AS
Ankit Sharma Posted On : September 19th, 2023
B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad (2018)

IIT Dhanbad is a good option for students to pursue a degree in chemical engineering. The institute falls in the upper hand in terms of academic offerings and career placements. Even this institution has developed a lot in the past five years.

A few reasons for choosing IIT Dhanbad for chemical engineering are as follows:

  • According to the NIRF report 2023 IIT Dhanbad raked 17 among all top engineering institutes in the country this depicts the academic excellence, infrastructure, faculty strength, etc.
  • All of the faculty members are intelligent and welcoming. They are extremely knowledgeable in their fields. Their course syllabus is appropriate for students who are interested in working in the core industry in the future.
  • About 70-80% of students are accepted for campus job placement in IIT Dhanbad. The average package ranges between INR 16-17 LPA and the highest package is around INR 56 LPA. The top employers for ECE professionals are Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Goldman Sachs,
  • etc
  • IITs often have strong alumni networks which can be helpful for networking, placements, and internships. Vinay Kumar Dewan (Founder and Chairman of Bramco Group, Bahrain. Operates in Middle East, India, Germany, UK, and USA), Dr. Ganesh Thakur- Vice President, Chevron Corporation, USA. 2012 International President, Society of Petroleum Engineers, USA), Dr. Mihir Sinha (Energy finance specialist. Former Vice President of J. P. Morgan, USA). And many more eminent professionals are part of IIT Dhanbad.

In conclusion, IIT Dhanbad would be a good choice for pursuing chemical engineering. With its established reputation, experienced faculty, placement opportunities, and well-equipped campus. It creates a favorable environment for academic as well as personal growth.

Should I opt for Chemical Engineering at NIT Surathkal or at NIT Warangal?

Namrata Das Posted On : September 16th, 2023

Since you are looking for the same branch, I think you should give preference to the institutes. That being said, it’s not a brainer that NIT Warangal is much better than NIT Surathkal in terms of academics, job opportunities, and campus life. In fact both the colleges give tough competition to each other since they are among the top 3 NITs.

The only reason I am giving more preference to NIT Warangal is because it has a branch change policy which NIT Surathkal does not. So if after studying Chemical Engineering you realize that it’s not your cup of tea, you can opt for a branch change. However, it’s important to note that this process is neither easy nor tough.

One of my friends studied at NIT Warangal and told me that every year many chemical and biotech students slide to branches like ECE, CSE, Mechanical, etc.

So both are great options with NIT Warangal having a slight upper hand over NIT Surathkal.

Should I take IIT Delhi chemical or take a drop?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

I am not saying that taking a dropout is a bad decision. Most people who appear for JEE more than once tend to score better after the first time. It is not an issue and don’t let people convince you otherwise.

However, you should have a very just reason for taking a drop. Just because you couldn’t get into your dream branch does not mean, you cannot do well in other branches. In that case, you can consider the CS branch of other 2nd-tier Engineering colleges rather than taking a drop year. Moreover, you will be answerable for the same in your interview, and might work against your favor in your interview.

On research, you will find that the median salary of IIT Guwahati and other engineering colleges is almost on par with that of IIT Kanpur and Madras. There is a difference, but not big enough to make you take a year drop out. Ultimately, only you can make the decision but I have laid down the cards, make a wise decision.

Is branch change from Mining/Metallurgy to Chemical/Mechanical easy at VNIT Nagpur?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : November 18th, 2023

Your possibilities of a switch mainly depend on the number of vacant seats in the desired branch, and the merit of all those aiming for that same branch.

But roughly, for Mechanical you need a score of 9.3 CGPA+ during your first year. On the other hand, for Chemical, you need 8.5 CGPA+.

If you pay attention in the classroom, solve class assignments on time, and your concepts are clear, you can easily score well in your first year. The student notice board on the official college website releases the cutoffs for branch switch each year.

This is the basic information regarding branch switch to Chemical/ Mechanical at VNIT. Branch switch at VNIT Nagpur isn’t difficult given that you work hard, and things work in your favor.

Is it better to choose mechanical engineering at IIT Kharagpur or chemical engineering at IIT Bombay?

AB
Advaith Bhaskar Posted On : March 20th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India (2000–present)

Getting into IIT is a big achievement only if you manage to choose the right branch for yourself.

You should analyze your ambitions and interests in a particular field and determine what you possibly imagine yourself to be doing in 5 years and then make an informed decision. Clarity of goals is extremely necessary to make this crucial decision of choosing a branch.

If you want to enter politics, then your branch hardly matters.

If you want to become an entrepreneur try to get an idea of the type of company you want to start

Basically, the choice of the branch is strictly a personal preference and cannot be objectively decided.

Your choice can be based either on the branch or on college.

NIT Surathkal is a better choice than NIT Calicut and NIT Durgapur. As far as placements are concerned, they aren’t any better for Civil or Chemical either. It is always more beneficial to go for branches like ECE, CSE, IT and EEE from a placement point of view.

Here are the placement figures for NIT Durgapur, NIT Calicut and NIT Surathkal-

Parameters

NIT Durgapur Civil (2023)

NIT Durgapur Chemical (2023)

NIT Calicut Civil (2022)

NIT Surathkal

Mining (2022)

Placement %

81.97%

83.33%

87.75%

-

Average Package

7.39 LPA

8.87 LPA

7.36 LPA

11.19 LPA (Majority CTC between 8-12 LPA)

Highest Package

In case you have a branch preference, go for that option. With an interest in your branch, you’ll eventually pave a path for yourself. It is possible that you have no particular branch preference.Your ultimate goal might be an MBA, for which you’re simply seeking a B.Tech degree. In that case, choose Mining at NIT Surathkal.

How is chemical engineering at IIT Madras?

SD
Shweta Das Posted On : March 28th, 2023
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2019)

My sister recently completed her BTech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras and being interested in Core only, she shared her experience.

  • Curriculum: The courses under Chemical Engineering usually are Transport Phenomena (Mass, Heat & Momentum Transfer), Reaction Engineering, Process Control & Economics. Most of these courses covered obsolete ideas and idealistic scenarios that were hardly industry relevant.
  • Professors: The best professors teaching core courses are Prof. Shankar, Raghu, and Niket which one gets by luck only. The best professors teaching electives are Prof. Tangirala, Pushpavanam, and Shankar Narasimhan who teach a lot of high-tech stuff.
  • Job prospects: A BTech graduate in Chemical Engineering can expect roles such as Process Engineer in companies like Shell, or a Field Engineer at Schlumberger. Honestly, a UG has fewer opportunities in India and only a higher degree in Chemical Engineering can open better opportunities for you such as R&D roles in companies like HUL, ITC, and Shell.
  • Research: This branch is well known for its research culture both Computational and Experimental. Computational research is conducted in fields like process modeling, signals, multivariate data analytics, and process optimization, whereas experimental research at Chemical Engineering Laboratory and Combustion Research Centre is conducted in pyrolysis, catalysis, nanotechnology, fluidized beds & columns, etc.
  • Miscellaneous: Chemical Engineering students have a lot of free time on their hands which helps them focus on hobbies, side projects, passions, and non-core interests. They are also free from strenuous lab sessions and assignment deadlines.

Overall, the chemical engineering program at IIT Madras is considered to be of high quality and is a great choice for students interested in the field.
