What is your review of Life at IIM Ahmedabad?
Some of my friends studied at IIM Ahmedabad. According to them it is one of the best management colleges in India. Here’s some points about the college I gathered from them.
Infrastructure
- It has an extremely good campus infrastructure with classrooms, laboratories, libraries, sports complexes, auditoriums, that are up to the mark.
- The campus also offers WI-FI connectivity 24*7.
- The Hostels and Mess are also well equipped with numerous facilities.
Placements
- The institution has a well-organized placement committee.
- IIM Ahmedabad has a record of 100% student placements and summer internships for the past few years.
- The highest salary package goes up to 60 LPA.
Faculty
- The teachers appointed are highly qualified and have years of industry experience.
- They are also involved in research work and also offer consultancy services to many companies.
- The discussions in classrooms among students and faculty members are extremely enriching.
Curriculum
- The curriculum for first-year students is compulsory and covers topics like accounting and finance, behavioral science, communication, economics, IT, marketing and many more.
- You will be required to do an internship for around 8 to 10 weeks at the end of the first year of college.
- The course curriculum of the second year offers the students numerous opportunities to pursue studies in the fields of their interests along with several mandatory courses.
- The mandatory courses can provide you with a global and domestic context in the areas of entrepreneurship, and sustainability.
Alumni
- The Alumni network at IIM Ahmedabad has developed over the years and is surely one of the best.
- Industry leaders have been alumni of IIM A and a lot of them visit the campus regularly.
The overall environment is really good as not a lot of limitations have been imposed upon the students by the college authorities. The student crowd of the institution is also extremely good. Thus it is a good place for the students.

You can get detailed information about the shortlisting process at IIM Ahmedabad from various pages on the internet. However, having a good CAT score is not enough to secure admission at IIM Ahmedabad.
Here is my friend’s profile that didn’t make the final list. despite having a good CAT score and decent academic record.

So, the cut-off is not the ultimate factor to be selected. There are various other aspects that play crucial roles if you will be shortlisted or not.

The internship experience at CIIE IIM Ahmedabad is one of the finest experiences you will get and may even help you to become an entrepreneur yourself.
Opportunities are galore here and you will get the first-hand experience of understanding the technologies and business models being followed by startups all over the world. You will get in-depth knowledge about market research such as segmentation, gapping, opportunities, and drawbacks, etc.
One of my friends did his internship there during his summer break a few years back. Here are some of the things that he got to experience there.
- Work culture – The best thing about working here is this. All the interns play games like cricket together like a team.
- Networking – You will interact with lots of entrepreneurs and get exposure. There are various events such as Startup Saturdays and Tech 4Impact where you can make contacts with many budding entrepreneurs.
- Learning Experience – You can learn while you work and start your own business venture as well.
Thus overall it is a very nice and enriching experience to work here which you will cherish forever.
How do I prepare to get selected in IIM Ahmedabad?
To get admission in IIM Ahmedabad, you need to appear for CAT, first. International students need to appear for the GMAT. Students who score above the required cutoff and composite score, are shortlisted for the WAT-PI round. The final selection will be based on various factors such as your past academics, work experience, CAT score, performance in WAT-PI, etc. IIM Ahmedabad also looks for leadership qualities in students.
Clear your basics in English and Quants. Study newspapers and stay updated with the happenings around you. Solve puzzles. These are some of the things that you can do while preparing for IIM Ahmedabad.
After passing out of IIM Ahmedabad, will I be able to reach to the apex of the corporate world after 15 years of passing out?
IIM Ahmedabad offers excellent career prospects. Students of the institute dominate the management sector all across the country and abroad. Many of the alumni of the institute are working as CEOs and COOs of reputed companies. So, it’s entirely possible to reach the apex of the corporate world after 15 years of graduating.
Are the girls living in the campus hostel of IIM Ahmadabad or IIM Indore allowed to go out of campus? If yes, till when and what are the procedures?
At IIM Ahmedabad, there are no restrictions on hostel timings, clothing, or entry of the opposite gender. Without any restrictions, all students are free to leave and return to campus whenever they want.
There are no restrictions on what students can wear anywhere on campus, including in class. The only exception to this rule is that students should dress formally for company presentations.
Students have complete freedom to visit the other gender's hostels whenever they want. Many of my friends had, for all practical purposes, shifted to their girlfriends' hostel rooms and were rarely seen in their own hostels. IIM Ahmedabad gives its students a lot of freedom and believes in the spirit of personal responsibility.
All IIM Indore students, including female students, are permitted to leave campus. There are campus buses that leave at regular intervals. One can also book their own transportation. The only restriction is that everyone must return by 11:30 pm unless there is a valid reason to be outside, such as a late-night flight.
I am a class 9 student. What preparations should I make to get into IIM Ahmedabad?
Here are a few of the things that you should do to prepare.
High academic proficiency:
You have to score high marks in class 10th, class 12th, and graduation.
- Class 10th marks need to be 90+ ideally. The same can be expected from class 12th marks. The cutoffs may vary for science, commerce, and arts students.
- UG marks are another criterion for getting admission to IIMA. If you are an engineer, you got to score a CGPA of at least 8. Cutoffs may vary across various UG specializations.
Excellent CAT percentile:
- IIM Ahmedabad is the best business school in the country. It is obviously expected that the CAT percentile for admission to this prestigious institute will be high as well.
- A general Male engineer needs a 99.7+ with high academic grades to be shortlisted.
- If your academic grades are a bit bad, they have to be compensated with a higher percentile. But if you have poor academic grades, even a 100 percentile cannot help you. You won’t be shortlisted.
A well-rounded profile:
- Once you make it to IIMA, you will have to compete with the best brains of the country for the jobs as well as the internships.
- You need to have a well-rounded and balanced profile. This means you need to have academic consistency and great extracurriculars.
- If you have these, you stand a much higher chance to get a good internship or even a great job in the finals.
Apart from these, you need a lot of mental strength. IIMA is known to be exhausting and wearying right in the first year. You just need to work hard and always be at the top of your game. This is going to be the only way to survive, grow and do well in your academics there.
Are there international placements from IIM Ahmedabad placements?
IIM Ahmedabad had many students who secured international placements in cities across the world such as Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, and Qatar, etc. in the placement year of 2020. International offers were made in the domains of consulting, finance, general management, and sales & marketing. The salary data are provided below -
- Highest International CTC – INR 1.32 Crore ($180,645)
- Average International CTC – INR 61.76 Lakhs ($84,200)
Some of the reputed companies that visited the campus are McKinsey & Co., BCG, MasterCard, JP Morgan, TCS, Amazon, Microsoft, FinIQ, RPG, etc.
All in all, you will get ample opportunities for securing an international offer from the campus itself.
Why does IIM Ahmedabad have low percentile cut offs when they are only admitting students at 99.5+ percentile?
More than 90 percent of aspirants that apply for CAT are engineers. In order to maintain the diversity of people from each section, there are different cut-offs for people with different backgrounds. The 99.5 percentile cutoff mentioned in question was for the male applicants with engineering backgrounds.
It has also been observed in previous years that general applicants with non-engineering backgrounds have got a call from IIM Ahmedabad even by scoring less than 90 percentile. The following table shows the minimum cut-off percentiles for 2021-23 MBA Batch.

However, these are just the minimum cut-off percentiles after which you have been shortlisted, but the final selection varies upon various other factors such as Analytical Writing Test (AWT) and Personal Interview (PI), etc. You are not selected by the percentile alone.
A percentile of 99.5 means almost 1000 candidates which are more than the quota of seats allotted to engineering backgrounds students. If the criteria were percentile alone then all of the approximately 400 seats would have been filled by engineering background students only. Other background students are selected at a lesser cut-off compared to engineering students because they are judged upon the cut-off of their respective category. The distinct advantage to non-engineering background students is given only by IIM A so far, thus having low percentile cut-offs.
