Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Civil Engineering is an undergraduate engineering degree of four year duration. 10+2 pass students with science subjects are eligible to take admission in this course. Admission in most of the colleges offering Civil Engineering is done though any of the entrance tests conducted at national and state level.
Average tuition fee for this course ranges between INR 2 to 4 lacs in most of the public institutes and 3 to 6 lakhs in private colleges. However there are some government colleges which offer this course at very less tuition fee.
Civil Engineering is not that much popular course of choice due to the software and electronics boom of the past two decades, which has pushed this field into the sidelines. But, with India’s growing economy and lagging infrastructure, it is becoming increasingly evident that India needs skilled, qualified and bright civil engineers like never before. Civil engineer can get placed in various public and private sector industries with a healthy remuneration. Average entry level salary package for a Civil engineer in his core job sector may range between INR 3 to 5 lacs per annum.

Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines in the world. Civil engineering, until a few decades back, was a much sought after course among Indian students, but lately has been sidelined due to the software and IT boom. However with the increasing need to develop and maintain India’s infrastructure, which is lagging in all aspects, this field is bouncing back strongly.
There are options for higher studies after the completion of B.Tech. course. Students can pursue Master’s degree in specialized course. Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in Civil engineering and other allied branches like-
It is the best option to get specialized in this course. Students can take GATE for taking admission in this course offered by many top engineering colleges in India. Ph.D. is another option for higher studies. Students can also opt for MBA course, which will take them to the managerial level in their career which is most promising career option nowadays.

10+2 with PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) is the basic requirement to take admission in B.Tech Civil Engineering program. Percentage required in qualifying exam is 50% for most of the engineering institutes. However required percentage criteria depend on college.
Diploma holders in the mechanical or allied stream are also eligible to take admission, in the second year of the course. They must have done their diploma after10th. In some cases candidates having bachelor degree in science are also eligible.
Following are the two general ways for admissions in undergraduate engineering courses in India -
Direct Admission- Engineering institutes which offer direct admission have certain criteria for admission. Either they offer admission on the basis of merit in qualifying exam i.e. 10+2 or equivalent or there are some management seats reserved in private engineering colleges. For management quota the fee structure is generally higher than others.
Direct Admission for Diploma holders- Various engineering colleges in India also offer direct admission to ITI diploma holders in second year of the course.
Entrance Exams- There are several entrance exams in India at national and state level among them JEE Main is the most sought after engineering entrance test. Some private institutes like SRM University, BITS Pilani, VIT University etc conduct their separate entrance test. Some main national level and state level engineering entrance tests are below-

The course structure is designed in such a way, that students learn theoretical and practical knowledge of different fields that are covered in the study of civil engineering.
Course work includes classroom lectures, practical, industry visit and summer internship.
In most of the engineering institutes, first year of every branch has common subjects. Second year onwards the specialization starts. Thus the first year courses are similar for everyone. Before you decide to pursue your undergraduate studies in this field, it is important to understand that Civil engineering is not just about buildings and bridges. If you are under the assumption that all that civil engineers do is wear a yellow helmet and supervise workers in construction sites, then you are yet to understand the true capacity of this field. Read on to discover what this field is all about and the scope of civil engineering in terms of education, jobs and career.
Presently, unlike IT and Software field, civil engineering industry does not have a large numbers of job openings.
In these cases, you will have to hunt for a core engineering job all by yourself through off-campus placements. Creating strong professional networks, developing a great resume with stellar GPA and doing impressive projects and internships will help you secure a job in one of the core civil engineering companies.
Also, civil engineers find work not just in construction industry, but also in other industries such as oil and energy, transportation, petroleum, environmental, power and electric utilities, chemical etc where infrastructure projects and construction facilities are involved. Some students transition to software, consulting or banking as they feel that salary and growth prospects are better in these sectors.
Following are a list of companies from different sectors that hire civil engineering students.
This depends on the nature of the work, students’ academic profile and reputation of the universities. Students from universities such as the IITs get paid better. Also, private companies pay higher than government. Average pay is Rs. 15000 per month for a fresh civil engineering graduate and the salary gets higher based on the above mentioned factors.
Following graph shows salary trend for Civil engineers according to their job profile-
Also, most prestigious core companies prefer to hire students from premier institutions such as the IITs, BITs , DU etc. Other lesser known engineering colleges place only a handful (in some cases none) of civil engineering students in core companies while the rest end up in the IT industry. So getting a good reputed institute should be the main objective of aspirants. Companies hire engineers from a reputed college at a very good package.
Following is the top companies’ wise placement trend for civil engineers-
