Is it possible to get into SPJIMR if there have been backs during graduation?

DT
Deepak Tiwari Posted On : March 6th, 2023
PGPM in Information Management, S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) (Graduated 2016

This answer is based on the interview experience of a close friend who had backs during graduation. When enquired about the same, she told them that she has a good percentile despite that. The panelists contradicted her saying the other candidates also have an excellent percentile and academic background. They asked why should a person with a back be preferred over them. My friend told them she even had an extracurricular background and an overall good profile. Yet again the panelists were not convinced. She further said that it was her talent for never giving up that set her apart from others. The panelists told her she couldn’t make it because of her backlog and she easily gave up and left.

The conclusions I drew from this interview were

  • My friend, despite claiming that she never gives up easily, gave up once she was cornered. So don’t give up till the end
  • Prepare a justifiable statement to support your claim and be confident while delivering it
  • Have something exceptional up your sleeve to overshadow the backs in your records
  • Don’t just blabber and sound as genuine as you can.
  • Take up a specific skill and ace it so well that all your past drawbacks can be covered through it.

So it’s eventually your luck and your confidence that will decide if having a back will hinder your path to success or not.

What should be the profile and CAT percentile for calls from SPJIMR?

MR
Madhav Reddy Posted On : March 17th, 2023
Studied at SPJIMR ,Mumbai

It is essential to ensure that you secure a percentile of at least 95 in the CAT and have an excellent academic background. To increase your chances of getting selected, it is recommended to aim for a score above the 98 percentile as they have limited seats for non-Maharashtra students. If you have a work experience of at least three years and have won national-level competitions, then you may get a call even at the 85 percentile.

SPJIMR tends to prefer candidates with a profile of 90+ in academics, CAT/XAT/GMAT, and extracurriculars, with keywords such as national level, work experience at renowned companies like Google or Microsoft, and alumni from top institutes like IIT, NIT, BIT, SRCC, Stephens, and so on. They look for a "spike" in one of the areas, which means that if you have good academic scores, extracurricular achievements, and work experience, you can still stand out if you have a particular talent or accomplishment in one of the areas. For example, being a state-level Ranji player can spike your extracurriculars and increase your chances of getting a call from SPJIMR.

Although most candidates get selected based on their extraordinary academic scores, some exceptional candidates with unique talents and accomplishments in extracurriculars, work experience, or other areas can also secure a place in the program. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that you have a well-rounded profile with decent academic scores, extracurricular achievements, work experience, and a spike in one of the areas to increase your chances of getting selected by SPJIMR.

Between IIM Kozhikode and SPJIMR, which is better for an MBA in finance?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : August 18th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Both IIM Kozhikode and SPJIMR offer an excellent curriculum in MBA that is taught by the best and most learned faculty. One of my cousins chose IIMK over SPJIMR because she was inclined toward Finance specifically. Additionally, the IIM tag helped her avail better opportunities.

SPJIMR on the other hand has a few drawbacks that make you want to reconsider joining it. Firstly, it has a triple occupancy room system which may not be fit for everyone. Secondly, its culture is a bit restrictive focusing only on mental development.

Overall, If you are a CA or a CFA graduate with Financial Corp experience, you will be exposed to similar cultures and opportunities on both campuses. But if you are an engineer, you will get better opportunities at IIM Kozhikode.

Ultimately, the final decision is yours to make!

At SP Jain (SPJIMR), is it possible for a guy specialising in information management to get a job in finance or consulting or any other area?

RA
Rajesh Altekar Posted On : March 6th, 2023
MBA Finance, S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (1996

Yes, there is a possibility of getting a job in Finance or Consulting despite having a specialization in Information Management. The chances are low though and vary for every role.

Consulting: It is a very broad domain and comprises both Functional (Operations, Finance, HR) and Industry area (Automotive, FMCG, Electrical, Oil and Gas). The interviews for consulting roles revolve around the projects that a company is involved in. Hence, your specialization in Information Management is irrelevant.

There are many companies with dedicated BUs/areas for IT/Tech Consulting. They give r more preference to IM specialization and students with prior exposure and experience in technology.

Apart from consulting, other domains like Marketing, Operations, and Finance have little scope for IIM specialization. This is because companies prefer candidates with prior experience or current specialization in the required area.

My advice to you would be to select your minor specialization as your area of interest. So it’s possible to get a job in consulting despite having IM specialization but the probability is low for most of the domains.

How are CV points and extracurricular activities verified in SPJIMR by the placement committee?

KP
Koustav Pal Posted On : March 10th, 2023
PGPM in Operations and Supply Chain Management, S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) (Graduated 2021)

In SPJIMR, the CV points and extracurricular activities are verified through the submission of proofs that verify the credibility of the CV.

Emails: The most common method is through emails from managers or other authoritative people. The students send an email to the manager and request him to verify the points he has mentioned in the CV. If the person addressed the response through his official email id claiming that points are verified, the placement committee cross-checks the contents of the CV with the approval email and then finally approves it. Every single work in the CV is approved in a similar manner.

OTP Method: This method is most suitable when the managers have left the organization. For them, a One Time Password approach is followed wherein their identity is first verified using LinkedIn, after which an OTP is sent on their mobile number which is to be sent by the manager via email thereby validating their identity.

Certificates: Many points on the CV can be verified through Original Certificates or documents.

What is the difference if I choose FMS (Delhi), JBIMS (Mumbai) or SJSOM-IIT Bombay over IIM-B, SPJIMR and other such institutes that charge hefty for MBA courses?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : June 3rd, 2023

Choosing a B-school can be a tricky decision especially when it comes to ROI. I understand that ROI is one of the most important factors when it comes to MBA courses since funding your education with loans come with its own set of challenges. But the institutes that you have mentioned above certainly surpass the challenges since they belong to the tier 1 category.

You might come across articles and blogs stating that FMS or JBIMS do not provide a typical MBA environment but for me, that discussion does not even make sense. What is an MBA environment after all? You spent 2 years of your life at the campus and wish to land a good job. FMS, JBIMS, and IIT Bombay all three have good market reputations, they home the best candidates and charge minimal fees. So, if ROI is even a little bit of a concern for you, go for these colleges without any second thought or regret.

What kind of questions can one expect in the SPJIMR one-year PGPM interview?

TS
Trisha Somwanshi Posted On : March 17th, 2023
Studied at SPJIMR

To ace the two rounds of interviews, keep in mind that the first one focuses on technical skills while the second one assesses your fit in the company's culture. Nevertheless, expect some similarities in the questions asked. You should note that the interview will be in a group setting where you'll face 4-5 panelists. One of the questions you might encounter is related to India's e-commerce industry. In the second round, the panelists might inquire if your current job satisfies you and probe your moral principles and ethical code.

It is important to be well-prepared for both rounds of the interview. Take the time to research the company and the industry, and practice answering common interview questions. You may also want to prepare some questions to ask the panelists at the end of the interview to show your interest in the company and the role. Practice answering standard interview questions and prepare inquiries that showcase your interest in the organization and the position.

What is the average salary package for a PGPM course at SPJIMR when it comes to placements?

VS
Vishuv Sethi Posted On : March 10th, 2023
Business,Education and Real Estate Blogger

During SPJIMR Placements 2022, the average salary of the PGDM students was higher than the PGPM students. The average package statistics are

Particulars

Statistics

Average Salary

INR 23.6 LPA

Top 25% Average Salary

INR 31 LPA

Top 50% Average Salary

INR 28.7 LPA

The average salary is a rather misleading aspect to determine the worth of a college because the highly inflated results can pull the average towards one side. This works in the favor of the college and most times students end up getting misled.

However, SPJIMR was able to maintain decent placements even during the pandemic. Its one-year PGPM course enjoys a strong reputation among companies and witnessed some of the best CTC packages against the eligible roles and profiles.

With 93.1/74/92.5 in 10, 12, UG with no work experience, how much percentile can get me SPJIMR, NMIMS, and baby IIM like Shillong?

AG
Akriti Gupta Posted On : June 4th, 2023

Having no work experience is not the main barrier to get into B schools. Your 10th and UG marks are very good and 12th marks are decent, however, I want to make it clear that IIM Shillong is not among the baby IIMs or the new generation iims.

It is far better than new iims and making place among BLACKI. SPJIMR accepts CAT score for its admission and you will be requiring above 94 percentile for open category. NMIMS accept SNAP exam score. And for IIM shillong 95+ percentile is required.
