IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, and Lucknow are not suitable for the operations stream. If you are certain that this is the path you want to take, NITIE is the best option for you. The fact that the fees are less than half those of IIM C is an added bonus.
If you are unsure of which stream you want to pursue a career in or if you prefer a stream other than operations, IIM Calcutta is the best option.
Consider fees as an added benefit to NITIE. Do not consider it a deciding factor in your studies. Obtaining loans is simple; banks practically beg to lend to you. And once you graduate from college, you will be financially secure enough to cover your student loans.
I think I can give you some information regarding this as I have friends who graduated from NITIE.
Approximately a score of around 700 + in the GATE examination for the general category can get you a call for the interview rounds of NITIE. The total number of seats available for Civil Engineering students through GATE, PGDIE-144 & PGDPM-44, is 188.
However, it is a bit difficult to answer your second question, but if you fulfill the eligibility criteria and prepare well, you will have a fair and equal chance of getting through the interview rounds which are GD & PI. In NITIE Mumbai the maximum number of students are from the mechanical/ production branch and then Civil, CSE, and ECE branches.
NITIE does not disclose the shortlisting or selection criteria. You have to do well and have good scores to get through.
Everything depends on your interest and priorities. If you aim to build up a career in the OPS or Supply chains, then you should opt for NITIE.
But if you want an IIT tag more, then go for IIT Bombay. But it is important to note that IITs are more focused on B.Tech degrees and not MBAs. There is no doubt that IIT Bombay is a great college but when comparing it to colleges of equal repute, personal preferences matter more. It is important to make an informed decision based on what your priorities are.
It also depends on what domain you are more interested in. If it is Consultancy, then they should opt for IIT Kharagpur. Do check the specialization of the college before making any decision.
For the General category, the minimum CGPA required to get into NITIE is 6.0 (CGPA 5.5 for other categories). The rest of the evaluation criteria are GATE/ CAT scores and work experience (for freshers, they consider the Final year project) and your performance at GD-PI for the admission process.
NITIE Cutoffs 2021 (Expected):
Category | PGDIM CAT percentile | PGDISEM CAT percentile |
General | 97 | 86 |
OBC | 75 | 75 |
SC/ ST | 65 | 75 |
PwD | 75 | 65 |
You can find the latest eligibility criteria on the official website.
Choose wisely by taking all B school reports with a level of caution. Instead of quitting your job and enrolling in a school where you might get a placement that is below average, opt for an Executive MBA if you are currently employed and secure. In this situation, you should choose NITIE because of its location in Mumbai, which is crucial for attracting top employers for placements.
For at least the next ten years, stay away from all new IIMs. It is not recommended at all to enroll in business schools that are less than 15 years old after leaving a secure job because they take at least 15-20 years to establish themselves. Only when your salary is between 3 and 4 LPAs should you think about enrolling in a new or infant IIM. Alternatively, you could try switching to a better organization that will likely pay you more money.
Since NITIE is a mecca of Supply Chain management, more options are there for operations and supply chain profiles. Few operations and marketing profiles are offered to freshers only who have no prior work experience.
As a matter of fact, if you look at the profiling of any batch, more than 60% of students are placed in supply chain management. There are not many companies that come to NITIE with dedicated finance and marketing profiles and the students interested in marketing and operation profiles get into FMCGs which offer profiles somewhat related to marketing.
Last year various banking firms came with finance profiles and offered good packages to freshers as well as experienced.
One of the main reasons why NITIE is preferred over IITs and PSUs is that it provides placement at a higher package than any PSU.
In the case of IITB, if the branch in question is CS, M.Tech is unquestionably superior, given the tremendous growth expected in this sector in the coming years.
One of my friends studied at NITIE and here are some facts that I got to know from him about the college, their academics, and faculty.
The faculties at NITIE are good, especially the professors from SCM & Operations are really good. They will engage students with their live case studies and the real problems faced by the industries.
There are some other professors who are appreciated by the students and the overall ranking for the faculty in NITIE would be 7.5 out of 10
It all actually depends on your interest. As both of these options are completely different and two different areas of interest. You must choose what you find interesting. There would not be any conflict between these two institutes over the placement stats as both of them will give good placements to their students. Here are the recent placement highlights of the institutes.
Parameters | NITIE | IISc |
Average CTC | 20 LPA | 10 LPA |
Highest CTC | 43 LPA | 40 LPA |
Major recruiters | ETLI, EY, IDFC First | HP, Dell, Intel |
If you are interested in tough work that is more challenging or research and development-oriented, you should choose IISc. As in the world of Nanoscience, IISc is the country’s most renowned institution. And if you are more inclined towards managerial work, then it would be better to go to NITIE.
PGDIE opens various opportunities in different areas like industrial engineering, industrial design, Supply chain, and operations management. After completion of this course, you can expect yourself to be working at one of the top companies in India.
Most of my friends got placed in an FMCG company and are currently working in different domains. You will be given challenging projects every now and then. This will groom you for a business scenario. A good college will not guarantee a high-paying job in a top company, but it will only provide you with the best academics and exposure you will need in securing that job.
Working in an FMCG company will make your presence realize whenever you find your designed product in a supermarket. You will work hard enough to deliver the right product at right time.
Maintain very good academic records and prepare hard enough to get a job in a top company that offers very good opportunities and facilities to its employees, then your life after PGDIE can be great.
