Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Ceramic Technology Colleges, Syllabus, Scope & Jobs
B. Tech in Ceramic Technology is comparatively a new and interesting course in the field of engineering courses, that deals with the detailed study, design, properties, manufacturing, designing, applications and uses of ceramic materials.
Ceramic Technology is a perfect blend of art and technology for those who are creative and intend to study the immaculate process of manufacturing objects from inorganic and non-metallic materials.
B. Tech Ceramic Technology is a full time four years long course divided into eight semesters. For those who are seeking admission in bachelor’s degree, it is mandatory to pass in Higher Secondary (10+2) examination with subjects Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The admission procedure is through an entrance test, which is conducted both at the national and the state level, similar to other engineering courses.
Students have the options of working with prestigious institutes like Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Defense Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), provided they fulfill the necessary job requirements. Research is also a viable option for pursuing further studies after completion of M. Tech followed by Ph.D. in Ceramic Technology especially in foreign countries.
Salary and remuneration vary from one’s expertise, experience, and the company. A graduate with the successful completion of the program can earn anywhere between 25,000 INR to 40,000 INR per month, however, it can go more than the specified range.

Eligibility For B. Tech. in Ceramic Engineering
To pursue a career in Ceramic Technology/Engineering, one must possess an engineering degree in the same. Colleges all over India offer graduation (B. Tech or B.E.) and post-graduation (M. Tech or M.E.) level courses. The minimum educational qualification to become eligible for pursuing the bachelor’s program is to pass Higher Secondary (10+2) level examination with subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) with a high percentage of marks. Generally, for admission in any B. Tech program, 50% is required in 10+2.
B. Tech. in Ceramic Engineering: Admission Process
Aspirants have to go through a rigorous process of clearing national and state level examinations for getting admission into various institutes. Candidates have to pass the national level entrance examinations such as
- Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE)
- All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE)
- National Institute of Technology (NIT)
However, some institutes conduct their own separate entrance tests for the admission procedures. In some cases, colleges provide direct admission on merit-based as per 10+2 qualifying exam. For private institutes offering courses, there are some seats reserved for management quota for which the fee structure is generally very high. This usually happens in the case of direct admission.

B. Tech. in Ceramic Engineering: Career Prospects
In respect to career prospects and scope, an undergraduate opens a plenty of options to pursue the field. Job opportunities have increased with this emerging branch both in public and private sector for a fresh out of college student. Generally, there are two types of subcategories for career options: Ceramic Technologists and Ceramic Designers. Technologists deal with the complex chemical process of producing materials while a designer’s job involves the creation of materials using sand, clay and basic ceramic materials.
Those who are interested in ceramic engineering field must have a knack for the technological process and possess a detailed knowledge of various principles involved with ceramic materials. They should have sound knowledge of analytics, technical skills and should be creative in case of pursuing a career in ceramic designing such as clay work, pottery or others.
Although a new field relatively, Ceramic Technology/Engineering offers a wide range of career options and job opportunities for the ones interested in understanding the mechanism of ceramics. The branch offers numerous jobs in various domains such as given below: -
- Medicine
- Mining
- Aerospace
- Food and Chemical Industry
- Electronics
- Industrial and Transmission Electricity
- Refinery and Guided Light Wave Transmission
A few more domains where a ceramic engineer can seek jobs are ceramic ware manufacturing units, research and testing firms, tableware and sanitary ware industry, cutting tools industry, kitchenware industry, and others. In addition to that, a ceramic engineer can also work with hospitals and research laboratories.
Once the engineers/technologists are trained and skilled, they can also step into entrepreneurship. For getting employment in public sector, ceramic engineering graduates or post-graduates have to undergo a difficult process of clearing examinations such as UPSC, PSC or SSC which can open the doors for them to work with esteemed organizations like ISRO, BARC, and other public sector organizations.
