B.Tech. Genetic Engineering: What is it About?
Genetic Engineering is the branch of advanced science, which is concerned with the wide range of scientific techniques that are applied in order to purposely change the genetic structure in the DNA code of a living life form so as to create newer and better beings.
Students enrolled too the course are taught advanced and efficient ways to develop organisms better suited to meet environmental challenges and the needs of modern medicine. A few examples of genetically engineered organisms currently in the market include plants with resistance to some insects, plants that can tolerate herbicides, and crops with modified oil content.
For admission to the course, candidates are required to qualify a relevant national/ State/ university level engineering entrance examination followed by rounds of counseling and personal interview.
Some of the major national- level entrance examinations conducted in India for admission to the course are JEE MAIN, JEE ADVANCE, SRMJEEE, VIT EEE, BIT-SAT, JNU EEE, etc. Other universities- level entrance exams are conducted by SRM University, Vellore Institute of Technology, Birla Institute of Technology and Jawaharlal Nehru University.
The score obtained in JEE MAIN is accepted in most universities including all NITs across the country, whereas JEE ADVANCE score is considered for admission to IITs.
Eligibility for B.Tech. in Genetic Engineering
For admission to B.Tech. Genetic Engineering course, the candidate is needed to have passed the Higher Secondary School Certificate (10+2) examination from a recognized Board of education with Biology, Physics and Chemistry as main subjects with a minimum aggregate score of 60%. Candidates having a Bachelor’s degree in Science or Molecular Biology are also eligible to apply.
