The objective of the six semesters program is to prepare students for a successful legal career in academia and international practice. By providing courses for academic research and additional skills the program will help students to gain an in-depth understanding of international law in general and their field of specialization in particular. The University of Göttingen and the Institute of International and European Law have a strong tradition in international law that dates back to 1737. Today, the Institute covers research in many fields of international law, such as general international law, human rights law, international economic and environmental law, European law, and international criminal law. The doctoral candidates will be fully integrated into the academic life of the Institute of International and European Law and will benefit from and contribute to the intellectual exchange there.

The semester fees comprise administration fees, student body fees, and a Student union fee. The summer semester fee totals $476.54 for 2021. While the Winter semester fee totals $470.43 for 2021. So the yearly fee for attending this program is $946.97.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- The requirement for acceptance on the doctoral degree program is that the applicants aim to complete a Ph.D. in the field of international law or foreign and comparative law and write their thesis in English.
- Admission to the doctoral degree program is conditional on the applicant has successfully completed a university degree. Graduates within the meaning of § 4(3) PromO can also meet entry requirements by providing evidence of a foreign Master's degree in Law as well as successful completion of a seminar paper or Master's thesis with the grade "excellent" or "good" ("fully satisfactory").
- Applicants whose native language is not English must provide evidence of satisfactory skills in English.
Indian Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Language requirements: Demonstration of sufficient English language skills by earning the minimum required grade on an internationally recognized test.
- As a rule, the last test must have been taken no more than two years prior to submission of the application for admission to this degree program (date received).
International students hailing from non-English speaking countries can prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.
