Which is a better option, BITS or Thapar University?

AA
Arjun Agarwal Posted On : August 7th, 2021
Studied at University of Mumbai (2019)

If you have to make a choice between Thapar University or BITS Hyderabad, Pilani or Goa then I would suggest that you go for one of the institutes of BITS without any hesitation. But if you get CSE or IT at Thapar, go for it.

  • BITS is considered to be in the league of prominent Indian institutes like the IITs and the NITs.
  • If you are getting admission in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering at BITS Goa and Hyderabad, or an integrated B.Tech + M.Tech course then goes for Thapar University.
  • If you are eligible for admission into any of the BITS institutions, then you will also easily get CSE at Thapar.
  • There are students with a rank as good as 21,000 in Thapar University. They got admission there is they were not eligible for admission in any of the tier 1 colleges of India.
Categories Thapar University
Course Fee 13.23 lakhs
Highest CTC 23-24 LPA
Average CTC 12-14 LPA
Recruiting Companies  DE Shaw, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, etc.

Computer Science and Engineering at Thapar is totally worth it. The university is popular in India among the student communities because of the placement records which are considered to be extremely good.

Is the Dera Bassi campus of Thapar University equivalent to Patiala Campus? Is it worth the fees?

NP
Nitish Pal Posted On : August 10th, 2021
Studies Mechanical Engineering at Thapar University, 2023

Some of my friends studied at Thapar University, so I might be able to give you some information about it. So before you decide, here is some basic information that you should need to know.

Placement

  • The placement opportunities of the Patiala campus are similar to the Dera Bassi campus.
  • However, the hassle will follow up usually during the 7th semester since the daily journey might cause issues to students.

Faculty: It is quite good but not the same as the Patiala campus.

Facilities:

  • The Dera Bassi campus is good and has no issues whatsoever.
  • The guards in the institute are not as strict as the guards on the Patiala campus.
  • However, it does not have any similar sports facilities that you can usually enjoy at the former institute.
  • You cannot usually enjoy the cultural events in the institute.

Accommodations

  • The hostels are generally very good. The rooms are well established, furnished, and equally equipped with necessary items.
  • However, if compared with Dera Bassi campus, the food at the Patiala campus is very basic and can possibly be termed as tasteless.

The fee structure of the Dera Bassi campus is mostly low, but when shifting focus to whether or not it is worth it, then possibly it is not. Hope this helps answer your query.

Which one is better - Thapar University (EIC) or JIIT Noida (CSE)?

SM
Saloni Mohan Posted On : August 7th, 2021
Studied at Delhi University (2019)

Thapar University in all aspects is a lot better than JIIT. But I am not quite aware of the EIC branch. You can interact with ex-students of the institute online, to get a better idea about the course. If you think it will be a better choice, go for it.

  • According to placements, Thapar is much better than JIIT Noida.
  • Most of the companies that participate in Thapar’s placement program are well reputed like Microsoft, Infosys, and many more.
  • Thapar provides a better industrial exposure to their students.
  • After graduating from Thapar you can opt for both government and private sectors.
Categories  EIC at Thapar University CSE at JIIT Noida
Course Fee 13.23 lakh 9.22 lakh
Highest CTC 18 LPA 12-16 LPA
Average CTC 6 LPA 4-5 LPA
Recruiting Companies TCS, Tech Mahindra, Phillips, L&T, etc. Amazon, Adobe, Morgan Stanley, ZS Associates, etc.

Thapar University will be a much better choice than JIIT, as it is popular among students and professionals as well. Any branch at Thapar will prove to be more valuable than CSE at JIIT Noida.

Is it true that Thapar University offers scholarship to the top 3 three students of each discipline from 2nd year onward?

SG

B.Tech Civil Engineering, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (2018)

One of my friends graduated from Thapar University, he was a scholarship holder, So I think I can give you some information about the same.

According to the new rules at Thapar University, you will be getting a scholarship equal to the tuition fee of the current semester at Thapar University as per the following.

  • If you are in the first year and you are among the top 10% of the scorers concerning JEE Main of your branch.
  • If you are in the second year and your CGPA score is among the top 10% scorers of your branch irrespective of your JEE MAINS score.

You also have another way of getting a scholarship that falls under the category of ‘Merit cum Means’. If your father or any family member’s collective income is less than 3 lakhs (not sure of the amount but it should be around 3) and you have a good CGPA.

There’s also another Scholarship for students who score more than 95% in 12th Standard Board Exams which is equal to the tuition fee of two semesters i.e. full year. This scholarship gets continued till the Final year but with a stipulation to score CGPA greater than 8.5 in each year.

Is it better to pursue a BTech in BIT Mesra or in Thapar University, Patiala?

RD
Rajan Damodaran Posted On : August 11th, 2021
Studied at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra

Electrical Engineering is better to go for BIT Meresa whereas for everything else it is better to go for Thapar.

  • The quality of students will be much better in Thapar.
  • CSE has high cutoffs ranging from 190–210 JEE score and Mechanical and ECE also has students having around 170–175.
  • Whereas, in BITS, there will be many people who enter because they have a good board percentage, not a good JEE score.
  • For CSE and Mechanical, it has to be Thapar above BITS while for ECE and Electrical, BITS would be better.
  • Campus life and fests of Thapar are better as I have heard BITS has bad administration.
  • Thapar has increased its seats which has seen a fall in cutoffs of recent batches. The total batch strength is now around 1700.
  • The university has improved the existing labs and new labs have been created recently to get accreditations like ABET etc.

Check the following table for a brief insight into statistics for both institutions:

Parameters BITS Mesra Thapar University Patiala
Tuition Fee INR 75,000 INR 66,000
Placement Percentage 84% 99 %
Average Salary Package INR 11.76 LPA INR 8 LPA

The administration at Thapar University believes that the fall in the quality of students can be compensated by the improvement in these parameters resulting in an overall rise in rankings.

Why are the closing ranks of Thapar University going so low? Is the level of the institute degrading?

RM
Rohit Mathur Posted On : August 7th, 2021
Studied at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology

According to my brother who studied in Thapar mentioned that closing rank is not an indicator for the degradation of the institute.

  • Thapar University is considered one of the most prestigious colleges for engineering in the country.
  • It provides innumerable facilities and opportunities to all the students.
  • The ranks depend largely upon the level of the question paper designed. Previously, most of the candidates got a rank above 50,000, due to consideration of board percentages.

Last but not least we can say that closing rank does not define the college. The college continues to impart the knowledge and gives decent placement opportunities along with internship offers, which still attracts students.

Is Thapar University the best for CS engineering?

NS
Nandini Saha Posted On : August 12th, 2021
B.Tech CSE, Thapar University (2018)

Thapar University is a very reputed and popular engineering institute and it is one of the best institutes to pursue CS engineering. It is the best private university after BITS Pilani and is much ahead of other institutes like VIT and Manipal. It is even better than some of the NITs.

  • Faculty: The faculty of this college are great and have years of experience in teaching. They make the concepts look very easy for the students and also motivate them to do better in their academics.
  • Placements: The placements of this college are amazing too as the top package offered here was 44 lakhs per annum and the average package being offered here is around 7-8 lakhs per annum.

Hence, Thapar University is among the best universities to pursue CS engineering as its faculty is top-notch and it offers very good placements to the students.

Gargi Debnath Posted On : August 9th, 2021
Studied at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology

You will surely need a laptop as you will learn a lot of new things. A laptop is also required for reading e-books and using essential software. You should get a laptop with a decent configuration. One that fits your budget. Here are some other instances where you might require a laptop.

  • During the first semester, with C and C++ as well as Java in the second semester.
  • As far as lectures are concerned, you will need a laptop for ED-II during the lecture.
  • When you are working on presentations and projects, a laptop will be handy.
  • You can also save up on money by downloading PDFs of reference books and reading them on your laptop.
  • Many technical workshops organized by different societies also require laptops.

Let me tell you that while the laptop might not be compulsory, it is definitely necessary. You can borrow one from your roommates or friends if you do not have the budget for it. But, have one handy.

I got 141 marks in Thapar University's alloted mechatronics branch. Is there good placement in Thapar?

VS
Vicky Singh Posted On : August 11th, 2021
Studied at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology offers a B.E. in Mechatronics Engineering. The program is a fusion of electrical, electronics, and mechanical engineering. This course started only a few years back. I have a few friends who graduated from this branch recently and according to them, placement offers for this branch are not that great.

As a student of Mechatronics, you will be allowed to sit for both Mechanical and Electronics companies. Although, only a few students from this branch get placed. Also, students who got placement were either recruited by mass-recruiters or some IT companies. The average package offered for the students of this branch is around 4 LPA.

How good is the placement of the MCA at Thapar University?

JK
Jitesh Kumar Posted On : August 12th, 2021
Studied MCA at Thapar University (2019)

One of my friends studied at Thapar University. According to him, pursuing MCA at Thapar might not be a good choice. This is because a B.Tech in CSE graduate is always preferred over an MCA degree.

  • During placement interviews, the panelists will see in your resume that you have a BCA or B.Sc. degree in CSE.
  • Due to this, most of them assume that you didn't get an opportunity to study B.Tech so you chose BCA.
  • They tend to lean on B.Tech graduates, as they will help maintain the reputation of the firm.
  • The thing you can do after BCA is to get a lateral entry and obtain a diploma in CSE.
  • After that, you can try to take admission in the 2nd year of the B.Tech program at Thapar.
  • This will help you secure a better job opportunity than an MCA degree.
  • An MCA degree from Thapar will get you a salary package of 5-10 LPA.
  • A B.Tech degree will get you a 15-25 LPA salary package.
Category MCA at Thapar University
Total Fee 3.89 lakh
Companies Visited Tech Mahindra, Infosys, ZS Associates, Byju’s, etc.
Highest Package 23 LPA
Average Package 5-10 LPA

MCA at Thapar is way better than many other colleges like CGC Landran, Chandigarh University, etc. But it is important to remember that the recruiter at any IT company will always differentiate between an MCA graduate and a B.Tech CS graduate.
