The following program of study meets the Department of Physics requirements and is suggested for students coming from a physics background or students wishing to earn additional physics hours while completing the optics courses.
The OPT (PH) degree program is thesis based and comprises a minimum of 27 hours of coursework plus a minimum of 6 hours of thesis research.
The OPT (PH) program meets the Department of Physics requirements and is suggested for students coming from a physics background or students wishing to earn additional physics hours while completing the optics courses.
The curriculum has been designed such that little or no prior graduate work in physics is required. The OPT degree program does not prepare the student for taking the Physics Comprehensive Exam or the OSE Preliminary Exam for entrance into either Ph.D. program.
Requirements for students seeking the OPT degree through the Electrical Engineering department, the OPT (EE), may be significantly different from those given here.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Requirements:
- Applicants must have a bachelors degree in science or engineering from an accredited university
- Submit official transcripts of all previous educational institution attended
- Official transcripts must be evaluated by an accredited agency like WES, SpanTran etc
- Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or equivalent
- Applicants must have a combined score of 300 on the verbal, quantitative and analytical sections and at least 3.0 in the writing section of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
- Submit three letters of reference
- Submit English Language Proficiency test scores
English Language Requirements:
- TOEFL: minimum 18 in each subscore in iBT; 8 in each subscore of Essentials
- IELTS: minimum 6.0 in each subscore
- PTE: minimum 54
- Duolingo: minimum 105
