Vancouver is an expensive but beautiful city to live in. Other parts of Canada are really cold which makes commuting and life difficult. UBC had the best ranking among the universities that I applied to, so I chose to pursue my studies there.

Course Curriculum

8

The course syllabus is updated each term. In my field which is philosophy, research is personal but you are given a chance to make your own classroom ( directed studies). They are two kinds of directed studies, in the first type which is called student-directed seminars you have to make a course syllabus based on the topic of your interest and find a faculty member that is willing to supervise the seminar. In the second type which is called directed reading, you design your own syllabus and work with a faculty member of your choice. The difference between these two is that when you are doing a seminar other students need to register for the course as well but when you are doing a directed reading you can work with a supervisor alone.

Faculty

8

it's from 1 to 12.UBC is determined in making a relationship between faculty and students. So, most instructors are approachable and they are required to be so. The best two faculties that I had were Dr. Michale Griffin and Dr. Anders Kraal

Placement

2

They are workshops about employment that would give one information about the job market. In the faculty of arts and department of philosophy, we don't have post- study placement opportunities.

Accommodation

7

I have lived both on-campus and off-campus. If one is a first-year international student university is required to give them a room in one of the first-year residences. Most rooms are single and you are required to buy a mandatory meal plan because there is no place to cook. I personally prefer on-campus housing because it's much cheaper than off-campus housing. On-campus housings are mostly furnished and wifi and utility are all included in the monthly fee when one lives on campus.

Exams

For the application, I had to submit a CV and a personal statement and I had to go through some online interviews and write a response to some questions. What matters the most in the CV, are the jobs that you have done especially volunteering in different philanthropic organizations. Personal statements consist of two parts a part where you have to write about yourself especially the things that cannot be projected in your grades such as who you really are and your passions. In the second part, you will be given some questions that intend to evaluate your problem-solving ability. During the online interview, you have to watch a video and record your own video while responding to those questions. I had to go through some short online interviews. Interviews are short and they give you 2 to 3 minutes to think about the questions. Try to give simple and concise answers, because you are not expected to come up with the best practical answer in two minutes.

Events

There is a mandatory program called Jumpstart for International students. First-year international students are required to go to Canada ten days before the beginning of the semester to build connections and learn about things like banking in Canada. They are many events happening on the campus and you will be notified about these events through your email. During imagine day, which is a day before the class day different student clubs are going to set up their booth on campus and you can take a walk around the campus and explore and join the clubs. They are 10 libraries on campus but two of them are the most famous ones: Irving K.Barber learning center and Koerner because they are open till late. There are two wifi available for students one is visitor wifi that anyone can connect to while they are on campus and the other one needs Student login information the can work better than the visitor wifi in most places.
