IIT Madras hostel facilities are the same for students of all degree programs. M.Tech, MS, or Ph.D. students don’t get any different facilities.
The hostels have a sports room with carom, TT, etc. Badminton court and other sports facilities are also available inside the hostel premises.
If you are planning to pursue your higher studies at IIT Madras, you can expect a great hostel life experience. Here are some of the excellent facilities:
The lush green cover of the campus is one of the highlights of IIT Madras. It boasts of having one of the best infrastructures which is a mix of traditional and modern elements. The classrooms and labs are quite cozy and modern, except for a few which are non-AC. You will be taught the latest teaching methodology and techniques. IIT Madras has also been known for its good hostels. All the hostels of IIT Madras boast of a badminton court, volleyball court, football grounds, and also large sitting spaces. Below are the best hostels considered on the campus of IIT Madras
Hope this helps.
Earlier it was slightly difficult to secure a hostel room in 1st semester but with the establishment of a new hostel, this process has been alleviated. There are higher chances of acquiring a single room second semester onwards.
FEE DETAILS | AMOUNT IN INR |
Hostel Deposit (NS)-(Refundable) | 3000 |
Advance Dining Charges | 17500 |

Student Wellness fee | 200 |
A number of first-year students in M.Tech have had the privilege of possessing the entire room to themselves. Precisely, students are given this facility from the beginning of their semester.
According to my brother’s personal experience, the hostel life for MTech students in IIT Madras is quite cheerful and this is the place where they build memories for life.
Thus, it is suggested that you enjoy every bit of your hostel life to the fullest so that the memories that you build here remain worth cherishing for your lifetime.
Post Graduate (PG) students including those pursuing MS/M.Tech generally stays in the following hostels - Brahmaputra; Pampa; Mahanadi; Tambi; Sindhu; Krishna; Cauvery; Sarayu (Girls); and Sabarmati (Girls)
Krishna and Cauvery have mostly research scholars. They also have their own mess. Others can select any one of the 6 different caterers of the Himalaya mess. On average, they have 1 food court, 3 South Indians, 1 North Indian, and 1 girl's mess. Girls are allowed to dine with the boys but not vice-versa. There are also many vending machines in some hostels to sell snacks and cold drinks.
The campus also has a restaurant, Zaitoon, which offers both North Indian as well as South Indian food in both veg and non-veg forms. They also offer online ordering and room delivery services. Other than that IRCTC canteen offers you food 24/7. You may even venture outside.
One of my friends at IIT Madras stayed in the hostel. So I might be able to give you some information about it. Here is the stuff he shared with me.
There are a number of rules and regulations to be followed but the bottom line is that the students could not care any less. They precisely live by not being troublesome to others in the hostel and having the freedom to create their own fun college life.
Loud music, smoking and drinking within the hostel premises are prohibited but if you find a neighbour who does not care about it then the problem is solved.
