A friend of mine got CSE at IIT Bombay with a rank of 10k. How is it justified?

Ashok TakLived in India

The IITs are funded by the Government so it has complete authority to give admission to anyone. The teachers or the students are not the stakeholders in the case of IITs. It is the Government that pays the teachers' salaries and installs the various facilities. The Government is at complete freedom to decide who can come into ITs and who needs a push in the form of the reservation to join ITs.

The aspirants know beforehand that the Government has set such rules according to its own discretion. No one is forced to give the exam and you can always choose any other option if you think it’s unfair.

Aspirants know that there might be cases where a candidate with 10k or above rank will get admission in contrast to the general cutoff. They still fill out firms in hope of clearing the exam. You are precisely giving a Government Exam and need to follow all the necessary rules. So it indeed is justified if someone with a 10k rank is able to make it into IIT Bombay.

IIT Madras Vs IIT Bombay: Which campus is more beautiful?

Anirban Dasguptastudied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

IIT Madras has a beautiful campus. If you are an animal lover, you will love it. Blackbuck runs around the campus like stray dogs. Monkeys can enter your hostel rooms anytime, and rob you. It’s also pretty normal to see Hyenas roaming around the campus at night.

IIT Madras campus used to be a part of Guindy National Park. Different departments are literally scattered around the jungle. The campus has many overhead tanks. You can sneak out at night with your friends and watch Chennai city from the top of these tanks (though it is against the rules).

Elliot beach is only 4 km away from the campus. You can take your bicycle out to watch the beautiful sunrise from the Bay of Bengal.

How should one choose between IIT-Madras and IIT-Bombay?

Harleen SethiStudied at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM)

When it comes to selecting an IIT for your M.Tech program, it's important to keep in mind that there is no significant difference between the various IITs in terms of academics. While some individuals may adjust more quickly to the IIT culture, every M.Tech program is held to the same academic standards, regardless of which IIT you choose. Whether you're pursuing CSE, a CS M.Tech program is nearly as valuable as a CS B.Tech/Dual program in terms of job placement, regardless of the IIT you attend.

With this in mind, it may make sense for you to consider IIT Madras, particularly if it meets your criteria. While IIT Bombay may have a strong reputation, it's important to keep in mind that all IITs are of similar quality. As a CS postgraduate, the specific IIT you attend is not likely to make a significant difference in your career prospects. Instead, focus on finding a program that aligns with your academic goals and personal preferences.

Ultimately, the decision of which IIT to attend is a personal one and should be based on a variety of factors, such as program offerings, location, and student life. Don't feel pressured to choose a specific IIT just because it has a reputation for excellence. Instead, consider all your options carefully and select the program that is the best fit for you. With hard work and dedication, you can achieve success in any M.Tech program, regardless of the IIT you attend.

In fact, its campus excellency is what made it the shoot location of the Bollywood movie 2 States. It stands better even when compared to one of the best technological institutes IIT Bombay. How can we get internships at IIT Bombay?

Sandip Pal
Hamza ShabirM.Tech in Electronic Systems, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB) (Graduated 2014)

If you are a B.Tech 3rd-year student (or even in 2nd year) and you want to apply for an internship at IIT Bombay, the best way to do it is by contacting the professor. You need to follow certain steps to apply for the internship:

  • Identify the area you want to work on. Make sure you have a good interest in the area, good knowledge of what is currently happening in your area of interest, a good grade in the subject, and a decent CGPA (or percent marks).
  • Go through the website of IITB and the corresponding department. The website lists details of all the professors, their contact and the area of research. Identify the professor who is doing work in your area of interest.
  • Prepare a good resume highlighting what you have achieved in the area you want to work on. If you are in the early or middle years of B.Tech you might not have too much to highlight on. In those cases, you can mention the good grades you got in the subject you want to work on. Even a seminar or presentation that you have taken related to the area will be a plus.
  • Draft and send a mail to the professor. The mail should be catchy, crisp, and to the point. Don’t write too many and don’t write too less. Highlight what you want to do, why you want to do and what have you done so far. Attach your resume also. The professor may not reply to you for the first time. You can send a reminder mail maybe a week later. Even after sending a couple of emails if there is no reply, try calling. (Be careful here. Some professors don’t like directly calling them. You can call some of his students doing research under him and inquire. Normally his student details will also be on the website).
  • Once you come under the notice of the professor, he might or might not have a phone interview and ask you to come as an intern depending on your performance.
  • You need to get the consent of your college to do the internship at IITB. You can ask the professor about the formalities for it.

Though it seems simple to read, it will take a considerable amount of time, particularly finding a good professor. So, if you want to do an internship six months from now, you should start as soon as possible. You can always take the help of the faculties in your current B.Tech college. If there is any faculty who has direct contact with any of the professors in IITB, that will be the best way.

You can bypass all the above steps by getting a recommendation from the faculty. If you successfully complete an internship, it will make the professor happy, and he might be willing to give a recommendation letter, which is very valuable for your higher studies.

Will it be a good decision to choose NMIMS, NITIE, JBIMS or IIT Mumbai for an MBA?

Vivek AgarwalPGDM from T. A. Pai Management Institute (2019)

No doubt all the institutes you mentioned are excellent in their respective standards and fields. But the primary element that should be stressed before choosing a college is what kind of MBA you are looking for. You should determine the specialization you are willing to go for, the kind of curriculum and crowd you are expecting, and various other factors.

You need to keep in mind that an MBA degree will pose just as a stepping stone to success and cannot guarantee your success. The ultimate determining factor is the level of knowledge you gain and how you perform throughout.

All the Institutes you mentioned are top-notch and are globally recognized knowledge hubs. You cannot make a choice just on the basis of your preference. You will have to work tremendously hard to make it into these esteemed institutes.
