What is placement of civil engineering at IIT Kanpur and KGP?

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : April 19th, 2023
lives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

Irrespective of the Institute, placements for Civil Engineering are just average and not at par with IIT standards. Here’s why:

  • Very few reputed firms make it to the placements for CE
  • Core companies prefer experienced professionals rather than freshers so students are instead taken as a trainee the pay for which is very less
  • The work of a civil engineer is extremely risky and only those with immense practical experience contribute to the firm's success. So your pay and job security is increased only after gaining considerable experience.
  • One needs a lot of patience to stick to this sector.
  • The majority of the batch prefers non-core jobs as the pay is much better and no such experience is required.
  • Employees tend to switch industries to secure a better package both in core and non-core although the scope of this is more in noncore companies.

These placement highlights were related only to the Indian market and not the situation outside India might be different.

One can judge the worth and credibility of a Brand, Affiliation, Faculty, Return on investment, Infrastructure, Industry Linkage, Location, and Placements. I have done the same through my answer and hope that it clears away all your doubts regarding IIT KGP MBA.

Brand: The IIT tag is more than enough to make any course pursued worthy and credible.

Faculty: IIT Kharagpur's faculty pool is known to have the best professors, especially in Operations and Finance courses.

Pedagogy: The teaching methodology adopted to impart the course content is a case-based approach that ensures a better understanding of real-life business problems.

ROI: IIT KGP MBA fees are around 9 Lakhs and are lesser in comparison to top B Schools. Therefore the ROI is also higher.

Infrastructure: IIT Kharagpur boasts top-notch infrastructure, with excellent amenities like sports facilities, a gymnasium, a big library, and a huge campus.

Industry relevance: Most professors conduct research/ consulting work for corporations, so you can get their help during live projects or Internship hunting.

Guest visits: IIT KGP witnesses a number of guest lectures and corporate meets and the college has managed to invite guest faculties and industry experts on campus.

Location: IIT Kharagpur has a very poor location and thus many top recruiters do not visit the campus despite it being an IIT.

Placements: Placements depend upon a lot of factors like work experience, nature of the experience, economic scenario for that year, etc.

VGSOM IIT Kharagpur has recorded 100% placements in 2022. All 97 students who opted for placements were placed during VGSOM placements in 2022. Further, the highest and average packages offered during VGSOM IIT Kharagpur placements 2022 were INR 31.98 LPA and INR 19.36 LPA, respectively.

How tough is securing above 9.0 CGPA at IIT Kharagpur?

SG
Senjuti Gupta Posted On : March 22nd, 2023
studied at IIT Kgp

I wouldn’t say that securing an above 9.0 CGPA at IIT Kharagpur is very tough. With the right motivation, even an average student can get a 9+ CGPA. When it comes to grading, IIT KGP has two methods

  • Relative Grading: Under this, professors are required to give a 9+ CGPA to 25% of the batch which comprises roughly 100 students. Now it’s up to the professor to decide who is worthy of such high grades. While some professors give a 10 CGPA to only the deserving students, many professors casually grade the students without much thought.
  • Absolute Grading: This is a rather rigid grading system wherein grading is done on the basis of cumulative marks. Students scoring 90–100 get a 10 while those 80–90 get a 9 and so on. The upper and lower limits are not fixed and the cutoff is decided by the professor itself. This grading system is usually followed in the Maths Department.

So we can conclude that getting a 9+ CGPA becomes a lot easier if you have no other distractions such as research or social work and you have been attending classes regularly.

Lastly, I would like to say that CGPA is not the only deciding factor. There are many students with a decent CGPA of 8+ who have made decent accomplishments and done high-level research or wonders in startups. The main agenda is to gain maximum exposure and then plan your future.

Is it possible for a student studying Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur to get placed in a decent coding company?

NG
Nikhil Goal Posted On : March 22nd, 2023
Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP)

Honestly, a true coding lover needs not to worry too much about placements. They should just be good in what they do and certainly, an opportunity will come their way.

Let’s explain this through an example of a friend who was a graduate of Industrial Engineering and Management, IIT Kharagpur, and is currently in Amazon as a Software Development Engineer.

Owing to his Industrial Background, he faced backlash initially and couldn’t sit for placements in big companies like Adobe, Google, Microsoft, and Goldman Sachs. He then came across a startup company - BankBazaar that visited the campus on the 2nd day of placements and also had a coding test. He passed the test with flying Colors and

for the first offer during that placement season.

Ever since then, he started receiving calls from top companies like Amazon, Google, Walmart Labs, etc. He soon joined Amazon and worked for a few years. Recently, he got a call from Goldman Sachs HR for the Goldman Sachs, Strategic Group. This came as a surprise since this company only prefers toppers from IITs and IIMs. It was his dream job to make mathematical models and program them. Fortunately, all his interviews went pretty well and in the end, he was introduced to the Managing Director of the Finance Division, at Goldman Sachs. who conducted a discussion on the projects he would be working on.

After experiencing almost 3 years in the Software Industry, my friend only advised coding lovers to focus solely on their passions and let the world find them.

Is anyone pursuing PGDBA course jointly conducted by IIM Calcutta, IIT Kharagpur and ISI Kolkata. What is the scope of this new course?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : March 22nd, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

My friend had opted for the PGDBA course jointly conducted by IIM Calcutta, IIT Kharagpur, and ISI Kolkata. She claims it to be the best decision of her life.

  • Course: The course curriculum comprises R, Python, Hadoop, MapReduce, Spark, Radian6, and Sql and is highly industry relevant. You get to work on a lot of data. The course also includes a number of projects that can be done based on the subjects chosen. On average, a student works on 2-4 projects.
  • Exposure: Since the course is industry relevant, one can expect frequent industry expert visits and guest lectures. These academic collaborations ensure maximum exposure.
  • Job prospects: This course is not for you if you have a specific company in mind. This is because the course is relatively new and has yet to make its mark among top companies. It also depends on whether the recruiting company is looking for people with Analytical skills.

The same friend who graduated from this course had worked on a total of 14 projects and ended up interning with McKinsey. At the end of her internship, McKinsey planned to create a new role - Data Scientist for graduates and other similar recruits. Since then, a lot of big companies have participated in internships and placements in addition to international offers. Since then, the demand for the course has been increasing.

Today, the placement reports show an average placement offer of INR 3507000 which is more than the course fee of INR 2400000.

We can safely conclude that this course places you well within the industry and is worth the high fee spent.

How much is a CGPA of 6.5 (at IIT Kharagpur) in percentage format? Is there any formula?

SG
Senjuti Gupta Posted On : March 22nd, 2023
studied at IIT Kgp

IIT Kharagpur has adopted a notional factor of 10 for CGPA to Percent conversion.

This basically means that

Your % = Your C.G.P.A. * 10

Whenever you are required to provide proof of your marks to a company, you can submit your grade sheet. A provisional grade sheet is provided by the institute only on request and after payment of the requisite fee - INR 25

So, your CGPA of 6.5 can be converted into 65 percent.

What is the average package at IIT, Kharagpur for applied geology?

SG
Senjuti Gupta Posted On : March 22nd, 2023
studied at IIT Kgp

The average packages of “Applied Geology” or any other branch apart from CS, ECE, EE, and MnC are highly misleading as they include both core and non-core jobs with non-core jobs forming the majority.

In reality, IIT campus placements offer very few core jobs in certain departments and Applied Geology Is one of them. So most of the students tend to go for Non-Core jobs related to their field of interest like Coding, Finance, Data Analysis, etc. The number of companies offering core jobs in departments such as Mechanical or Chemical is very low. So out of the entire batch, only toppers are offered core jobs while the rest go for non-core jobs. The placement percentage is a combination of both these jobs and thus cannot tell you specifically about the placements of that particular department.

On an average batch size of 25-30 students, only 4-5 get core jobs in Applied Geology while the rest get non-core jobs. So your skills and abilities matter a lot during such branch placements. The median salary of Applied Geology is around INR 15 LPA and some top recruiters include Capgemini, Cipla, Cognizant, Genpact, IBM, ICICI, Just dial, Oil India Limited, YesBank, and more.
