this institute is completely unaware of its roles and responsibilities. They are an example of an ill-lethargic, lazy and greedy people group.
Thus, it can be concluded that this institute is visionless.
One of my friends is a student at IIIT Allahabad pursuing a dual degree in IT. My older brother is a student at IIT Mandi, where he is studying electrical engineering. Regarding the whole situation, let me be absolutely honest with you.

You must now choose where you will spend the next four years of your life. Examine your long-term priorities and goals, and make decisions accordingly.
Without any second thoughts, choose IIT Roorkee CSE B. Tech over IIT KGP CSE dual degree because dual degrees are usually less preferred by companies coming for placements.
It’s better to do MTech after BTech than to opt for a dual degree. The main reason is that in Masters you are open to changing your branch in case your interest goes to another field. But a dual degree means you will be studying the same field with no option of changing in between.
Another major disadvantage of a dual degree is that you are not eligible to change your branch to a 4-year program irrespective of your CGPA
You will see your batchmates leaving a year before you and getting offers and settling well before you.
IIT KGP no doubt is older and better than IIT Roorkee in every aspect. But as far as the program is concerned, a dual degree is not worth spending so many years at all.
IIT Delhi and BITS Pilani are two highly reputed institutions for engineering studies in India. I am a second year B.Tech Electrical student at IIT Delhi. During my time, I was faced with a similar dilemma. But I ended up choosing IIT Delhi over BITS Pilani for my studies.
I would recommend you choose Electrical Engineering at IIT Delhi over CSE at BITS Pilani because of these reasons:

Both Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at PEC Chandigarh are great options. You should choose one of these courses based on your preference. The placement opportunities offered are similar, except Mechanical students are allowed for less number of coding job profiles. So, if you are interested in coding, choosing Electrical will be better. According to PEC Chandigarh placement highlights of recent years, the average CTC for these branches stays in the range of INR 5-12 LPA.
