I am confused over joining IIIT Guwahati and NIT Silchar for Computer Science branch. Many of my friends have warned me of poor teaching in IIITG. How far is it true?
Both the colleges are not very good. But if you want to choose between IIIT Guwahati and NIT Silchar then it would be better to choose NIT Silchar. Because at IIIT Guwahati, the administration, infrastructure, and faculty members are not so good. If you will face any problem in the college then the administration does not even care. You will have to survive on your own.
NIT Silchar has better infrastructure as compared to IIIT Guwahati. The student union of the college will take care of the problems and they will raise their voices against them. If you have the option of not choosing northeastern colleges then you must go ahead. At the end of the day, it depends upon you how you want to spend your four years in college.
What should I opt for? CSE, IIIT Guwahati or LNMIIT?
I have friends at both IIIT Guwahati and LNMIIT and based on what I heard from them, I will recommend that you choose LNMIIT. Here are the reasons why.
- The campus life over there at LNMIIT was far better than any other college. In case you are someone from the North, you'll have difficulties adjusting to Guwahati. There isn't anything to find here be it a good social life, or cafes to chill at.
- In terms of placements, LNMIIT has so much to offer.
- In recent years it has made tremendous strides, some even claim that it has become better than Thapar University.
Being said that you can go to IIIT Guwahati if the course fee is a matter of concern for you. It is better than taking student loans for LNMIIT. IIIT Guwahati is also a viable option.
Will there be a gym for boys in the IIIT Guwahati new campus?
No, there is no gym for boys at IIIT Guwahati's new campus. According to the management, it was expected by 2019, but the institute did not make it up within the speculated time. The new campus of IIIT Guwahati was just set up in 2018, and it was the first academic year on the campus. The points below give some more information about the fact.
- In the previous campus, there were private gyms near the hostel for boys. Most students avail those gyms only.
- In the new campus, there are roughly four phases of construction. This is entirely prioritized based on the needs and requirements of the institute to set up. In the first phase of the construction, only the hostels and admission blocks were finished.
- A boy’s gym needs a lot of amenities and instruments to be a useful one. During the initial phases of construction, there is no expectation of a gym in the new campus. It may be developed during later phases.
So, getting a gym at IIIT Guwahati any sooner would be a gift from the institute. Until then, students should leave expectations for the same, and focus on other means to stay fit and healthy.
Which is better, CSE at IIIT Kalyani or electronics in IIIT Guwahati?
IIIT Guwahati is way better than IIIT Kalyani. Many of the students who were formerly enrolled in IIIT Kalyani. They left the college after analyzing the faculty, infrastructure, and hostel facilities.
My brother was in NIT Silchar before being a part of IIIT Guwahati. He went there and found out that many students were from IIIT Kalyani. Everyone has different reasons for leaving Kalyani. However, none of them were praising IIIT Kalyani.
On the other hand, they were pleased to join IIIT Guwahati. Some factors that make IIITG a better institute than IIIT Kalyani:
- Faculty to student ratio is very good
- Great infrastructure
- Good hostel and sports facilities
- Better academic syllabus as they follow their mentor institute IITG and IIITH
- Location of the institute
Hence, you can definitely go for IIITG as an institute rather than joining IIIT Kalyani. As far as the branches are concerned, CSE and ECE are totally different. But, at the end of the day, you have to decide which college you want to join. If you give more preference to the branch, you should join IIIT Kalyani but if you feel like you can slide or change your branch after the first year, you can join IIITG.
How are the mess and canteens at IIIT, Guwahati?
IIIT Guwahati has two canteens, one in the hostel building and one in the academic building.
- The canteen at IIIT Guwahati is average. It is just like the ones that are common among all the government colleges. It is not much developed and high standard, however, it serves its purpose.
- The canteens at both the girls’ and boys’ hostel are allowed to operate till late at night. The canteen in the academic building is operated from 10 am to 11 pm.
- There is also a food van available that delivers food directly to the hostel.
- The mess service at IIIT Guwahati is just fine. It serves three-time meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
- There is also a tea facility for an extra charge. It is not included in the mess charge and has to be paid separately.
- The breakfast and lunch served are usually vegetarian. At the dinner, the students are given an option to choose between a vegetarian special item and a non-vegetarian special item.
- The taste is good and the food is of satisfactory level. The non-vegetarian food served is really good.
Both the mess and canteen are not high profile but are satisfactory. Now, tenders are offered, thus making a competition between caterers which is a positive sign for improvement and better service.
Should I join ECE in NIT Durgapur or CSE in IIIT Guwahati, given that I am interested in coding and that IIIT is only about 5 years old?
If coding is your area of interest and you are getting a chance to join ECE at NIT Durgapur then grab it.
- The coding culture at NIT Durgapur is amazing. You will grow a lot here.
- The ECE department has produced many GSoCers and also fantastic competitive coders.
- The department does not pressurize the students much and you can peacefully do your work.
- If you maintain a good CGPA, you can even get a summer internship at ‘CERN’.
- The institute has put in a lot of effort to build a good research culture. The department also receives sponsorship for research. In the past, it has done research sponsored by research initiation grant, DST, and SERB.
If you are devoted to coding, NITD ECE will offer you many opportunities.
Why are placements at IIIT Bhubaneswar so pathetic as compared to IIIT Guwahati?
There are several reasons why the placements of IIIT Bhubaneswar do not hike to the level of IIIT Guwahati. One of my friends is among the recent alumni of the institute and has a better idea about the same. Here is what he has to say.
- While IIIT Guwahati is an institute of National Importance, IIIT Bhubaneswar is not.
- IIIT Guwahati usually also has the provision of industry support from various major companies because of the status of national importance it has. It also comes under MHRD, GOI directly. IIIT Bhubaneswar doesn’t enjoy the same privilege.
- IIIT Guwahati receives funds and support directly from the central government, unlike IIIT Bhubaneswar.
- IIIT Guwahati was first established by MHRD and was among the few newer IIITs to have their permanent campus quite early.
- The peer group at IIIT Guwahati is better due to the higher cut-off as compared to IIIT Bhubaneswar.
These are the reasons behind the poor placement record of IIIT Bhubaneswar.
How is IIIT Guwahati CSE compared to IIIT Jabalpur, Allahabad, Gwalior, and Kancheepuram?
Having to know people studying in these institutes and after doing some research myself, I got to know about some things which might help you get a proper insight, Here are some of the following:
- IIIT Jabalpur, Allahabad, Gwalior, and Kancheepuram are all MHRD funded and they are quite old in comparison with IIIT Guwahati.
- IIIT Jabalpur has the best rankings among all of the IIITs.
- IIITM Gwalior is the oldest institution among all.
- IIIT Allahabad has the best placements among all.

Based on all the facts regarding rankings, placements, infrastructure, and location, it can be concluded that IIIT Allahabad stands in the first position while IIIT Gwalior is at last.
From which university will IIIT Guwahati students get a degree from?
IIIT Guwahati is an institute of national importance. As per the Indian Institute of Information Technology Public-Private Partnership Act 2017 by the Govt. of India it is authorized to award its own degree. The same goes for all the other 14 IIITs that were set up on a PPP basis between 2013-2016.
All 15 of these institutes are regarded as institutes of national importance and can give their own degrees. As these are autonomous statuary institutes and are not within the purview of UGC or AICTE. The degrees awarded by these IIITs, including IIIT Guwahati has a similar status to that of IIT and NIT.

Who is the best teacher in IIIT Guwahati?
All the teachers in IIIT Guwahati are very good and are specialized in their own field of expertise. Being a student here, my brother says that every teacher here has their own teaching methodology. Some of the teachers have amazing communication skills while some do not but if you are determined to learn, it becomes easier and interesting.
- In the CSE Department, GB Sir is considered to be one of the best according to most of the students. He has experience and expertise in his field. He finds what the students need and he is very good at his work.
- Another teacher, DSB sir is very supportive and encouraging with the students. He involves himself with the students in class.
- Ferdous Sir inspires students and tries to help out most of the students although being very busy.
- Matam sir has great expertise in Computer Networks. He is very fluent, the students are very attentive in his class.
- Moumita Ma’am has her own teaching methods. She has a systematic approach to learning which ensures that the students learn that subject.
There are other teachers too who are open to the ideas of students and are encouraging as well as approachable. The CSE department is very fortunate in terms of strong faculty.
