It's difficult to determine which is better chemical engineering at NIT Trichy or computer science at NIT Durgapur. In fact, it's illogical to compare two diverse fields and choose one between them. Both are completely different in the knowledge, scope, and job opportunities they offer. Clarity of goals is very important for the right choice. It’s better to analyze your inclinations first and put the choice of the institute at the back. Imagine your life after 10 years and picture what you would like yourself to be doing
In general, NIT Trichy is the best NIT. So if you have an interest in chemical engineering, and want to pursue a PG or research, then choose NIT Trichy. However, bear in mind that the placements of this branch aren’t very promising so it won’t be a very good choice if you are planning to work right after graduation. If you want a stable job with a corporate lifestyle, then choose NIT Durgapur CSE. You can also pursue an MS or MBA post-graduation.
Ultimately the choice depends on your career prospects!
Here is a detailed review shared by my brother who completed his graduation from NIT Durgapur
Overall, NIT Durgapur is a great place if you are unable to make it to IITs.
No, in no way is NIT Durgapur better than Jadavpur University. NIT Durgapur's overall ranking by NIRF is 90 out of 200 colleges in India in 2023 while that of Jadavpur University is. JU is placed right after the 7 old IITs and Anna University. Whereas NIT Durgapur is not even in the top 50.
One of my friends got CSE in NIT Durgapur and Electrical Engineering in JU and he chose the latter despite his home being near NIT Durgapur. Here is a brief overview of both the institutes

So unless you are getting a decent branch into 7 IITs, it’s best to go for Jadavpur University.
Both the colleges have their pros and cons. Your choice of college should be based on branch. I did my Mechanical from NIT Durgapur and my friend did his Mechanical from Jadavpur University. I am eligible to answer this question.
First of all, JU is much higher in ranking than NIT Durgapur. Also, the fees at JU are way more affordable. As JU is located in Kolkata, IT companies visit the campus more often. As far as core courses are concerned, the faculty for ME especially, is good at both the colleges. But core placements are much better at NIT Durgapur because PSUs visit the campus. On the other hand, JU students have to sit for GATE.
If you wish to study CS, IT or ECE, choose Jadavpur University without second thought. As far as core jobs are concerned, choose NIT Durgapur.
As a Mechanical Engineering student at NIT Durgapur, I am listing down some important points about my branch-
As per my personal experience, you can definitely consider B.Tech Mechanical from NIT Durgapur.
Like everyone else, I too was a little skeptical about NIT Durgapur during admissions. But as time passed by, I enjoyed my campus life and made numerous friends..
The campus will allow you to meet people from different backgrounds. You’ll even get in touch with some foreign students. Within a few weeks, you’ll make new friends.
There are many clubs at NIT Durgapur and you can join more than one. Some of these are- Music Club, Dance Club, Literary Circle, CCA, MNTC, Spic Macay, etc. There is no favoritism during club selections. You’ll get to know of hangout spots like NIT Duck Pond or Techno.
As far as academics is concerned, there are some exceptional teachers in every branch who will light up your passion for learning. For example, SG sir in the EE department. Academics has become stricter since course and semester structure were revised a few years back.
During your final year, placements will be the most important. Do not worry, the placement record of NIT Durgapur is good. You’ll find that most students study only a week before exams. But make sure you know your subjects well. Otherwise you’ll face problems during the placement season.
NIT Durgapur will give you freedom. But you’ll soon realize the responsibilities that accompany it. Campus life, especially hostel life, is great.
As a final-year ECE student at NIT Durgapur, I will share my observations about this department with you.
NIT Durgapur offers no research facilities as such. So if you enter the ECE department expecting research-based innovative studies, you’ll be disappointed. You’ll score a good CGPA. You will get the opportunity to intern at CERN, through a good CGPA. Other than that, the curriculum doesn’t really offer much growth. Most people aren’t that driven or hardworking over here.
Since 2017, however, changes in curriculum and faculty have opened doors for improvement. The infrastructure and lab facilities of this college need a lot of improvement. Phd. scholars should be selected more carefully for teaching the students.
I recommend you try Jadavpur ECE. You can also search for some other option that is better than NIT Durgapur ECE.
As an alumni of Biotech at NIT Durgapur, I will tell you about the placement scenario of this course.
Only 20-30% Biotech students are placed, mostly through Mass hirings. Usually the salary ranges from 3-4 LPA. Those who are able to grab IT jobs are offered around 5-6 LPA. These are hardly 4-6 students from an entire batch. Top IT and consulting companies visiting the campus do not allow Biotech students to sit for placements. Also, core companies do not visit the campus for placements.
Do not join Biotechnology at NIT Durgapur if you seek placements. But for higher studies, you can join this department. Students from Biotech get admissions into renowned Indian and foreign universities for higher education.
Having friends in both the institutes, I can say that overall, NIT Durgapur is a better choice among the two. But IIEST is also an excellent institute with national importance.
There are several factors that affect the placement in both the institutes, according to them here are some -
