How is Thapar University?

AM
Agnish Mukherjee Posted On : August 8th, 2023
BE from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology

Thapar University was established in 1956. When it was a young institution, it ranked among the top 20 universities/colleges in India, and its students achieved great heights. Even today, many students from this University do immensely well and bring honor to it.

This institution has a long-standing reputation and its alumni work in top MNCs as well as are part of the Indian Civil Services. Some of the top companies where its alumni are presently working include- Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, Twitter, Cisco, Uber, VMWare etc.

Even though Thapar University is still a brand name, newly opened institutions like DAIICT, BITS Goa, BITS Hyd, etc. are outperforming it significantly. The university has seen a significant decline in its glorious days in the past. This is because since 2008, due to its owner’s financial constraints, the crowd quality has declined and things have become more money-driven. There are few hikes every year. Unlike before, there are around 1300-1500 students on campus in the present times.

Thus, Thapar University has fallen down from its days of glory and significant steps need to be taken to revive its lost glory.

How does the CV of students who get selected in IIMs(any), ISB, XLRI, FMS, SPJIMER, JBIMS look like?

RG
Ritwik Ganguly Posted On : February 23rd, 2022
studied at Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (2019)

Naturally, it’s not possible to talk about CVs of all students who get selected at these B-schools. CVs of around the top 15-20% of students selected at IIMs, XLRI, FMS, or other popular management institutes are exceptional. But CV of an average student at these institutes usually has the following attributes.

Academics and Co-curricular activities:

Every student getting admission at these institutes doesn’t have international level or national level olympiads or other achievements. An average student usually has a few subject scores to boast about, a few competitive examination scores, some co-curricular activities, and a few certifications.

Work experience and Internships:

Most students have one or two job experiences. For this section, proper presentation helps a lot. If you present your job experience properly, your CV will look impressive.

Position of responsibilities:

Every student getting into IIM and other top management institutes doesn’t have exceptional PORs. Most student talks about their role in college fests and the responsibilities attached to it, NGO work, or a captain or vice-captain role in sports teams.

Extracurricular Activities:

Around 70% of students getting admission at these institutes have few social service initiatives, school/college level sports achievements, school/college level cultural achievements.

One of my friends recently graduated from SPJIMR, and his CV was average.

  • Academics: 10th - 92.4%, 12th - 82.6%, Graduation - 77.09%
  • He had nothing mentionable for Extra Curriculars and Positions of Responsibilities.

The two things that helped him get selected are his CAT score, i.e. 99.38 percentile, and work experience at a Top 20 Fortune 500 Automobile Firm.

This is the case for most students getting admission to these institutes. Only one or two sections of their CV stand out and the rest is fairly average.

Why has BIT Mesra gone down so drastically? Will it ever come back to normal?

AM
Ashish Mishra Posted On : August 9th, 2023
BE from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (2017)

There are various reasons combined together that have resulted in deteriorating education opportunities and quality at BIT Mesra. Despite the huge amount of funds ranging into hundreds of crores, the institute has been receiving, there is no improvement in the situation at all.  Here are a few reasons why BIT Mesra has suffered a deteriorating situation over the past few years

  • C.K. Birla Group is financially highly unstable and thus adds to the insecurity of the institute as a whole.
  • The government of Jharkhand has bad ties with BIT because the CM of Jharkhand was kicked out of BIT without a degree.
  • The faculty is worse than VIT, Manipal, RVCE, etc. The poor quality of facilities is the major reason for its drastic downfall. Most of the professors are underqualified or not interested in teaching.
  • The college promotes zero research culture and this has resulted in a gradual downfall.
  • There is a huge communication gap between the administration and students. Students should be given positions in administration and the administration should work on improving the facilities such as the incubation center for the betterment of the institute.
  • The T n P Cell is also responsible for the fall in the placements. They have minimal connections with alumni and fail to attract better companies.
  • The institute lacks International Collaborations for undergraduate internships and research.

The students should work hard to bring about the above changes if they want to save their college from falling into the pit.

Which is better: VIT or IIT Gandhinagar?

DB
Disha Banerjee Posted On : August 20th, 2022
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering & Humanities, Education, Finance, Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology

IIT Gandhinagar is definitely the better choice among these. Being an IIT, the facilities offered by the institute are great. It offers decent academics. IIT Gandhinagar has made excellent progress in a very short span of time. It has witnessed good placements over the years. IIT Gandhinagar placements 2021 concluded with an average CTC of INR 8.96 LPA. HPCL, ISRO, Goldman Sachs, etc. are the top recruiters that took part in the placement drive.

What is the worst thing to be in IIM Ahmedabad?

PG
Piyush Garg Posted On : February 22nd, 2022
MBA PGPX, IIM Ahmedabad, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (2018)

If you are joining IIM Ahmedabad, here are some things that you may find difficult to deal with.

  • The environment on campus is quite competitive. You will start to realize the academic workload from the first week itself.
  • You will be on your own. If you can’t grasp the coursework, you will get help from your seniors and peers but it’s only up to a point.
  • In your first year, there is not much freedom. You will have compulsory sessions, placement sessions, etc. But this teaches you to operate within constraints.

Life becomes easier once you settle in.

How is the CUSAT ranking, cutoff, and placement for a B.Tech 4 year?

Aparna Das Posted On : February 23rd, 2024

CUSAT is ranked 63rd in the overall college rankings of NIRF for 2023. It has two colleges for B.Tech. One of them is SOE i.e. School of Engineering in Kochi City, and the other is CUCEK i.e. Cochin University College of Engineering in Pulinkunnu. It is a village roughly 100 km away from SOE.

The cutoff varies from year to year. My brother’s rank was 3129. He got Civil in SOE, a few years back. For CS/IT, you’ll need at least a rank >1000. The placements are decent for CS/IT and Safety & Fire graduates.

The average package for these streams is 3 LPA, and the highest package is around 20 LPA. Amazon sometimes visits the campus to make recruitments. The placements are in a poor condition for other branches. Moreover, the CUCEK campus lacks lab facilities for Civil and Mechanical.

Overall, CUSAT is a decent choice for B.Tech, but it lags behind in terms of placements and facilities for non CS/IT branches.

I completed my BBA two years back and now I have 2 years of work experience. I did a distant PGDM from NMIMS. If I clear the CAT this year, should I go for a regular MBA?

VR
Varsha Roy Posted On : June 27th, 2021
Studied at IIM A (2018)

Since you already have a work experience of 2 years you should go for an executive program from a reputed institute rather than doing any regular program.

  • You should never hold your career because of continuing with a regular MBA program rather than you should choose an executive program.
  • For the executive program, you can choose a 1-year global MBA degree in collaboration with 3 B schools.
  • They are Cardiff School of Management, UK, IIM-Indore, and Universal Business School, Mumbai.
  • In this program, you will be able to learn from these big institutions, especially IIM’s.
  • You will also be getting good global exposure.
  • The curriculum of the college will be the British curriculum and all these programs will develop your skills and will help you in your career development.

The executive program of IBS Hyderabad is also very good. There are several other institutes offering executive MBA programs where you can research and choose the best option.

How is the NMIMS distance learning program in MBA?

Namrata Das Posted On : July 22nd, 2022

NMIMS Global MBA program is better than other distance MBA programs available. The course is designed as per the requirements of working professionals. Students get the required support from the university and the centers.

They have student portals and Whatsapp groups to keep students updated regarding course-related information. The year-wise examination is taken in an online mode at students’ convenience.
