We train scientists to analyze big data and multisource datasets to solve these grand challenges, by bringing together the talents of faculty across several departments including the Departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Math, Physics, and Chemistry.

The human genome has been mapped, tornadoes are being predicted with greater accuracy, complex situations are being used to design and test cars, planes and space vehicles before fabrication ? all of these innovations are made possible by revolutions in science and engineering driven by the use of big data and computation.

Decoding the human genome. Modeling natural phenomenon. Evaluating the impact of major disasters. All involve computational manipulation of large datasets. Analyzing "big data" has become vital across virtually all areas of science and engineering and we are focused on supporting research that explains the science of these complex systems.
