How are the placements at IIT Madras for civil engineering?

AS
Anamika Sinha Posted On : March 30th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

IIT Madras is ranked among the top 50 colleges in the world for civil and structural engineering courses. It is the only institution where the average salary of the CE branch is better than the average across all branches. This could be because one student of IIT Madras was placed at a salary of INR 52.50 lakh – the highest salary for any Civil Engineering student.

Placements for all the branches at IITs in general and IIT madras, in particular, are the same except for CS and EE. This is because most students of branches other than these two end up taking non-core jobs like finance, analytics, software, consulting, and management because they offer a better package than core jobs. On the other hand, CS and EE students get excellent offers from many software companies thereby offering better roles.

The average salary of CS, EE, and other branches at IIT Madras is given below

Branch

Average Salary

CSE

INR 41.72 LPA

ECE

INR 24.4 LPA

Other Branches

INR 33.06 LPA

Which has the better faculty in civil engineering, IIT Guwahati or IIT BHU?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : June 30th, 2023

IIT Guwahati has better faculty than IIT BHU in the civil engineering department. IIT BHU has poor faculty; the professors lack the ability to communicate the concepts clearly to the students, and they do not have sufficient knowledge of the core subject, especially in the civil engineering department. They have been trying to give better classes to the students in recent years. But if you get the choice to select any of these two institutions in civil engineering, you can surely opt for IIT Guwahati.

Which has the better faculty in civil engineering, IIT Guwahati or IIT BHU?

Honestly speaking, this internet-controlled era hardly requires good teachers as everything is available on the net. You can get in touch with internationally proclaimed professors with just a click. As far as IIT faculty is concerned, all IITs have similar degree holders that are quality knowledgeable.

A good teacher is the one that hones your talents to the fullest. They not only help you acquire knowledge but also shape your thinking style. Every institute has a few teachers that influence a student in a unique way. I am sure both IIT Guwahati and IIT BHU will have similar teachers.

Ultimately, what matters is the environment and the activities that these colleges will provide us to expand our intellect and maximize our talents. Pay little focus on the faculty and look for the right field to enter that will help you shape your career. Personally, I would suggest you go for IIT Guwahati as it has more open-minded and active people in that area which will give you considerable freedom to think and perform.

How is civil engineering at IIT Patna?

PB
Pranjal Bhargava Posted On : June 21st, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Patna

The Civil Engineering department of IIT Patna is well-regarded. Here are a few pros and cons to ensure a better understanding of the branch.

Pros

  • The student-teacher ratio is ideal and ensures individual attention to every student
  • The faculty is young and zealous in contrast to old professors in the other IITs. They are cooperative and approachable thus making matters easier
  • The institute has been established recently so the infrastructure and facilities are new and plentiful. Every student gets the opportunity to actually perform the experiment and handle the instruments.
  • The small batch size means lesser competition and better grades.
  • The city of Bihar has many opportunities in the form of innumerable projects like Bihar Govt., College Construction work, etc that seek approval from the department. This ensures maximum practical exposure and fieldwork.
  • The course structure is flexible, modern, and updated as per industry needs. The old courses have been denounced and new courses in versatile domains have been added to ensure a hybrid course structure.

Cons

  • The small batch size results in lesser competition and thus limits the growth of the students.
  • The research culture especially in the UG programs is pathetic.

Make the final decision based on your personal preferences and after weighing the above points.

How is placement for civil engineering in bangalore Institute of Technology?

IB
Indira Biswas Posted On : January 8th, 2021
B.Tech Civil Engineering, IIT Kharagpur (2019)

When compared to other colleges in Karnataka, BIT placements are much better. One of my friends completed his BE in Civil Engineering (2016) and got placed in Brigade.

Placements:

  • The institute witnessed 50% placements in 2019 and received companies like Larsen and Toubro, Gammon, Wipro, and Accenture. A couple of construction companies visit for the placement process as well.
  • Around 15-20 students get placed with core companies. Other branches do have a much better placement rate. For instance, it was 100% for CSE, ISE, and ECE branches.
  • However, Civil Engineering has more scope off-campus. Govt. sectors offer the highest number of jobs to Civil Engineering students.
  • Civil engineering students may have to start with a lower CTC than other branches but there are no saturation points.

The placement statistics for Civil Engineering in recent years at BIT are as follows.

Average CTC

6.5 LPA

Median CTC

4 LPA

The trend is in the favour of Civil Engineers and there's a huge demand for CE in the industry, which was not so a decade ago. So, if you are genuinely interested in Civil then you should go for it.

For female Civil Engineering graduates, is it worth studying in NICMAR?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : May 18th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

The placement record of NICMAR is not 100%, but still impressive at 85%. However, the number of companies visiting the campus has reduced after Demonetization, which is a concern for a candidate’s placement prospects. Having work experience is an advantage, but it is not a deal-breaker as some freshers with ordinary CGPA have also secured good placements.

The decision to study at NICMAR should depend on one's confidence in their skills, as it is considered the best techno-management college in the country, with updated courseware that meets industry demands. The campus life is also vibrant, with many activities and clubs.

There is no bias towards female students at NICMAR, and they comprise about 25-30% of the total strength.

Should I opt for Civil Engineering in IIEST Shibpur or Production Engineering at Jadavpur University?

AM
Ahana Malhotra Posted On : September 17th, 2020
Studies at Jadavpur University (2024)

First of all, it is important to note that Civil Engineering and Production Engineering are not the same things. Students looking to pursue courses in any of these fields are required to do thorough research before choosing and applying to a university.

Ranking:

  • IIEST Shibpur and Jadavpur University are both excellent colleges for education. Jadavpur University is one of the top graded A-tier universities in India however, IIEST holds more brand value because of its recent popularity and placements.
  • Jadavpur University has been ranked at 12 out of 200 universities in India by NIRF ranking and the 2nd best university in Kolkata. IIEST Shibpur has been ranked at 43rd place in the same ranking.

Departments:

  • The Civil engineering department is one of the oldest departments at IIEST university and has one of the highest numbers of placements. The production engineering department at JU is relatively new but it has the benefit of having experienced and up to date professors.

Admission Cut-off:

Both universities accept JEE scores for admission. IIEST Shibpur B.Tech in Civil Engineering requires a rank around 2506-27001 whereas JU B.tech in production engineering requires a rank of 315-420.

Placements:

  • The placements offered at Jadavpur University are better for the reason that it has a better nationwide ranking and engages in campus recruitment programs. It had recently achieved a record of 84% placements in May 2020.
  • IIEST civil engineering program had 78 students out of which 42 got placed in 2020.It recorded a 57.14% placement percentage.

Thus, it all depends on the student and their JEE ranking if they want to take admission in IIEST Shibpur or Jadavpur University. Again, it also depends on the interest whether they want to pursue Civil Engineering or go towards the production engineering line.

For civil engineering, what should be my preference order, NIT Agartala, NIT Jamshedpur, or BIT Mesra?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : August 17th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

All the three colleges are good. However, according to me, NIT JSR and BIT Mesra are better than NIT Agartala. For a core Engineering branch though, NIT JSR is a better choice over BIT Mesra. So your preference order for Civil should be NIT JSR> BIT Mesra> NIT Agartala.

Here are a few comparison points between NIT JSR and BIT Mesra to helTithi agp you choose between the two-

  1. Academic Infrastructure- The infrastructure at BIT Mesra is better than NIT JSR. However, NIT JSR has a new academic building and the old academic building underwent renovation some time back.
  2. Hostel Infrastructure- The hostel infrastructure of NIT JSR is much superior with the rooms and galleries in very good condition.
  3. Placements- For core branches, the placements are a bit better at NIT JSR.
  4. The teacher-student ratio is better at BIT Mesra.
  5. BIT Mesra is a private college, so the maintenance of campus, classrooms, etc. is much better. However, its semester fees are much higher than NIT JSR.
  6. NIT JSR carries the ‘NIT’ tag which holds value if you go for your higher studies, and may also open more job opportunities for you.
  7. For CAT, UPSC, IES, GATE, etc. aspirants, NIT JSR has a lesser attendance pressure and allows more free time that you can then use for your preparation.
  8. Curriculum load- The curriculum load is more at BIT Mesra than NIT JSR.
  9. The girls:boys student ratio is better at BIT Mesra.
  10. The study environment is almost the same at both.

BIT Mesra is a better option for CSE. However, for a core branch, NIT JSR is a better choice. My brother chose Civil at NIT JSR over Civil at BIT Mesra and he did not regret his decision. Also, never choose an institution based off of NIRF rankings because they consider many factors, and many of them are irrelevant for you.
