Is biotechnology at IIT Madras a good course? Does it have better placements in India?

Satyam Purwar Posted On : February 5th, 2024

Biotechnology is rooted in Biology, not Mathematics or Analytics. If you are even remotely interested in Biology, you’ll easily understand the courses. Else, you’ll struggle in this branch. Biotech has a lot of opportunities in research.

IIT Madras Biotech will give you some industry exposure too. You’ll get equal opportunities as other branch students for non core sectors (finance, economics, consulting, analytics, management, coding, etc.). But the opportunities are very limited for core jobs.

What are some career options after completing studies in biotechnology?

MT
Manas Taneja Posted On : February 17th, 2021
M.Sc Biotechnology, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar (2019)

While you will wonder about the various career options in biotechnology, the first image that pops up is about people in a lab coat. While it addresses one basic biotechnology profession, lab work isn't the lone alternative here. The biotech industry for people searching for jobs is a major economic driver, generating greater GDP.

Here are a few relevant options:

Post-graduation in Biotechnology:

  • Pursuing post-graduation in biotechnology will not just lead your knowledge on the right way, but also prompt job opportunities in both the private and government sectors.
  • You can opt to apply for exams or enroll in universities for higher-educations in renowned places like Germany, or any other well-recognized university in foreign.

Working under a scientist:

  • You can also work as an assistant researcher under a scientist if you are in any way planning to discontinue your studies.
  • It will provide an important experience certificate, irrespective of the minimum wage, that will help in the long run.

Private sector jobs:

  • Biotechnology has no limit in industry sectors, which is to say if a graduate applies for jobs in this position can earn a profitable amount.
  • Few of the abundant recruiters consist of the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors, cosmetic industries, companies invested in agricultural or biological products, and more.

Laboratory Technician/Assistant

  • You can opt to work as a laboratory assistant/technician as there are both private and government sectors that are in constant requirement of lab managers.
  • Regardless of the low pay scale, this can gain an individual a lot of practicality and knowledge.

Entrepreneurship

  • Establishing your own company to design different drugs, creating RNA Therapies is in itself prosperity.
  • If you have unique ideas, you can get financed by the Indian government and can begin your Biotech organization.

Government sector jobs

  • There are various opportunities for the graduates to make their career in government sectors as well.
  • In Germany, Biotech developments are monitored under the Department of Biotechnology. Vacancies for various posts are always expected.

Teacher in an Organization/University

If you get graduated in biotechnology, teaching can also be a career option. For being a lecturer in college, you must have a master’s degree or Ph.D.

The field is open for you to choose anything you want, but to get the best, you need to be the best. So, study well, groom your skills and your personality, and make a good career in biotechnology.

How is biotechnology engineering in NIT Warangal?

Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : August 19th, 2023

NIT Warangal is an excellent place for your graduate studies. It is a renowned NIT that offers great exposure and ample opportunities.

The Biotechnology curriculum is designed in a manner that students from a nonbiology background can easily understand it. Moreover, topics like Fluid Mechanics & Heat Transfer, Mass Transfer, Industrial Management, etc. do not have any Biology related terms. Other topics in Biotechnology are Cell Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Bio-nanotechnology, etc. The topics are theoretical but you will grow familiar with the concepts within them.

As for the Biotechnology Department at NIT Warangal, it has decent labs. The course curriculum for Biotechnology is well structured at NITW. For a career in Biotechnology, the NITW faculty provides ample support and guidance for projects, internships, exchange programs, etc. If you want a decent career in Biotechnology, it is highly recommended to complete your Masters.

In case you do not have an interest in Biotechnology, like the majority of Biotech students, you can sit for campus placements at NIT Warangal. Certain companies like IBM, Infosys, TCS, Capgemini, MuSigma, EXL Services, Futures First, UHG, Verity Solutions, FIITJEE, Akash, etc. recruit students from all Engineering branches.

Thus, a Biotechnology degree from NIT Warangal is a great choice. Make the most of your time over there and based on your interest, choose the right career path for yourself.

How is the placement of biotech in NIT Durgapur?

RS
Raghav Saini Posted On : September 7th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology Durgapur (2022)

As an alumni of Biotech at NIT Durgapur, I will tell you about the placement scenario of this course.

Only 20-30% Biotech students are placed, mostly through Mass hirings. Usually the salary ranges from 3-4 LPA. Those who are able to grab IT jobs are offered around 5-6 LPA. These are hardly 4-6 students from an entire batch. Top IT and consulting companies visiting the campus do not allow Biotech students to sit for placements. Also, core companies do not visit the campus for placements.

Do not join Biotechnology at NIT Durgapur if you seek placements. But for higher studies, you can join this department. Students from Biotech get admissions into renowned Indian and foreign universities for higher education.

With no specific area of interest, the best option for you is IIT Delhi Biotechnology. Here are a few points to support my opinion

  • Old IITs have the benefit of equal opportunities for all students irrespective of their branch.
  • You are eligible for placements in all types of companies including software.
  • As a biotechnology student, you get to do internships in various sectors like IT, finance, etc.
  • Exceptionally good grades can fetch you good packages
  • The quality of college life is better ij IIT Delhi than in Kanpur.

IIT Delhi is the dream college of many owing to the excellent brand name and opportunities it offers. Trust me, once you are inside your branch will hardly matter.

How is biotechnology at NIT Rourkela?

PJ
Prateek Jha Posted On : August 14th, 2023
NIT Rourkela (2016)

One of my friends recently completed Biotechnology at NIT Rourkela and shared his experience of the same.

  • The Department of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering is relatively new so you shouldn’t expect very high packages like other branches.
  • Companies like TCS, IBM, Infosys, and a few analytics companies make offers to students of this branch but the selection process is very challenging.
  • The curriculum of this branch is not at par with industry standards and is a major reason for poor demand. This limits the opportunities for the students to a great extent.
  • The professors are very rigid and adopt a very tough grading system. They don’t motivate you to try any creative stuff and only force you to mug up the theoretical concepts.
  • The professors are underqualified and some even lack a Bachelor's degree from top colleges like NITs, IITs, or other universities

Overall, the branch should be considered unless you are specifically inclined towards it and have no expectations of high packages.

How are the placements for a biotech in NSIT?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : August 24th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

BioTech at NSUT Delhi is a unique branch of the institute in the sense that its syllabus is completely different from other branches except for the first year. While other branches have a few overlapping courses, BioTech has none. BioTech students have separate labs, subjects, practicals, etc. Here are some highlights of this branch.

  • Few are interested in core jobs while some are coding enthusiasts who don’t get many opportunities in on-campus placements but perform well in off-campus placements.
  •  The students of this branch are actively involved in societies and clubs, ranging from DebSoc to Ashwamedha, Crescendo, and Mirage among others.
  • BioTech students usually are passionate about research work. They work under the faculty and publish some really good research papers throughout their college life.
  • Students with good grades have an edge in nontech jobs, society PORs, and even in higher education like MBA/IAS, etc.
  • The most common choice of these students is to pursue a Master's or an MBA. Some secure core or nontech jobs as per their skills.

Overall the placements for the BioTech branch of NSUT Delhi are average with a mix of core and nin core opportunities.

Should I take the biotechnology branch in NIT Raipur?

AM
Arpit Mukherjee Posted On : September 9th, 2023
Studied at National Institute of Technology, Raipur

I am an alumnus of Biotechnology at NIT Raipur. Initially, I entered this program because of the NIT tag of this institution. But with time, I developed a keen interest in this branch.

Here are some highlights of Biotech at NIT Raipur-

  1. Biotech is a great branch that demands hard work and dedication.
  2. With the increase in interdisciplinary projects, Biotechnology contributes to other fields as well, like Electronics, Computer Science, Mechanics, etc. These projects are innovative and interesting.
  3. The college library is good and contains an ample number of relevant books on Biotechnology.
  4. The faculty is very supportive, approachable and helpful. Not only will they help you in academics, but you can also ask them for their guidance in any projects or research work.
  5. In case of doubts and for better learning, you check out NPTEL, Coursera, and Khan Academy.
  6. If you lose an interest in this field, you can eventually go for an MBA.
  7. A B.Tech in Biotechnology might not fetch you a satisfactory job. You’ll most probably go for a Master’s later on.
  8. The field covers a broad range of topics. After understanding all the disciplines covered in this branch, you can ultimately choose your research area.

Research a bit about the syllabus and scope of this branch. If you feel comfortable studying it, you can definitely choose NIT Raipur for your studies.

Is a B.Tech in biotechnology a good option at the Manipal Institute of Technology?

AG
Alka Gupta Posted On : September 8th, 2023
Studied at Manipal Institute Of Technology

B.Tech in Biotechnology offers a mixed curriculum covering areas of science, technology, and engineering. It also focuses on research. The Manipal brand may add to your profile but it depends on your interests. There are a plethora of opportunities in Industrial biotechnology & biochemical engineering whereas life science-oriented fields need more time. For more opportunities in that field, you will have to pursue a Masters.

MIR Manipal is a decent option for BTech in Biotechnology. The batch size is small and the faculties are great. Students get one-to-one attention from professors which is very crucial for an R&D-oriented stream. Professors have a lot of ongoing projects so you will learn a lot here.

Students are provided with internships, placements, and pre-placement offers (PPO) in core companies and ITES. Some of the core companies that recruit Biotechnology students of MIT Manipal are Nicholas Piramal Ltd., Philips HealthCare, Biocon, Syngene, Dr. Reddys, GlaxoSmithKline Asia Pvt Ltd, Molecular Connections Pvt Ltd, Wipro Wellness Care, Solara Active Pharma, Elexes Medical and Hyde Engineering. Other companies such as IBM, TCS, Accenture, Infosys, Wipro, PricewaterhouseCoopers, UST Global, Tolaram Group, Gen Works, The Math Company, and Think & Learn visit campus placements regularly.
