‘College’ is a misnomer for IIIT Allahabad as it was declared an ‘institute of national importance’. Here is how you can differentiate between a college, university, and an institute.

  • A college is an academic organization that is affiliated with a degree-granting university (public or private) and has no autonomy.
  • A university is more autonomous in terms of its academic programs, program granting, examination evaluation, etc. However, universities still need to follow the regulation of statutory bodies like UGC, AICTE, etc.
  • An institute of national importance is set up by the Act of Parliament and thus is equivalent with statutory bodies. Such institutes are completely funded by the Central Govt. and enjoy complete autonomy.

IIIT A belongs to the third category. The institute is capable of conceiving, designing, and starting new programs like B.Tech and many others.
