Mr. Sanjeev Kumar Choudhary is the Assistant Professor of Law Gujarat National Law University. He has a tremendous experience in the field of legal education and emphasises on bringing more of experiential learning for the students. What is your philosophy of leadership? Would you describe your leadership style?

“A leader should effectively develop a sense of belonging in the institution”

Teaching has always been a profession of passion. Primarily, it started as a means to disseminate knowledge available to human beings to the next generation. But, it had witnessed tremendous modifications with the development in the social constructs and expectations. However, to my understanding, apart from knowledge, one crucial element which remains a significant factor throughout this profession is the element of faith and trust. Therefore, as a professor, I prefer to be honest, compassionate, and approachable to all my students. I believe this provides them an opportunity to develop the sense of belonging and develops confidence in communicating their concerns more openly. 


How do you strategize about the key programs and plans for the marketing and administration of your University? 

“Our aim is to achieve academic and professional excellence”

We are committed to achieving academic and professional excellence in the field of legal studies in the country. We have always worked for an all-round and inter-disciplinary academic excellence. To achieve academic excellence, we have a three-tier educational administrative system starting from the faculty, the Academic Curriculum Committee, and the Dean Academic Affairs’ supervised directly by the Director. Further, we are always supported by our efficient team of administrative staff in all our endeavors. Being an academic institution, we believe in ‘actions speak louder than words.’ Therefore, marketing has never been our motto. However, we are quite sensitive to our presence, footprint, and outreach at the national and international levels. GNLU is in academic collaboration with various overseas institutions located in different countries across continents. These collaborations offer global exposure and opportunity to our students, faculties, and alumni and serve as one of the means in expanding our outreach. 


How does the curriculum of Gujarat national law University ensure the best practice of industry?

“We work on various fronts to bring in multiple source of learning”

To ensure the industry's best practice gets incorporated into our curriculum, we work on multiple fronts. As far as possible, the curriculum for all courses offered to the students is designed in consultation with the expert from academia and industry. The same is evaluated internally by the Academic Curriculum Committee before being brought to the students. Apart from that, the faculty, in consultation with the students, invite the working professional from the industry to discuss the best practice. Further, almost a regular session of alumni is organized to acquaint the students with the intricacies involved in tangibly converting the class-room understanding and the hurdles faced in growing professionally.

Any insights into how your university could be more welcoming to students of different races or economic backgrounds?

“We ensure there are no hiatus caused in the academic front for the students”

Any institution's academic environment plays a vital role in growing the sense of inclusiveness in the younger generation. As an institution of repute, we are very much conscious of the importance of inclusiveness and its impact on society. Being a residential university, we ensure in both students' academic and personal sphere, a sense of collective and mutual existence should grow among them. 

There are various schemes available both at the academic front and financial front to take care of all students' concerns coming from different backgrounds. Many scholarships, educational support programs, and financial assistance post-study for professional development are already in place. Apart from internal support, we are also instrumental in assisting the deserving candidates in all external support. 


What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the University and the students are? 

“It is essential to nurture the students”

In this fast-growing technology-driven world, information is almost freely available. An ocean of information is made available to every individual on their fingertip. The only thing missing in this data source is the dynamic approach that we humans are accustomed to from our childhood. We, as a teacher, have to fill this gap. It is the students through whom the reputation of an institution and a faculty is established globally. Therefore, apart from academic excellence, the students' overall personality matters a lot in the long run. Thus, I believe my ultimate responsibility towards the Institution and students is to help students become good human beings and prepare them academically as proud prospective ambassadors of the Institution. 


What do you think should be the University’s top priority over the next 10 years?

“Teaching, Research, Extension & Training are the essential activities for any institution”

Teaching brings immediate satisfaction to the most critical stakeholders, i.e., students. Extension and training activities help connect with the outside world, industry people, and the professionals practicing in the practice space. Refined intellectual output in the form of research provides an opportunity to give back to society and stand by its expectation and make the institution stand tall in the global academic world. I believe we will continue our endeavor of continuous growth on these fronts maintaining the desired balance.

What would you like people to know about your university they may not know?

“We ensure that students are abreast to current industry standards”

In the era of information technology and the right to information, there is hardly anything essential and is not made available in the public domain. Still, there is something unique about this beautiful institution that is not available in the public domain as apparently as the other important information that counts in this professional world. When everyone and everything is evaluated and reciprocated only on the settled professional yardstick, we embrace the newcomers as a member of this ever-growing GNLU Family and maintain this bonding with an assurance of all possible support.


What do you see as Gujarat National Law University’s greatest strengths?

“Our faculty and students are the backbone of the institution”

Our faculty have spent precious years of their life in making Gujarat National Law University. They all lived their dream in this process of making. Gujarat National Law University is not just an institution but a collective wish, a collective dream and a collective passion of these people who realize it, live it and strive for it even today as passionately as they used to do yesterday.
