The study of economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen campus is intended to convey the ability to recognize economic problems and to critically assess economic concepts with regard to their contribution to solving these problems. Taking into account the requirements and changes in the professional world, the students should be enabled to contribute independently to solving such problems and to critically classify the scientific findings by applying the knowledge of economics and the methods of empirical economic research. The “Master of Science” course in economics is intended to prepare students for the professional fields that are typical for economics students.
Furthermore, the students should be enabled to act responsibly in a free, democratic, and social constitutional state. In addition, they should be able to acquire the methods that enable them to advance scientific knowledge.
The course is completed with a written thesis, the processing time of which is six months (master's thesis). This serves as an introduction to independent scientific research. After completing the master’s degree, there is the possibility of doing a doctorate. Active research in the economic field at the Essen campus is internationally recognized and is constantly incorporated into the courses. The students in particular benefit from this, as they are also involved in ongoing research projects.
