Dr. N Shanmugasundaram is an HOD of EEE department in the Vels Institute of Science Technology and Advanced Studies,Chennai,Tamil Nadu. N. Shanmugasundaram received his BE degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Anna University in 2002, ME degree in Power Electronics and Industrial Drives from Sathyabama University in 2005 and PhD degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department from Anna University Chennai Tamilnadu. He is working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Vels Institute of Science,Technology and Advanced Studies Chennai. His overall teaching experience is 20 years and Research areas expertise in Cables ,Power Systems. He also published more than 40+ research articles in reputed journals.

Bachelors of Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering Curriculum with industry-based courses are given to students. Some of these include embedded systems ,IOT,Industrial Drives.Ph.D-Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Research areas are Power Electronics ,Power system,Artificial Intelligence, etc.

What would you say are the best practices in the course you’re offering?

“Mini projects, value-added courses and other internships are given to students”

We offer value-added courses in collaboration with industries. Our campus provides compulsory internships for 3rd- year students. Mini Projects train the students before the project work in the 4 th year. Practical teaching in substations and manufacturing industries are also available to them.

“Internships and industrial training are the main priority in our programs for pupils”

Mandatory Industrial training given to students in every semester. They must do internships in 6 th semester to enhance their skills.

“Encourage interdisciplinary research, projects and other courses to students”

The Students are ensured to study some interdisciplinary courses. Also, we are motivated to do interbranch projects to get knowledge of other programs. You can’t sustain a pure electrical engineer. So, we are encouraged to do some interdisciplinary research as well.

How did you train faculty to deliver this program to the students?

“FDPs, NPTEL courses and more activities are given to faculties for program delivery”

Our faculty are equipped by attending the Faculty development program and NPTEL high level courses. It helps them to gain knowledge, publishing more and more research articles in international journals. 

How do you tend to build an industry connected with this program?

“Placement ,internships and projects build industrial relationships in our courses”

We have signed an MOU with 10+ industries and they provided value-added courses in collaboration with the industry. Placement ,internships and projects help our students through the industry.This will improve and create interest among students. They would come up with good creative thoughts which can be implemented in the future .

What are the types of projects that students are working on through this program?

“Embedded systems ,Artificial Intelligence ,Power systems,Power electronics and more are given to students”

Project types worked by students are Industrial and research-based projects. Most of the projects included in the field of electric vehicles, E-charging ,Embedded systems ,Artificial Intelligence ,Power systems,Power electronics, etc.
