About NIT Raipur
NIT Raipur is a public technical and research university in Raipur, India. It was founded in 1956. Engineering, technology, basic sciences, humanities, and social sciences are all available at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels at NIT Raipur. The National Institutes of Technology Act of 2007 grants funding to it and designates it as an Institute of National Importance.

NIT Raipur Admission
Admission to 41 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs at NIT Raipur is done through national entrance exams. NIT Raipur is housed in a stunning edifice that is well-organized and represents the grandeur of the institution. The institute is located on NH-6, the Great Eastern Road, 5 km from Raipur's train station and 14 km from the airport. The scholarship is only offered to the students pursuing any of the NIT Raipur professional degree courses after cracking the national level entrance examinations. If you are primarily looking for fields like singing, dancing, or literature, clubs like Raaga, Nrityam, and Literati will be your default choices. Also, always keep in mind that the club management certificates you get in your senior years will always be useful in the future.
Now, here are some parameters you can consider before planning on joining any of the clubs at NIT Raipur:
- Learning/Passion: You should figure out what plan to gain from joining a particular club, how it will help you achieve your future goals. Additionally, do you feel good after joining the club? It should be able to help you gain confidence, build your abilities, hone them and also bring them out. If you are looking to be a journalist in the future, PMRC will be good for you. If you are looking at sports, you can go to Shaurya.
- Diversity: Make sure that the club you join is not biased towards a single department. This happened with the Innovation cell that includes mainly students from biomedical sciences who do not contribute at all to the point of the club. Some other clubs are dominated by CS/IT/EC/MME students which will not help your cause at all. Make sure that there is diversity in the club you join.
- Time Value: A few clubs like Technocracy, Samskruti, and E-Cell mainly focus on labor during fests. If you are a first-year student, they will exploit your eagerness to do things. While working during the fest is Technocracy and Samskruti’s job, E-cell was more about entrepreneurship. In other words, don’t work for a club till your interest are satisfied because some clubs will make you volunteer for them and won’t let you join till your second year.
In my opinion, some of the best clubs are NCC, NSS, PMRC, and Raaga. I-Cell, E-Cell, and Nrityam are not that great.

If you have come across the news of the newly constructed for NIT Raipur, don’t bother as this news is nothing but a hoax.
According to the recent Vision 2020 that has been posted on the NIT Raipur website:-
Approximately 200 acres of land have been allocated for NIT Raipur in Rakhi Bharenga village. Therefore, a new campus was going to be built consisting of academic and residential blocks. The campus was going to have a planned layout with all modern amenities and laboratories which can cater to the need for the next 50 years.
The new campus would have had the following minimum infrastructure:-
- Separate hostel for boys & girls with a capacity of 2400 and 1600 respectively and 336 servant quarters.
- 370 quarters for non-teaching/supporting staff.
- Auditorium with a capacity of 1000 people.
- Central library with global data bank.
- The student activity center has a multipurpose hall, reading room, indoor and outdoor game facility with swimming pool and gym, music room, etc.
- High-speed Internet connectivity within the campus and Hostel.
- Uninterrupted power supply.
- Food courts with 24 x 7 services.
- Community center consisting of a shopping complex, bank, post office, ATM booth, public parks, etc.
Also, a student activity center was planned to cater to the needs of increasing student strength. A counseling center has been introduced to help students combat stress and depression and motivate them in their careers.
However, the construction of the new campus for NIT Raipur has been canceled/stopped now because they haven’t cleared the Environment Clearance so the money is now being used to renovate the existing campus. The hoax of the new campus has defamed NIT Raipur exceeding and also affected the rating of the Institute.
How is NIT Raipur different from other NIT's?
NIT Raipur offers certain unique advantages that make it different from the other NITs. These are-
- An International Hockey stadium is located in front of it.
- An International Swimming pool is located adjacent to it.
- An exclusive local railway station is located at its back.
- AIIMS is located less than 1 kilometer away from the campus.
- If you like to watch movies during your free time, GLITZ Cinemas is located just 200 meters away from the campus.
- This college has been in existence since 1956, so it has a really strong alumni network.
- NIT Raipur runs 12 UG programs (B.Tech and B.Arch). It has Biomedical Engineering which isn’t found in every other college.
Though NIT Raipur isn’t a top engineering college, it is growing and developing constantly.
Is NIT Raipur good for CSE? What are the packages offered by companies in CSE? Would I get a seat in NIT Raipur's general state quota?
NIT Raipur is a decent college which is developing each year in terms of infrastructure, crowd- quality, etc.
It hasn’t disclosed the recent branch-wise packages offered to its students. However, for all the courses combined, the average package stood at INR 10.1 LPA last year.
These are some companies that visit the NIT Raipur campus for recruitment- Infoedge, Siemens, Adobe, Barclays, Capgemini, FIAT, Reliance, TATA, SapientNitro, Oracle, Amazon, Samsung, JP Morgan Chase, Cognizant and Wipro.
NIT Raipur CSE closing rank 2023 (round 6) was 22,413 (open category, home state, gender-neutral seat). However, for female-only seats, it was 30,019. Based on this information, you can figure out the requirements for getting a seat in CSE at NIT Raipur. You can check the ranks in more detail on the JoSAA website. Prepare for your JEE Mains accordingly.
NIT Raipur is a decent choice for a CSE. You can definitely consider this college.
How is the infrastructure of NIT Raipur?
NIT Raipur has a well-planned infrastructure that is improving with time. Here are a few details on its campus-
- The main building is well-made, and the campus has multiple gates.
- The main gate has a very professional look.
- The campus has greenery all around. Near the college entrance, you’ll find two gardens.
- Just outside the campus, you’ll find the local railway station (Saraswati Nagar Railway Station).
- The college laboratories are well maintained.
- There are two grounds for sports and NCC. There is an indoor open badminton court, an outdoor basketball/volleyball court, and a gym room.
- The hotels have the necessary furniture, an indoor badminton court, and table tennis facilities.
- Some of the new classrooms have ACs and projectors.
- There is a common canteen for students and faculty.
- The campus has a dispensary as well.
These are some of the key features of NIT Raipur campus.
I am currently pursuing 1st year B.tech (CSE) in NIT Raipur. Can I give JEE Mains next year and take admission in another NIT or IIIT?
Yes, you can surely attempt your JEE Mains/Advanced/BITS. Many students do the same. There are (and have been) at least 1 or 2 such students in every batch of NIT Raipur.
But I would advise you not to opt for just any other NIT. Choose an NIT which is at least 5-6 ranks above NIT Raipur. Otherwise, switching to another NIT will prove ineffective. The same goes for IIITs, choose only the old ones.
This is because NIT Raipur offers decent placements for CSE, at par with the NITs of the same stature. So wasting a year for NIT Jamshedpur or NIT Durgapur will be fruitless. If you go for JEE counseling, you’ll have to withdraw from your NIT Raipur seat first. To be on the safe side, go for the counseling only with a score high enough to get you CSE in a better ranking NIT. Otherwise, you might get NIT Raipur once again. This has happened with students in the past.

What is the conversion system from a CGPA to an NIT Raipur percentage?
The institute released an official statement stating that the academic performance of students will be evaluated through CPI/SPI based on a 10-point scale. The CPI will be multiplied by a factor of 10 to obtain a numerical percentage for calculation.
So, the conversion system from a CGPA to an NIT Raipur percentage is *10.
For instance, your CGPA is 7.2. Then your Percentage will be 7.2 *10+72%
How is NIT Raipur for MCA?
I studied MCA at NIT Raipur, and completed my degree a few years back. Here are some pros and cons of joining this stream at NIT Raipur-
Pros-
- You’ll get an NIT tag.
- You’ll be offered a decent package, given that you stand eligible for the placements.
Cons-
- The faculty for MCA is underqualified. The teachers don’t solve the students’ doubts properly. If argued with, they might reduce your marks in the examinations.
- You can’t choose your elective paper in the 5th semester.
- The HOD and other faculty members aren’t cooperative or supportive towards their students.
- Although you’ll sit for placements with CS and IT engineering students, many companies don’t allow MCA students to apply. However, the same companies do pick MCA students from some of the other NITs.
- Sometimes when well-known brands visit the campus with placement offers, many MCA students are already busy with their internships.
- You’ll have to score 60% and above throughout your academic career. Failing to do so means you’ll most probably not be placed.
- Even if you stand eligible for placements, getting placed is still a challenge.
- The fee is higher in comparison to the educational and hostel facilities provided by this college for MCA students.
- B.Tech students are always prioritized and kept above MCA students, which is a bit unfair.
Thus, NIT Raipur isn’t the best place to pursue your MCA degree from.
I am getting mining engineering in nit raipur. Should I take it or drop a year?
Mining, Metallurgy and Mechanical are the oldest and best branches at NIT Raipur.
I can understand how motivated you feel right now. At this phase of your life, you must be confident that a year’s preparation will land you in a better place. Surely, this can happen with dedication and hardwork. However, many students fall into depression and anxiety a few months after taking a drop year. This affects their performance which can lead to lower scores in the second attempt.
I suggest you take admission into the Mining branch of NIT Raipur and prepare for your JEE Mains side by side. This will require time management and discipline from your side. But you’ll always have your ongoing degree to fall back to, in case things don’t work out. Rest assured that the Mining branch at NIT Raipur is a good option.
How is mining engineering at NIT Raipur? Is it worth joining?
I am a student of Mining at NIT Raipur. Based on my experiences, I will share some pros and cons of this branch at my college-
Cons-
- The curriculum is outdated.
- The faculty for mining isn’t good, barring very few teachers. You’ll have to rely solely on self study. Also, textbooks aren’t available for most subjects, so you’ll have to study from the ppts/pdfs provided by teachers.
- Campus placement is very low in core jobs.
- The college has poor infrastructure. It has poor sports facilities, and limited accommodation in hostels and the college auditorium.
- Most mining students don’t have any interest in their branch. Their aim is to crack the CAT/UPSC exam.
Pros-
- Getting up to 40-50% marks in end semester exams isn’t really difficult. It can be achieved by studying for just 2 days before each exam.
- You’ll get ample time to participate in college fest, and to explore your interests.
B.Tech Mining Engineering from NIT Raipur is the right choice if you wish to graduate with minimal efforts. Otherwise, I won’t suggest this branch at my college.
