It’s true that NIT Silchar has a better campus life than other NITs and even NIT Trichy. It has the best infrastructure and facilities among all NITs offering a fairly better campus life. Here are some highlights of campus life here
But that’s where it ends. Apart from college life, NIT Silchar is way behind academics and the research quality is also poor. The placement scenario is also not par with the top NITs although a little improvement can be seen over the last few years. The number and quality of recruiters and placement opportunities in general seem to have improved but still, they have a long way to reach NIT Trichy standards.
NIT Silchar does have a peaceful campus life with a lot of free time, sports facilities, and a nature-friendly campus.
NIT Silchar has good placement records, especially considering its geographical location. Also, the placements are increasing year on year. As a student of CSE at NIT Silchar, I can inform you about the companies that visit my department for placements.
The companies that visit NIT Silchar for CSE placements include- Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Samsung, Amazon, DE Shaw & Co, Deloitte, L&T Infotech, Math Works, ITC Limited, Huawei Technologies, Power Grid Corporation of India, Arcesium, Reliance Jio, Razorpay, Infosys, Capgemini, Fanatics, KLA Tencor, SAP, Lowe’s, Optum, and GO-MMT group among others.
The placements at NIT Silchar are good for Mechanical, CSE, ECE, and E&I. For Mechanical, only a handful of PSUs visit the campus, and core placements are low. The figures aren’t good for the Civil and EE branches.
The campus placements at NIT Silchar are like most other average NITs such as NIT Raipur, NIT Jalandhar, NIT Rourkela, etc. or maybe slightly better with a handful of PSUs visiting the campus.
Both NIT Silchar as well as IIIT Jabalpur are backed by the Government of India and have similar facilities. The campus, faculty, and alumni network are great in both cases. However, there are some additional parameters in which IIIT Jabalpur fares better making it a more preferable choice. Some of them have been mentioned below
Overall, if you are passionate about academics and research, then go for IIIT Jabalpur but if you want a more vibrant college life choose NIT Silchar.
NIT Silchar is ranked 40th for Engineering and 83rd for overall performance by the NIRF 2023 Rankings. It is a tier 2 institute.
However, NIT Silchar carries the prestigious ‘NIT’ tag. Its worth shouldn’t be underestimated simply because it is located in a lesser-known city. It is in fact one of the oldest NITs and has one of the largest digital libraries in South Asia. It covers an area of 680 acres and has good academic and research facilities. The faculty is quite good and the placements are also increasing year on year. Top companies like Microsoft, Directi, Sap Labs, Oracle, Oil India Corporation, Power Grid, Bharat Electronics Limited, etc. visit the campus for placements.
Thus, NIT Silchar is a good choice to pursue your Engineering studies.

NIT Silchar is an engineering college so its MBA program isn’t exactly very credible. Tezpur University is a much better option than NIT Silchar in terms of faculty, exposure, and job opportunities. One needs to bear in mind that the reputation of the program matters more than the reputation of the institute.
Here are a few pros and cons of joining NIT Silchar for an MBA program
Cons:
So, so NIT Silchar is a decent choice for an MBA only if you failed to make it to the IIMs, private B Schools, IITs, other NITs, and Tezpur University.
First of all, it's highly illogical to evaluate colleges based on the highest package they offer because it has nothing to do with your individual placements. Rather you can refer to the average or median package while comparing colleges.

Hope the above information was helpful!
In my opinion, you alone can decide the best branch for yourself and others can only guide you. If you are evaluating and comparing branches based on placements, then trust me it won’t help in the long run. Unless you are genuinely interested in the branch, you won’t be able to pursue a career in it for a long time.
Mechanical
ECE
So, make sure you go for the branch that intrigues you and not the one that offers better placements.
