The aim of the doctoral program in Social Sciences at the Faculty of Social Sciences is to qualify the students for taking on responsible tasks in research and education and in non-university fields of occupation. A research-oriented, post-graduate course of education with a set curriculum enables students to master the modern theories and methods of the social sciences, to critically reflect upon them and apply them as well as to produce scientific knowledge. In addition, key qualifications are also conveyed.
The dissertation topic will be selected from a subject that is represented at the Faculty of Social Sciences: Ethnology, Gender Studies, Education, Political Science, Sociology, or Sports Science.
The joint object of research of the individual disciplines at the Faculty of Social Sciences is the social action of humans at a historically and socially definable location. Based on current social processes and problems the conditions for individual and collective actions are examined, their cultural, gender, and class-specific forms described, and its effects and consequences on macrosocial as well as microsocial level are examined.

The semester fees comprise administration fees, student body fees, and a Student union fee. The summer semester fee totals $476.54 for 2021. While the Winter semester fee totals $470.43 for 2021. So the yearly fee for attending this program is $946.97.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- Degree from a university program or at a comparable institute of higher education in a discipline represented at the Faculty of Social Sciences.
- The above-average completion of a program of study is documented by a Master's degree, a “Magister” or “Diplom” examination or a comparable academic degree with a grade of at least “good” (up to 2.5).
- Completed M.A. program with a standard period of study of one year (minimum total of 240 ECTS credits) or equivalent program in a subject area represented at the Faculty of Social Sciences or a related subject area.
- The relevance and validity of the previous studies must be substantiated by the following documents:
- Proof of examination achievements completed during the B.A. or M.A. program or an equivalent program amounting to at least 100 ECTS credits earned in the subject that the proposed doctoral thesis deals with, or
- Proof of examination achievements completed during the B.A. or M.A. program or an equivalent program amounting to at least 50 ECTS credits earned in the subject that the proposed doctoral thesis deals with, and proof of examination achievements completed during the B.A. or M.A. programme or an equivalent programme amounting to at least 50 ECTS credits earned in other subjects that can be selected for doctoral studies at the Göttingen Graduate School of Social Sciences (GGG) or the Graduate School of Humanities Göttingen (GSGG).
Indian Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Applicants who are neither in the possession of a German university entrance qualification nor of a B.A. or M.A. degree (or an equivalent degree) from a German university must possess sufficient knowledge of the German language (DSH 2 level).
- Persons with sufficient knowledge of the English language do not have to submit proof of their knowledge of German.
Applicants whose mother tongue is not English must prove their proficiency in English by meeting the minimum requirements in one of the internationally acknowledged tests like TOEFL/ IELTS or other equivalent test.
