Yes, all you need to do is focus on your CAT score and score around 99.5 or more.
The first stage for admission is the PI rounds which take place on the basis of your composite score. The composite score has
CAT score
Class 10th score
Class 12th score
Gender Diversity
Your class 10th and 12th scores will be calculated as follows
Class 10- Greater than or equal to 80 gets 10 marks
Class 12- Greater than or equal to 70 gets 6 marks.
This score is not a bad one and still can get you into IIMC as long as you get a high CAT score.
For the next round, your work experience comes into consideration. Your above-average 10th marks and average or below average 12th marks demand a high CAT score along with above-average work experience to get into IIM Calcutta.
Let’s discuss the changes in getting admission into IIM Calcutta through past figures (general category only).
Apart from CAT score, the chances of getting into IIMC depend on various factors such as
Academic profile (i.e. marks in 10th, 12th, and undergraduate)
Academic Diversity
Work experience
Gender Diversity
Category-based evaluation (EWS, NC-OBC, SC, ST, PWD)
IIM Calcutta has around 200-220 general category seats. Also, it rejects 4 students for 1 selection which means around 1100 students are shortlisted. To be among these 1100 students you need to have at least 99.33 percentile.
The chances increase if you are a favorable candidate apart from a high CAT score. Being a female, non-engineer, decent work experience. If you aren’t then your cutoff increases to 99.5.
Your chances drop to 0.5% and passing the interview round becomes more difficult.
So work around the factors I have mentioned beforehand to become a favorable candidate for admission into IIMC
Yes, there is a chance that you may not receive a call from IIM even after scoring 100 percentile in CAT. However, this happens only for IIM Bangalore.
You will receive a call from IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta because they choose the top 50 percentilers. But IIM Bangalore has an unknown logarithm for the admission process. I think it focuses too much on academics.
Yes, students of IIM Ahmedabad with no prior work experience can participate in the double degree programme with the European Institutes. The selection for the same is based on:
Your academic performance
Extracurricular performance
Any foreign exposure
So your work experience has nothing to do with the double degree program. Rather your academic performance at IIM Ahmedabad and prior foreign exposure helps you in getting selected for this program.
Yes, there are many people who took a drop for CAT and got selected in IIMs. At this stage, your interview matters the most. So read well and prepare the best to answer ‘what were you doing in the meantime’.
Answer this question confidently because here they are not exposing your weakness but testing your confidence in yourself. Just say that I was preparing to be here for the interview. Further you can claim that all the other candidates who have taken CAT are still at a level same as yours in the interview round. So rather than experience it’s one eagerness and ambitions that counts.
All you need to do is impress the interviewer and you are good to go.
Past academics are now taken into consideration for the admission into IIMA. I have tabulated the data for past academic criteria below
Percentage Range |
10th (% of batch in this range) |
12th (% of batch in this range) |
Graduation (% of batch in this range) |
90-100 |

So from the above table we can infer that for the 10th class you fall in the 13% category which is still hopeful. But for the 12th class you fall in the 3.6% category. So your chances of getting into IIMA are less although not completely impossible. Exceptions are always there.
Honestly, anyone with a decent profile can pursue MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. The question is how well you can score in your CAT. Anything below 96 is not accepted.
Another tip that will help you get selected for MBA from IIM Ahmedabad is to make good use of your Bachelor years. You can:
Study Economics and Business alongside BSc
Participate in National & University level Business Case Study Competitions
Enhance your English speaking skills
To prepare for the interviews, read newspapers, articles and essays on current economic issues. Lastly, answer all the questions confidently.
The dual degree exchange program means spending 2 terms abroad. This program has only 10 seats and the criteria for selection is solely performance in the first year at IIMA. You will get a Master in Management degree from your exchange university. But you will have to complete a Master's thesis at the exchange university as a requirement for the degree.
Because of its firmness, this degree is not opted by many students. One of my friends did opt for this degree from EBS and she shared her experience of how she managed to get 2 degrees simultaneously.
Firstly, the course curriculum at EBS ends in June. Then she had to write her thesis and submit it by November. But her job in India was to start in May so she requested to complete the thesis alongside the curriculum. Her request was accepted. She completed her thesis by April and returned back to her job in India.
She was the first person to graduate in her Masters batch at EBS. This degree helped her get a good deal of exposure to academic culture in Europe.
No, it’s not necessary that all 100 percentiles get into IIM Ahmedabad. Either they don’t get selected or they have some other college at the top of their preference list.
The CAT 100 percentilers opt for either of the following options:
Many 100 percentilers with work experience tend to apply for GMAT if they want to pursue their career abroad.
Some with even 100 percentile don’t get into B-Schools at all. They either pursue teaching in that field. Nowadays MBA preparation websites and CAT coaching Institutes are common.
Not all 100 percentilers are lucky enough to make it into IIMA. They get rejected in the interview round.
It’s not necessary that every 100 percentiler has IIMA at the top of their preference list. Some might prefer IIMB because of location or FMS because of the fee structure.
We can say that the chances of 100 percentilers getting into IIMA are high but not assured.
No, you cannot appear for IGNOU December TEE if you have taken admission in the July session.
For instance, you have taken admission to the July 2022 session. You are required to submit your assignments before 31st March 2023. Only after submitting your assignments, you are eligible for the TEE Exam, and that too in the month of June 2023.
In special cases, like you were not able to give some exams you can appear for the December TEE exams though.
