What is a better option between IIM Ahmedabad and FMS Delhi given that I have no financial help from my parents?

PS
Prakhar Sahu Posted On : December 13th, 2022
MBA in Management, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (Graduated 2017)

Financially speaking, FMS Delhi is a better option. The fees are extremely low compared to most other B Schools. The low fees do not compromise the quality of education here. But the accommodation and other expenses are high in Delhi. So the best option is to get a hostel in DU. But if you are okay with below-average rooms then rooms are available near FMS in the Malka Ganj area. They cost around INR 4000-7000.

If you go for IIM Ahmedabad, the scholarships and student loans will help you a lot. They will cover your tuition and hostel fees and will have to just pay your personal expenses (10k-15k in PG). One won’t regret investing in IIM Ahmedabad in the long run. But the ultimate choice is yours.

What will be the advantage of joining IIM Calcutta over IIM Lucknow given the huge difference in fees between these two institutes i.e. 21 lacs vs. 14 lacs?

Definitely joining IIM Calcutta over IIM Lucknow is better. In fact the huge difference in fees is exactly the reason why IIM Calcutta is worth investing in more than IIM Lucknow.

Some advantages of joining IIM Calcutta over IIM Lucknow are:

  • IIM Calcutta is among the top 3 while IIM Lucknow is below.

  • The placement opportunities at IIM Calcutta are way better than IIM Lucknow. Check the recent placement reports to verify the same.

  • Professors with publications in International journals are way higher in IIM Calcutta than Lucknow.

  • IIM Calcutta has a better batch quality as it has a higher cut off on CAT %ile.

  • IIM C Alumni networking and culture is enviable even by IIM A and B. So by paying more fees you build relationships that are priceless and last a lifetime.

I wouldn’t say choosing IIM Calcutta over IIM Lucknow will ever be a bad decision. Your 7 extra lakhs Rupees will pay you back tenfold times.

Firstly it is a PPP (Public-Private Partnership) type of institution, so it is quite expensive and has a high fee structure. The fee structure depends on the academic year, but the hostel fees are around 30,000 per semester and increases accordingly.

The BTech fee structure for the academic year 2020-21 is as follows.

There is a 20% fee reduction in tuition fees for SC/ST students.

I hope it is helpful and you can also check the fee structure for your course on the official website.

If you have secured a seat at IET Lucknow, then you must have performed well academically. Now, when shifting your concern to the fee structure, then you will have to pay an amount of around INR 52,825 as the primary tuition fee. Alongside the tuition fees, if you are planning to opt for a hostel in the later stage, then it can amount to at least INR 10,500.

Besides the tuition fee and your subsequent hostel fees, you also have to follow up with the submission of a certain security fee as well, which amounts to at least INR 5,000, forming a subtotal of INR 63,325 + INR 5,000.

Other than that, if you have secured a fee waiver seat, then you might have to pay about INR 23825 as the tuition fees alongside the charges mentioned formerly, forming a subtotal of about INR 34,825 + INR 5,000.

One of my friends graduated from the Heritage Institute of Technology and here is what he had to say about the management quota admission at the institute.

The total fee for the IT branch under the management quota at Heritage Institute Technology can even go up to 10-12 lakhs.

If you are not getting a good college based on your rank then you should think twice about taking admission in engineering. Don't waste any of the hard-earned money. IT is such a branch where you will have to code for your whole life. So, make sure you are up for that, before taking admission.

Do you think ISB Hyderabad charging 30+ Lakhs as fees for an MBA is justified given the fact that the institute is not approved by AICTE or UGC?

JS
Jigar Shah Posted On : February 7th, 2023
Studied at Indian School of Business (2018)

Before I share my sister's experience let me clarify something. Corporations do not care if the Institute you pursued MBA from is AICTE or UGC approved or not. They consider MBA degrees as diplomas and titles attached to the candidates for namesake only.

My sister wanted to become a professor at a university. In that light, she cleared NET and applied to DU. But they did not accept her as she did not have an MBA degree. They suggested she get one from a prestigious B School like IIM Ahmedabad. She right away changed her mind about becoming a university professor. So from her experience, we can derive the following conclusions

  • Even the top IIMs don’t grant degrees but diplomas. The fact that they are AICTE-approved or not rarely matters. It’s just the name of the Institute that matters.
  • If you are inclined towards a profession that requires a degree or recognition from top B schools like IIMA, only then the degree and the institute's worth become important. Most recruiters don’t care if the institutes are recognized by AICTE or UGC or not.

So look at other factors while considering if the high fees are worth it or not rather than the Institute’s accreditation.
