You need to have a high CGPA to change your branch at PEC Chandigarh. The branch change or branch upgradation option is given after the first year. The rules of branch change are as follows.

  • The availability of branch change options depends on the vacancies.
  • Students are required to have a minimum of 8 CGPA, to apply for branch change. However, the actual required CGPA varies depending on the branch and competition. In recent years, the CGPA required for CSE was 10. For Mechanical and Electrical, the cutoff CGPA was ~ 8.25.

CGPA requirement for CSE usually stays high. Upgradation to ECE, Mechanical or Electrical is comparably easier.

Is PEC becoming IIT Chandigarh?

AK
Akansha Kunwar Posted On : August 30th, 2022
studied at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh

There’s no news of PEC becoming IIT Chandigarh, in recent future. Initially, PEC used to come under Panjab government. But now it takes admission through CCMT.

Also, Panjab already has an IIT, i.e. IIT Ropar. All states of India have only one IIT now. Although UP has two IITs, these IITs were established with a gap of around 40 years. So, there’s a slim chance of PEC becoming IIT Chandigarh, anytime soon.

One of my friends was in a similar dilemma last year when she had to choose between NIT, Kurukshetra, and PEC, Chandigarh. However, she went on to chew NIT Kurukshetra over PEC and stated the reasons below for her choice

  • Campus: NIT Kurukshetra has a beautiful and more facilitated infrastructure that gives an edge to PEC Chandigarh.
  • Accreditation: NIT Kurukshetra is an NBA-accredited institute and thus has an upper hand over the PEC Chandigarh.
  • Syllabus: NIT Kurukshetra frequently updates its syllabus to keep it at par with the recent industrial trends and enables the students to study branch-specific subjects right from the first year.
  • Location: Undoubtedly, PEC Chandigarh seems to be at an advantage here. Chandigarh is a much more happening place. It’s a perfect place for students planning to appear for civil services, GATE, etc
  • Placements: The table below draws a brief comparison of the placement statistics of these institutes

How do people treat PECians (PEC Chandigarh)?

AK
Asif Khan Posted On : April 30th, 2021
Studied at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh (2019)

One of my friends is studying at Punjab Engineering College and people treat PEC students pretty decently.

Here is the list of positive experiences each student of PEC may experience.

  1. If you are interning in companies, then it is possible that company staff may praise and appreciate you for studying at Punjab Engineering College.
  2. If others come to know that you are studying at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, then they will become super happy.
  3. Even the cab driver asks my friend technical questions and tells him how hard it is to get PEC.
  4. Locals know the reputation of PEC that it held a year ago. However, the college is not as good as once it was. But still, the reputation of the college is still known by everyone in the region.
  5. Even Civil Servants praised PEC students for studying there.
  6. If you are taking admission into coaching institutions, then PEC students get a special discount.
  7. Students of other colleges are always curious about PEC fests.

But PECians also face negative experiences. Such as IIT students have never heard about PEC or its fests.

Therefore, if you are studying at Punjab Engineering College. Chandigarh, then you will encounter many such incidents. People will praise and treat you differently if you are from PEC.
