During the second and subsequent years, the major emphasis is on research. Ph.D. students typically advance to candidacy by the end of the second year of study. Opportunities for professional and career development are structured throughout the candidacy period.
All research is carried out under the direct supervision of a faculty adviser who serves as the student's preceptor. Many research groups are enriched by the presence of undergraduate researchers, postdoctoral researchers, research scientists, and visiting professors.
Graduate curricula leading to the Ph.D. in Chemistry are offered in the following areas:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Chemical Biology/Biochemistry
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
- Physical Chemistry (including Theoretical Chemistry)
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Requirement:
- A bachelor degree of 4 years or combined BS/MS of 5 years from an accredited university or college
- Official transcripts of the previous education
- A minimum of 3.0 GPA on a scale of 4.0 in the last degree earned
- For students with GPA lower than 3.0, GRE exam score is required
- Statement of Intent
- Three letters of recommendation
- CV
English Language Requirements:
- TOEFL: 79 on IBT; 550 on PBT
- IELTS: 7.0
- MELAB: 82
