Why is IIT Roorkee not considered good for computer science?

SM
Soumyadeep Mahapata Posted On : April 14th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

IIT Roorkee is a renowned institution for engineering and technology, but its reputation for CS may not be as strong as other institutions. This is mainly due to a lack of resources, a limited number of faculty members with expertise in computer science, or a lack of emphasis on computer science. Here are a few pointers regarding the CS department of IIT Roorkee

  • The peer group consists of top rankers and there is intense competition as almost everyone is a genius
  • IIT Roorkee’s CS department is understaffed with limited faculty whose area of expertise is CS. Also, the existing professors and their pedagogy are not unique in any way.
  • Although the computer center is decent, the lab facilities are very poor and need to be taken care of

It’s better you lower your expectations before joining the CS department of IIT Roorkee, especially in terms of research. The professors here have limited knowledge and you won’t find them very helpful. You will have to develop your interest and pursue them individually. You will have to even learn coding yourself as most professors are unaware of the basic know-how. Competitions like ICPC, and GSOC are not supported by the Management and you will have to build and team yourself and work on it.

The placements are pretty good with most top companies visiting the campus with good packages. However, you are given the least assistance in placements and will have to prepare everything yourself. Ultimately you will depend most on your peers for everything.

How do I write career goal column while filling FMS Delhi application form?

SP
Sai Prashanth Posted On : December 30th, 2022
Studied at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad

You can fill the career goa column with points like these

  1. why are you better than the rest
  2. why did you choose FMS
  3. How is MBA related to achieving your goals

The first question can be answered by mentioning your strengths and weaknesses and how you have qualities and skills that others lack. You can speak about the goal-oriented mindset that has brought you to the interview room.

The answer to the next question can be written after talking to an alumnus of FMS. You can mention things like ROI or the low fees factor, the excellent faculty, and the accreditation with Delhi University. All these reasons made it almost impossible for you to not choose FMS.

The answer to the last question is a bit tricky as one necessarily does not have goals while pursuing MBA. Most people do it because many intellectuals are also doing so. And trust me this is not wrong. All you need is to trust the process and their intellect. One smart way to answer this question is to establish a past belief in how you have known it all along and how you made it. You can write your ultimate goal and also how this is just the starting point.

Some points to consider while writing these answers are

  • Write the answers such that it reflects your true self
  • Proofread the answers for connotations, interpretations and grammatical errors

Just know that this form is not the basis for shortlisting just a basis for the questions that will be asked to you.

Which one is better bit Mesra or LNMIIT Jaipur?

RS
Riya Singhania Posted On : April 20th, 2021
B.Tech in Electronics and Telecommunication at BIT Mesra (2019)

When talking about BIT Mesra and LNMIIT Jaipur, you need to reconsider the branch you are opting for. If you are anyhow interested in pursuing the branch of Computer Science, and you are simultaneously not getting the required seat at BIT Mesra, then choosing CSE at LNMIIT Jaipur will not actually be that bad of a choice.

  • Despite all facts considered, BIT Mesra still is one step taller in regards to the academic background since it was established years back and is known to be very old. Other than that, it has earned the reputation it now is known for in India.
  • LNMIIT is still sowing seeds of growth and is in its early years. Yet, it has not stopped it from growing rapidly, each particular year, in every aspect as important.
  • BIT Mesra boasts its average package of INR 9.11 Lakhs Per Annum, and the highest that it has reached over time, from the national aspect is 34 lakhs per annum.
  • The zeal that this institution enjoys pushes past every other record, thus choosing it over the latter will supposedly be a better choice, if not the best.

BIT is hoping to push past more records, and enhance over time. It is known by students too that you will not regret the 4 years time of your course after graduating from the institution.

On contrary to BIT’s success, LNMIIT stands with an average package of 10.2 lakh per annum. That means both of them are good. But regardless of that fact, BIT Mesra still stands one step higher from LNMIIT Jaipur in total.

Does CGPA matters in placements in NIT Trichy?

SM
Sanjana Mukharjee Posted On : June 6th, 2022
B.Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering, NIT Trichy

Yes, CGPA matters. Most recruiting companies participating in the NIT Trichy placement drive have a cutoff. For software companies, the required cutoff is lower and more emphasis is placed on skills and communication skills. While for core companies the required cutoff is higher. Try to have a CGPA of above 8, to be safe.

A CGPA will help you get over the initial hurdles. After you clear the online tests and interviews, the selection will depend on your performance.

How is the hostel life at Reva University Bangalore?

DK
Dharam Kumar Posted On : October 13th, 2021
B.E. Mechanical Engineering, Reva Institute of Technology and Management Bangalore (2017)

Basically, the hostel of Reva University is almost the same as that of any other college but there are some additional features as well.

  • There are plenty of rooms with a separate boys and girls hostel.
  • Some rules are there that need to be followed strictly and since the list is very long so sometimes students break them.
  • Also, exit and entry times for girls have to be recorded regularly and after some time girls and boys cannot roam around the campus together.
  • There is a separate mess for girls and boys, the food is also not too good but if you have ever spent your life in the hostel, you will be acclimatized to the situation.
  • There is a food court near the canteen from where you can buy the eateries till 8 pm.
  • There are several shops also providing fast foods and bakery items.
  • The next thing is that the college has a functional and well-equipped library that is open till 12 midnight and 7 days.

Thus, we can conclude that the college is slowly and steadily taking its place in the heart of the students by improving certain things. Otherwise, the resources are there, the only thing you need to do is utilize them properly.

What is the most useless branch at NIT, Rourkela?

AK
Ashish Kumar Posted On : August 14th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2019)

I don't think there is a single useless branch at NIT Rourkela or at any institute. The diverse branches aim at catering to the needs of all kinds of students. So a branch that is useless for you might be useful for someone else and vice versa. Moreover, if a branch seems to be useless then it's because its students are not passionate enough to make the most out of it. Comparing branches can also result in this preconceived notion of a rank being inferior to the other.

It's always better to find solutions than to complain. Rather than declaring a specific branch to be useless, we should identify its weaknesses and work on them for instance, one of my friends found his branch to be below average and he along with his batchmates used to sit and single out companies that could hire them they even talked to the professors regarding the changes that coil be made in the curriculum to make the course more appealing and informative.

I believe once you start focusing on gaining knowledge rather than earning money, you won't find a single branch useless. Yes, a branch can provide lesser job opportunities than other branches but that does not make it useless.

As a final year student with very limited coding skills studying at IIT Kharagpur, how should I prepare for the upcoming placements?

NG
Nikhil Goal Posted On : March 22nd, 2023
Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP)

If you are someone with a low CGPA and no coding skills, here are a few ways to prepare for your placements

Apply off-campus: This will give you a push and will make sure you prepare your CV way before others. You will also be able to upscale it better. Having prior interview experience will help you prepare for being confident, convince others, and handling rejections. Moreover, you will have a chance to pursue a career in a field of interest that is not possible in the hustle and bustle of on-campus placements. In fact, most students forget their passions in the journey of seeking a good job and getting placed.

  • Prepare for CAT: This is an obvious yet important step. Consider this as the turning point of your career. A lot of selection tests will ask questions based on CAT so you need to be prepared for it.
  • Gather information: Be aware of all the necessary procedures pertaining to placements by talking to alumni, and finding out how selection processes work. Attend pre-placement talks and find out about companies. Gather knowledge about current events and company histories so you can appear confident and well-informed during the interview.
  • Don’t lose hope: Placements are largely based on luck as very minor factors can work in your favor or against it during an interview. Also, interviews involve a number of uncontrollable factors such as your GD group, the panel you get selected for, and the interviewer's state of mind are some factors completely beyond your control.

So it’s very important to know that failure is not the end of the world and you can achieve much more even outside of placements.

How were you selected for the dual degree exchange programme, simultaneously completing degrees from IIM Ahmedabad and EBS Business School, Germany?

RA
Rahul Anand Posted On : November 21st, 2022
PGP 2013-2015

The dual degree exchange program means spending 2 terms abroad. This program has only 10 seats and the criteria for selection is solely performance in the first year at IIMA. You will get a Master in Management degree from your exchange university. But you will have to complete a Master's thesis at the exchange university as a requirement for the degree.

Because of its firmness, this degree is not opted by many students. One of my friends did opt for this degree from EBS and she shared her experience of how she managed to get 2 degrees simultaneously.

Firstly, the course curriculum at EBS ends in June. Then she had to write her thesis and submit it by November. But her job in India was to start in May so she requested to complete the thesis alongside the curriculum. Her request was accepted. She completed her thesis by April and returned back to her job in India.

She was the first person to graduate in her Masters batch at EBS. This degree helped her get a good deal of exposure to academic culture in Europe.
