How is the IIT Mandi engineering physics program?

My brother was able to get EE in all the second-generation IITs except Indore and Gandhinagar. Despite various options, he chose IIT Mandi after considering a number of reasons stated below.

- Campus: IIT Mandi is known for its extremely beautiful campus. Those who are nature lovers will surely love the ambiance here.

When will the permanent campus of IIT Mandi be ready?
IIT Mandi campus is located in Kamand village, 14 km away from the town of Mandi, and is divided into two campuses; North and South campus. The distance between both the campuses is about 3-4 km and students take buses to attend classes from the residential campus to the academic area.
- The South campus is developed as the academic block along with the sports facilities while the North campus will house the residential blocks. Currently, the South campus is fully operational and B.Tech freshers are allotted rooms there.
- The North campus hosts some PhDs and 3rd & 4th year B.Tech students. When fully operationalized, it will host all the undergraduate students.
So you need not worry about the campus, it is ready to host all its residents for the next 4 years of their life in a picturesque location.
How is MTech in signal processing and communication from IIT Mandi?
The M.Tech in signal processing offered by IIT Mandi was launched in 2017 and thus is a relatively new branch. This program has been taught in the School of Computing and Electrical Engineering (SCEE) since August 2017.
The program is designed to give importance to theory and exposure to industry needs.
It consists of two parts
- coursework
- and a year-long project.
The course work is structured to give solid theoretical foundations and practical, hands-on experience which would enable the student to tackle problems in signal processing, communications, and machine learning holistically.
In order to prepare the students for product development by the end of the first year, courses like Advanced Programming Practicum, Embedded Systems, IoT Systems, and Systems Design are included in the curriculum. In addition to the post-graduate project, these courses familiarize the students with the system design aspects relevant to signal processing, communications, and machine learning. The majority of the faculty is in image processing so the maximum course work is from image processing and very little from communication.
The hostel facilities, however, are quite a disappointment with students getting extremely small double occupancy rooms double in single occupancy rooms. The hostel rooms lack basic amenities like tables, chairs, LAN ports, etc. The first-year students are made to stay on the North campus while most labs and classes are on the South campus. Students have to travel a hilly terrain of 3 km just for attending lab sessions. With all honesty, the placement scenario of this particular specialization is poor. The only advantage of IIT Mandi you will have is the amazing climate and surroundings. Thus, make IIT Mandi your last choice and try to target NITs instead.
How is the data science branch at IIT Mandi?
Data Science is a relatively new branch and only a little can be commented on its scope since it takes years for a branch to grow and prove its worth.
However, we can say that it seems a promising branch as many professors are involved in research related to data science and thus a lot of opportunities like projects are made available to the students. Additionally, some companies prefer Data Science students to students of other branches.

Since you are considering Amity University as one of the options, I assume that you have no financial constraints and can afford better private institutions. That being said, I have prepared a list of colleges in their order of preference. Most of these colleges charge half the fees than Amity.
- Private colleges like BITS Goa campus and Thapar University
- If the fee is the constraint, then go for government colleges like Top NITs, DTU, IIIT Allahabad, and IIIT Delhi
- IIT Mandi, Ropar, Hydrabad
- Lower NITs
- VIT, Amity University, SRM, and LMNIIT should be the last preference.
The above preference order is based on the quality of education offered and not the brand name It's exactly why I have placed the new IITs after NITs and Amity at the last.
Ultimately, it depends on what you are looking for in a university and what your specific needs and interests are. If you are looking for a more research-focused institution with a strong focus on technology and sciences, IIT Mandi may be a better fit. If you are looking for a diverse student population, a wide range of programs, and a focus on innovation, Amity University, Noida may be a better fit. How is M.Tech biotechnology at IIT Mandi in terms of research?
Choosing an M.Tech. in biotechnology for research purposes might not be a good decision.
For better job opportunities and placements, opt for other streams like CSC; otherwise, you will end up as a postgraduate in the biotech field without the perfect job you wish for.
The biotech department in most of institutions, including IITs, is weak in nature. Most students prefer other streams for their higher studies, which is a good idea to secure your career.
The only option left for you is to take the JRF and NET exams. If you have a strong interest in the biotech field prefer institutions like IISERs, TIFR, IISc, DU and JNU other than Mandi
Which college should I opt for, IIT Mandi (EE() or IIT Dhanbad ECE)? I am really interested in computer science and I have heard that branch change is comparatively easy in IIT Mandi.
IIT Mandi is a comparatively better option than IIT Dhanbad. IIT Mandi offers effective classes with good college facilities and an eco-friendly atmosphere away from the rush of the city.
Most significantly, you can easily change the branch after fulfilling the required criteria. IIT Mandi provides good hostel facilities and a resourceful campus to the students, which will help them study in comfort.
IIT Dhanbad will stress you with work and exams and is not good for your research work, but they offer commentable extracurricular activities to the students. If you are highly passionate about your studies and looking for a career in security, then you can definitely opt for IIT Mandi.

You have numerous options to reach IIT Mandi from Hyderabad. It will be a 12-hour journey from Hyderabad.
The best way is to catch a flight to New Delhi, and after that, you can travel by bus from ISBT Kashmere Gate to Mandi. From there, you can easily reach the campus.
You can opt for HRTC, which has more experienced drivers and is ideal for long, safe journeys at a low cost.
The next easy alternative is to take a train from Hyderabad to New Delhi, then you can either catch a flight or bus according to your convenience to reach Chandigarh and finally, you can reach Mandi by bus. From Mandi bus stop, there is a regular institute bus or HRTC that will take you to the IIT Mandi campus.
